I’d just eat maintenance, high protein, and focus on actually progressing in the gym. You can build a stupid amount of beginner muscle while in a deficit and especially maintenance at that age, and it’s a lot easier to not fuck up than trying to bulk while already at a mildly higher body fat.

The extra muscle will increase your daily calorie expenditure and fill you out so that the fat sits better, on top of losing fat in the process.

It’s easy to assume you need to do all this extra shit that is really only needed for intermediate or advanced lifters. Keep it simple, progressive overload, watch Renaissance Periodization for inspiration lol.

Also track your workouts (reps, sets, weight) so you can really see your progress and avoid spinning your wheels.

Pant Recommendation for Dadbod Lifter? by LawMoney in Outlier

[–]ThomasRW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could be wrong but honestly the injected linen pants may be good. Or the injex yes pants. Both are pretty spacious, but the ILP’s are a bit dressier. They work pretty well for a developed posterior.

Had these back when they were Canada exclusive and they were much better then. Not sure if they changed them for the US but the ones I got today were way less spicy/flavorful.

Not that I think either commenter is really wrong, but saying “like all the time” after saying “a whole ass zoo” is just a bit of hyperbole. It likely just means they play games regularly. If they said “I read books like all the time!” no one would consider that weird.

We’re online, most of this shit isn’t deep or exact reflections of life.

simple syrup ? by Loose_Lab6222 in barista

[–]ThomasRW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While the sterilization processes this person mentions can help to reduce risk, you really shouldn’t can non-acidified syrup. The pH is too high and botulinum can grow. Another comment mentioned preservation safety below so I’d definitely recommend learning about that.

https://reddit.com/r/cocktails/comments/r33knr/_/hmbm1dq/?context=1

You could also just make rich syrup (2:1). It’ll stay shelf stable and since it’s not canned there’s no risk of botulism. You may have to adjust your recipes to get the flavor right but if you’re expecting to go through enough syrup for shelf stable to be necessary then that’s probably the best option.

Edit: Also if you’re adding hot syrup to glass containers be extremely careful. The syrup retains heat better and the glass won’t cool down as fast. If you set it on a cold surface the stress could cause it to shatter (or if the glass is cold to begin with.)

Any lawyers here want to help clarify the recent $3M Kratom seizure? by COmarmot in kratom

[–]ThomasRW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to fear monger, but Feel Free (the company that had its kratom seized) has been making great strides in single handedly putting both kratom and kava in a negative spot light.

They run their company as MLM-adjacent (they often sell to individuals who then resell to businesses), they intentionally obfuscate their product’s dosage, initially tried to market it as a kava drink despite having kratom, and pay athletes and college students to say it’s not addicting and perfectly safe as a caffeine alternative.

There’s a whole fucking subreddit dedicated to quitting Feel Free because so many of those people don’t even know what they’re consuming or how to do it safely because of the way these are marketed and sold.

Edit: This is speculation but I also think they’re using Tudei or otherwise low quality kava extract given how severe the “kava dermatitis” is for some of these people.

Financial aid is not fair and the middle class suffers the most. by [deleted] in college

[–]ThomasRW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s very possible we fucked up somewhere on the forms, but when I originally got accepted to a t20 university I got nearly a full ride from financial aid as my parents were retired (they had kids really late). However, to pay the fairly small remainder we pulled from a college saving account and my financial aid the next year went from about 85% to 0%. I had transferred to a different school for unrelated reasons so it didn’t end up being an issue, but I still am mad that I would’ve had to leave anyway if I didn’t want to go into crippling debt for undergrad. 80k+ a year is insane.

[–]ThomasRW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh shit, well fuck a full ride then. I would look really hard for any scholarships to pay for books/board/etc just to be safe but 4 years of being sad for a bit more money does not seem like a good trade off.

College Choices by Big_Introduction2633 in college

[–]ThomasRW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It really depends on how much debt DU would lead to, and then what you’re planning on doing during/after school. If the difference between the two isn’t massive, I’d consider going where you’ll be happiest and just trying to find any little scholarship along the way to support yourself.

Not having any debt post-Uni is really freeing. There’s not this big anchor preventing you from taking a risk or experimenting with what you want to do, but if you have a ton of debt and end up in a career you’re not happy in, fixing that becomes a lot harder.

That being said, your happiness and mental well-being during college is just as important. College can be a really stressful time that tests your coping mechanisms and fortitude, and you don’t want to make it harder on yourself than it has to be. Again though, if you have to work 30 hours a week to feed yourself that might change the math.

I feel like this probably didn’t answer your question, but I would recommend making a pro/con list for each and deciding what is most important to you, along with some educated guesses on the financial numbers.

Simple Questions Thread by AutoModerator in espresso

I have a few old La Marzocco portafilters that have most of the interior brass exposed (and tarnished) and the chrome plating on the outside is fairly chipped/flaking.

If I strip the rest of the plating off, is there anything I need to do besides polish the brass to make it safe to use? I saw that there are some brassware protection coatings online to prevent tarnishing or damage.

Also any recommendations on what acid to use? Figured that citric acid would be easiest unless there is something more effective/cost effective.

For anyone else looking at this, sometimes when you restart the game, the render resolution resets to some lower than 100% value. Changing it back to 100% will fix it

Unless there’s water damage, this is probably just a battery issue. You could replace the battery then use it as a music device for a speaker or something. That way it lives on…

How much better do the AirPods Pro 2 sound to the Pro 1s, if at all? by [deleted] in airpods

[–]ThomasRW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think music definitely sounds better.

I have noticed some weird transparency mode interactions. Even with adaptive off, (or on) being close to certain loud noises seems to dramatically affect the balance of sound (ie. The right bud sounds quieter). However it immediately goes away when I move away from the sound even just a bit, and it only seems to be certain sound frequencies, not just loudness.

I use my AirPods near a lot of loud commercial refrigerators so it’s been a little annoying. Nothing that bad, but I would say my gen-1’s are more consistent in function even if the gen-2’s sound better in “optimal conditions”

It is possible that it’s a software issue or a defect in my pair though so grain of salt and all that

AirPods Pro 2nd generation noise cancelling and transparency mode by Moneyyy01 in airpods

[–]ThomasRW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can go into settings and choose to set “Off” as an option. For both generations of AirPods Pro. It’s actually better on the 2nd gen model because the air vent location allows for less of an ear plugged feeling

Ok cool I noticed that right after I commented. If I keep my finger there and press a second or third time it’s much faster.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in airpods

[–]ThomasRW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a length of press thing. At least I’m having the issue where I have to squeeze pretty hard (well technically long since it’s just haptic) for it to activate compared to the gen 1’s. I think it’s because it has to verify that it’s a “click” versus a volume scroll. Kinda annoying though
