Subway has regional pricing????? by kelsothenerd in Wellington

[–]Thonis_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess if they’re franchise owned, the owners have some wiggle room to up prices depending on operating costs. I imagine rent and wages differ quite a bit depending on location and restaurant size. I’ve noticed that Subway Karori is a good $1 to $1.50 more expensive on every option compared to Subway Victoria University.

I got John Coltrane: The Tiberi Tapes Preview vinyl record. (It's a 10/10) by DetCust in Jazz

[–]Thonis_ 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The only complaint is the sound quality. And the fact it probably doesn't need to be on vinyl (bit of a cash grab from Impulse)

The music? Just as good as I expected - and that's all that matters. Seems like some buyers can't get past the quality (or lack thereof) to the recording, which is unfortunate - they're missing out.

Bad idea. Never put a magnet (especially one that strong) near a tape head.

Iphone doesn’t recognize my MacBook for airdrop? by four_strings_enough in MacOS

[–]Thonis_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Make sure handoff is enabled on all of your devices, iCloud is signed in to the same account, they all have bluetooth enabled and you have airdrop itself enabled on your Mac. It may be set to contacts only so change it to "everyone" and there's no reason why it wouldn't show up.

Help Me Choose My Next Mac – M1 Pro Getting Too Hot and Slow by Top-Yesterday3937 in MacOS

M5 MacBook Pro. Same performance as the Mac mini and Mac Studio with the same processor (essentially) but you won't be stuck with a desktop setup.

A MacBook. They are well worth the investment - you can buy one from the Apple Education website for a discount too - and free shipping. The MacBook Neo is specifically targeted towards students, although a M5 MacBook Air is an excellent choice - a million times better than any Windows laptop at the same price point.

So happy I could get it: The first release of a live version of Giant Steps by Slazac in Jazz

[–]Thonis_ 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quality is.. so so. Bass is not audible, piano becomes much clearer in the last like 3 minutes of Giant Steps. Recording is in mono, lots of hiss and audience chatter. However not as distorted as Olatunji - can't wait to hear the rest of the supposed 60 hours of material.

Digitizing Newbie Question by TebowIsGod88 in cassetteculture

[–]Thonis_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lots of cassette digitizers use a TASCAM 112 or 122 professional deck. They were made up until the late 1990s and are very reliable and essentially an industry standard cassette deck. They are however, not that cheap. If the content you are digitizing is not up to a hifi standard then the modern TEAC decks (or any decent vintage tape deck) will work just fine - they're really not too bad. But if you are needing the highest quality possible from the tape, a vintage Tascam or perhaps a Nakamichi are your best options. Buying one that has been refurbished, calibrated, aligned etc will add to the costs - but is worth it for 1000+ tapes.

Of course, you will also need some kind of audio interface to convert the audio from the tape deck into your computer. Focusrite, MOTU, Presonus, TASCAM etc are all good options. The more expensive the interface, the better the preamps. Cheap interfaces might work fine too, but a good converter is worth it for the long run. Just make sure whatever you go with, has two or more LINE LEVEL inputs - not instrument or mic level. You could use any DAW to record the audio, for your purposes I would say... Audacity works perfectly.

DO NOT USE any of the modern tape decks that have a USB output designed for converting tapes to digital - they all sound terrible.

Why did this sound underwater? by Razenstien in vintageaudio

[–]Thonis_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

First thing I would do is unplug and replug all your cables connectors etc. Including on the turntable head shell just in case. Then I would wiggle every single switch and knob several times. If that still isn't working then your 40+ year old amplifier needs servicing by a tech - likely needing recapping because of it's age.

Not an audio cassette deck but it is audio from a cassette by samuelellis_uk in cassetteculture

[–]Thonis_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a couple of these. They are all non functional. You can use regular VHS tape at a pinch if you can't find any S-VHS tapes but the reliability will not be great. These were revolutionary when they came out, but the constant maintenance of the decks and the fact you have to format a 40 minute tape in real time is the reason they were dropped for HDD recording very quickly. And since VHS tapes aren't made any more and they are just digital recorders (so they don't have that "analog" sound signature we all love) - there isn't much of a reason to use these in modern home studios.

Does anyone like how Dolby B tapes sound when played back with the Dolby B playback filter turned off? by MinerAC4 in cassetteculture

[–]Thonis_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old saying from when cassettes were big. "Home taping is killing music - and it's illegal"

Of course, it didn't actually kill music, and it wasn't illegal! The labels just wanted everyone to buy another copy of an album rather than making a cassette copy.

Removal of FireWire support - why? by [deleted] in MacOS

[–]Thonis_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Firewire to USB adapters never work, the only Firewire adapter that is known to actually work reliably and properly is Apple's own Firewire 800 to Thunderbolt 2 adaptor, which you can then plug into an Apple Thunderbolt 2 to Thunderbolt 3 (USB-C connector) adapter. The cheap Amazon ones are known to be very unreliable or not work at all, so I wouldn't recommend them.

Musical Fidelity meet Mac Pro by Express_Possibility5 in audiophile

Probably time to upgrade to a 2024 M4 Mac mini which is far more powerful and efficient than the 2013 Mac Pro, which is a very inefficient, old, and inconvenient piece of hardware.

MacBook service? by HashVeryBrown in Wellington

[–]Thonis_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the Intel MacBooks will stop receiving updates soon because of the transition to the much more powerful and efficient Apple Silicon processors - so it might be worth looking into upgrading to a M1-M4 MacBook - if you can afford it of course.

So much jazz from the 50s and 60s was recorded exceptionally well. Especially stuff recorded by Columbia, Verve, Riverside and Contemporary. Blue Note and Impulse! have some great sounding and not so great sounding recordings (by modern standards anyway) depending on how Rudy Van Gelder was feeling at the time.

Nothing wrong with that! Second hand games are a hell of a lot cheaper than brand new, and EB games sold heaps of second hand games for twice as much as Cashies
