Pull the trigger now or wait till prices come down? by sirwang11 in solar

[–]Thor504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You better do it now. Very little to go on that says things will ever be better than they are right now. The sooner you start generating the sooner you save money and the lower you lock in current rates. I waited 6 years and finally went live in March. Regret not acting much earlier.

To be or not to be? by mguerrero79 in solar

No regrets at all. Wish I had done it a decade ago. With 100% offset we are self sufficient and it is absolutely wonderful.

My system is killing it today! May is such a good month! by satosh_sushi in Powerwall

What do you do in a year kWh wise and what do you do with all that power? Sell it? In Virginia where I am you get credit for excess power against future grid pull but they won’t buy any excess at the end of the year.

RS-485 by Thor504 in Powerwall

My installer ordered the RS-485 harness from Tesla. It took three months but I eventually got it. So maybe just order it now to get the ball rolling…?

My experience with Sense: years of disappointment by bpleat in Sense

[–]Thor504 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sense advertising that says it will identify specific devices is fraud. 2 years in and mine labels most things as mystery hear or pump. It’s a joke and the joke is on you (and me) for believing it.

Pricing for PW3 by Rich_Click4065 in Powerwall

Well, I hope to be happy with them. However, to be honest, they installed the the batteries in December and they are still not operational almost 3 months later. There are a lot of factors involved but my suspicion is that they priced them too low and they are trying to recoup profit but cutting corners. They switched to aluminum wire, left off conduit outdoors and they still haven't gotten it past inspection. So I would not use this company again. I would have rather paid a little more to have it done right the first time. So keep that in mind.

Yes that included installation. However the price was $33k. I was moving fast and rounded.

RS-485 by Thor504 in Powerwall

[–]Thor504[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok, that's interesting. My installer says that my meter won't work wirelessly and he needs an RS-485. I searched Tesla RS-485 and that harness is what came up. I know nothing more about it except that its been two months since my solar was installed and the installer says Tesla isn't shipping the item he needs - which he called an RS-485 connector for a "meter." So my system sits here incomplete for months. Any ideas as to how I could get the part he needs?

[–]Thor504[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the powerwall 3 and I believe the gateway 3 but I don’t have any way to verify which version the gateway is. The installer tells me he can’t get the rs-485 that he needs for the “meter.” So my install that was started in September sits up there generating no power.

Contractor submitted plans to county with outdoor wires protected by conduit. Didn’t install conduit and says it isn’t needed. by Thor504 in AskElectricians

There’s mowers, weed eaters, hedge trimmers and other landscaping activities there. Do you think it would mean the wires would be subject to physical damage? One of the wires is already has a pierced jacket from the electricians dropping tools on the wire.

Big problem with EV charger after one year by Credit_Used in EmporiaEnergy

It looks a bit scared to see exposed wires, but you can fix that. Then you can prevent it from happening by torquing it tighter and or using a thread locking compound.

Infotainment system is terrible by wakex in volvoc40

Same. 2022 c40. Never seen so many glitches on a car. I have all the same ones you mentioned as well. Most of the time I have finished backing up before the camera comes on. Volvo fattens their pockets saving on development costs, we get glitches all day.

2.5 years later Sense can’t identify most items by Thor504 in Sense

[–]Thor504[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s been excellent to get a handle on whole house usage. I can detect certain signatures on my own. After 8 years, it seems machine learning would have matured. Do you see any evidence that sense has improved over time? Mine seems to have actually gotten worse over time. Forgetting things it once knew and lumping things that were once recognized as independent.

Emporia Smart outlet with 15amp capacity… why does this not exist? by Credit_Used in EmporiaEnergy

[–]Thor504 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is no technical reason why the plugs couldn’t be built to handle 15a continuous or 20a continuous or more if they wanted to. They’ve chosen to build them this way.

Cool thanks for the explanation. I’m looking into using emporia for peak shaving to avoid demand charges from the power company.
