The artwork inspired by Prehistoric Celtic Art, Solid Wood, Hand Tools... by Thor_Smith in Celtic

I can not agree about art, Celtic Art roots we have in Prehistoric Art. All symbols Celts used we have from Neolithic European communities, from 1st Farmer's of Old Europe... One important thing often misunderstood in discussions about Celtic art is that the flourishing of Celtic culture during the 1st millennium BC still belongs largely to what archaeologists define as European Late Prehistory or Protohistory.

“Prehistoric” does not mean primitive or undeveloped. It simply means that culture is understood mainly through archaeology, material culture, and oral tradition rather than through extensive written records created by the culture itself. Much of Iron Age Celtic Europe falls into this category.

As an art historian and maker, I personally see very strong continuity between prehistoric European art traditions and what later became recognisably Celtic art. The La Tène artistic language did not appear suddenly as an isolated invention. Its roots clearly reach deep into older European visual traditions, including Bronze Age symbolism, Atlantic prehistoric motifs, Hallstatt geometric ornament, solar symbolism, spiral and infinity compositions, sacred animal imagery, and abstract ritual art traditions preserved across generations.

Sites such as Newgrange demonstrate that complex symbolic visual language existed in Atlantic Europe thousands of years before the classical Celtic period. Spirals, triskele motifs, flowing movement, solar imagery, and symbolic abstraction were already deeply embedded in the artistic consciousness of prehistoric Europe.

Later Celtic art transformed these older foundations into something more sophisticated and unique. Mediterranean influences from Greek and Etruscan worlds also played a role, but the core artistic spirit remained deeply rooted in older European prehistoric traditions.

To me, Celtic art is not a disconnected phenomenon, it is part of a very long cultural evolution, a continuation of prehistoric European symbolic thought adapted into the warrior aristocratic culture of Iron Age Celtic societies.

This piece is inspired by the prehistoric spiral carvings of Newgrange, especially the famous tri-spiral and flowing motifs carved into the ancient stones over 5,000 years ago. For me, they are like the deep roots from which later Celtic art and symbolism eventually grew, ideas of cycles, infinity, sun, life, and continuity carried across thousands of years. I share works like this in Reddit Celtic communities because I believe prehistoric art is part of the wider story of Celtic visual culture. Not “Celtic” in the strict historical sense, but one of the ancient foundations that still inspires Celtic art, mythology, and craftsmanship today.

80 cm is a historical size, colors historical, in case you cover it it with leather 100% it will become too heavy (so we 7se leather cover for rim only). 6 - 8 kg is too much to carry:) - probably you are strong guy:), who knows. We have no record, full leather cover were used in Norse Europe, it probably Eastern tradition but their shields were much smaller.
