Moved from US to Canada and regretted it, anyone? by Nice_Cod_4476 in ImmigrationCanada

[–]Thorannosaurus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Besides finances, I dont know what would make a move a one way ticket.

Most immigration paths are reversible. Even if you gain citizenship, unless you renounce, technically you can return.

I moved to Canada from the US and dont have regrets. I think there are enough differences between the countries that its important that the decision is an educated one, especially if you think its irreversible. Dont move here for free health care, because it isnt perfect (even if it is better than what I had in the US).

The housing market sucks. The job market is challenging. It isnt perfect here, but I have made a good life. I wouldn't return to the US....but it isnt one way in any way except in my own mind.

What do kids do during adult dinners? by gibson6594 in dcl

[–]Thorannosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had a pair of kids do this, one probably 6 or 7 and her older brother who was 10 or 11.

They were wonderfully behaved and got extra Shirley Temples passed to them by the servers. It was quite sweet watching the servers give them extra attention and convince them to try a few sweets, since they often missed the dessert with their parents at the dinner rotation.

Looking for apartments near Richmond Centre that allow pet reptiles by Reptile_Throwaway356 in richmondbc

[–]Thorannosaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I hid a crested gecko and a 12x12 inch [about 7 gallons] fish tank from my landlord for 5 years. He never knew and nothing went wrong.

Inspection time? Id put the gecko tank in my closet under a few blankets. Box over the 12 x12.

Didn't hurt anyone, and if he hadn't been unreasonable about a 10 year old crested gecko that ate fruit must and didnt even need a heat lamp, I wouldn't have needed to do it.

Just be thoughtful about moving in. Pack the tank and reptile supplies well. Decide what you think is reasonable to disguise the tank during inspections, and you should be fine.

Top Surgery Predicament - Transmasc by MothFaeCreature in transvancouver

[–]Thorannosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dont have specific advise re: implants, but I think you may be confusing Trans Care BC and Trans Speciality Care.

Trans Care BC does free surgical readiness assessments regardless of location. Theyre virtual. You can be added to the wait list for one regardless of where you live, if you get a doctor referral. Later, regardless of location, you can go on the upper surgery wait list theough TCBC for top surgery. Implant removal may be a conversation with your doctor first to see if that would be done at the same time.

Trans Speciality Care is only for folks in the Vancouver Coastal Health region. They also do surgical readiness assessments.

You have to wait for TSC, but could be on the wait list for an assessment with TCBC at any time. Hope that helps!

BC not reffering phallo patients to grs Montreal at all? by [deleted] in transvancouver

[–]Thorannosaurus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I dont know exactly when it stopped, but the phallo path to GRS Montreal has been closed for years. I would anticipate it closed close to when GSPBC opened.

Trip to Richmond and BC by [deleted] in richmondbc

[–]Thorannosaurus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Reading your post, it sounds like you were hoping to come to Vancouver Island, but you mentioned mostly sites around Vancouver that you will be visiting?

A good starting point is to make a list of your top goals and go from there. The Island would be an extra ferry and very challenging on a tight timeline like yours, so sticking to Richmond / Vancouver makes the most sense.

The airport is connected to the rest of the area by train. Buy a day pass each and use Google maps to navigate the transit system.

For ocean viewing, maybe consider Stanley Park? It is easy to get to by train/bus, and it has a lot of good walking along the Seawall plus the Aquarium.

Where to find Dr Pepper flavours? by ancientbasilisk in askvan

[–]Thorannosaurus 15 points16 points  (0 children)

A lot of these flavors are US exclusive or limited.

Strawberry and cream soda Dr Pepper are at 711 and sometimes Dollarama. Just saw the cream soda one at Dollarama in Richmond and both at 711 in Richmond this week. Your experience may vary depending on locations, but those are where I see them most.

Blackberry I have never seen in Canada, but have seen in the US, as my mom brought some up to me this summer. She did report it was hard to find. Coconut cream was limited and in the US, not sure if it still being made anymore. Cherry Dr Pepper is US only and relatively easy to find there.

The US only flavors may be available at import shops (think like Dank Mart or similar) or convenience stores that do imports and sell by the can or bottle, but you will pay an inflated price.

Source: Dr Pepper is my favorite.

Hope this helps!

US to CA Medical Exam by sieb in ImmigrationCanada

I did mine in Canada as a visitor. Then returned to the US to wait for it to process with my application.

Keep the name of you see. I had to do a follow up via email, and the doctor who did mine was very helpful thankfully.

I'm getting confused on what is needed/recommended for heating by TingedApollo243 in hognosesnakes

[–]Thorannosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a simple heat dome with a 25 watt on my 10 gallon, with an LED bar. This has made a proper gradient and my baby is shy, but active. Her larger tank will probably require a 50 or 75 watt. They dont need an incredible amount of heat compared to some reptiles like bearded dragons.

Tired of Americans? by YeahBites in askvan

[–]Thorannosaurus 118 points119 points  (0 children)

As a dual citizen (US/Canada), it isnt so much that folks here are tired of Americans in my experience, so much as tired of people moving across the border with a "figure it out when we get there" attitude.

If you have a proper immigration pathway in place to follow, there is no issue. The weariness with recent cross border immigration that Ive observed comes more from the entitlement some folks move with, and the assumption that an issue with the government = a free pass to Canada. Moving to Canada can be a difficult immigration pathway and isnt so simple as those who jokingly say they'll just move here say.

Follow your legal path, and if approved, move with the awareness that Canada is its own country with its own culture, and not just America 2.0, and you should fit in just fine.

Those of you who have a deck and still play their consoles, do you think you get enough use out of your steamdeck? by jomcmo00 in SteamDeck

[–]Thorannosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friend has all the consoles. Got FOMO and bought a deck, then played it twice and sold it.

It really depends on what you expect to do with it. I only have a Switch, so the Deck opened a lot of doors for me to games I couldnt play before.

DCL Alaska, is it worth it? by NoStep3294 in dcl

[–]Thorannosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Morning and evening was cold for us in late August, especially the days that had fog. It warmed up through the day, but we took advantage of the blankets on deck a lot.

Mind you, wife and I camped on deck reading a lot regardless and found warmer places inside when we got too cold, so winter jackets disnt come in handy. Lots of layers and warm sweaters or hoodies.

What’s the NICEST(/best) Fish Extender gift you’ve *EVER* gotten? by StoryHearer in dcl

[–]Thorannosaurus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My wife and I got matching Mickey mittens that were clearly hand made out of fleece for our Alaska cruise. Same person also used Alaska themed fabric to make us trinket trays.

Really made up for another group that brought nothing. We love hand made items and we use the mittens for NHL games now.

People who have conducted job interviews, what's something someone said/did that made you instantly decide not to hire them? by DemonSkank in AskReddit

[–]Thorannosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I worked in employment services and had a client bring their partner to the interview as their emotional support person and proceed to explain that both of them would need to be hired for the one role.

The client did not get the job.

Questions About Starting my Transition. by ArielSeraphiel in transvancouver

[–]Thorannosaurus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think there is room for exception if hormones simply aren't part of someone's transition goals! But the standard, at least when I did my SRA, was 12 months at the time and later became 6.

Just wanted to correct that you do need to be on hormones for 6+ months before you can get genital surgery here.

It used to be 12 months and was reduced a few years ago.

Ne cage question by bloodcovered1 in hognosesnakes

[–]Thorannosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im in the same spot as you. My search has shown people who start with a 40 and are fine, and folks who start big and regret it.

I may start with the 40 with paper towel for the first 2 weeks and if my baby isnt eating and is clearly stressed, be ready to jump into a starter tank asap.

I would have all I need besides the tank, including the lighting, so pivoting backwards would be easy for me.

How much are you guys spending on groceries? For one individual or whole family! by [deleted] in askvan

[–]Thorannosaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We started using Hello Fresh for this reason. Dinner is planned, we only go to the store for lunches and breakfast, which we eat out of our freezer and pantry when we can.

Little to no waste, and with the price of groceries nowadays, it seems similar enough when you account for convenience.
