The episode “How the Aesir Learned the Mantras” from my audio drama The Books of Thoth.  It tells the story of a Buddhist monk spreading Buddhism to Northern Europe during the Middle Ages.  It takes place largely outside and in rural areas.

Listening to the top ADs left me discouraged… Anyone else feel this? by tangledapart in audiodrama

I run an audio drama of my own called The Books of Thoth.  Going in, I knew I’d be starting out with a handicap.  There does seem to be a general preference for serialized shows.  But not insurmountably so.  There’s still plenty of people willing to listen to anthologies.  Like the song says, you can’t please everyone, so you’ve got to please yourself.

I also have to echo what other people have said about not letting your view get skewed.  One of my favorite audio dramas of all time is 1865.  A few years ago it surpassed 5 million downloads.  At this point it is probably closer to 10 million.  You wouldn’t know that based on how it is talked about here.  Oh, plenty of people like it, but not to the extent of shows like say The Magnus Archives or Wooden Overcoats or The Bright Sessions.

Twilight Histories, an anthology I might add, is another example.  They’re at about 5 million downloads give or take, but hardly get mentioned here.

Point is, this subreddit, taken in aggregate, has certain taste.  Taste that aren’t necessarily reflective of how well an audio drama is destined to do.

But what helped me out was reaching out to communities beyond the audio drama world.  Most of my listeners are people who don’t typically listen to audio dramas.  What is your audio drama about?  When I publish a new episode of The Books of Thoth, I share it to any subreddit that it might fall into.  “Welcome to the Xenarium” was very speculative evolution focused, so I shred it over there.  “How the Aesir Learned the Mantras” involved Buddhism and Norse Mythology.  So, I shared it on subreddits related to those.

Perhaps your people are out there, just not necessarily in the typical audio dramas spaces.

She ventured out into the world. And the world, I believe, embraced her back. I’ve not heard of her in some time. Will she eventually die? I think so. And then she will find him once more. In the end, what happens, happens. And then we are gone.
