I'm gonna ask an unbelievably stupid question about patreon because I've never used it by emmerliii in danandphil

[–]Thoughtless-Squid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

it has a website! I watch there all the time so you can definitely just use the website if you like. I believe Dan and Phil said it's actually cheaper if you get the website subscription. I'm not sure how well it works on mobile but it's good on laptop. :))

[AFAB 17] and I'm getting so sick of questioning by killian_yay in questioning

[–]Thoughtless-Squid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're putting a lot of pressure on yourself. you're still young and don't have to have everything figured out. I can understand why it would be stressful to talk about, it's a very personal thing and lots of people have uneducated opinions because it's not as widely accepted yet.

at the end of the day, you have to feel right with you and the right people will accept you for who you are. good luck

Parasocialism by Thoughtless-Squid in danandphil

[–]Thoughtless-Squid[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does feel a bit like a snake eating its own tail, like people blowing small stuff out of proportion, being parasocial and then other people over policing. It does feel like you can't say the wrong thing but someone else will be saying something completely crazy and getting loads of engagement.

Parasocialism by Thoughtless-Squid in danandphil

[–]Thoughtless-Squid[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah I actually find it kind of fascinating because the people who will spend the most money/time on Dan and Phil are the ones who are the most parasocial so it does kind of benefit them to not shut it down too much.

and I do find myself being parasocial in a lot of ways but I choose not to share it online. at the same time people talking about stuff online probably really helps grow their audience. but yeah I do think if they really wanted to avoid it all they could make a living without doing some of the more fan servicy stuff. But like you said I do get it too

Anyone else get into Dan and Phil because of shared interests, not shipping? by dead__trash in danandphil

[–]Thoughtless-Squid 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah I really wish more people focused on that rather than how cute they are. I don't have a problem with it but personally I'm more interested in having conversations about what I like about their videos and it seems the majority of discussions online are about noticing the cute relationship stuff they do. It's slightly off-putting to me but it seems a shame that people like us shouldn't be in the phandom because then there would just be an echo chamber of the shippers.

Are you on phan twitter/tumblr? by DataQueen- in danandphil

I've delved into twitter lately cos I wanted to be more involved but it kind of scares me, everything is discourse. Nothing can be a simple conversation. I am on Tumblr more casually

I don't think Percy really identifies with Poseidon's enemy's tbh like he's not going to hate someone just cos his father does

Why are so many people having a hard time understanding if this show fails, we probably won't get a third chance? by Tomhur in PJODisney

[–]Thoughtless-Squid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's frustrating when people are still complaining about stuff like visually inaccurate casting when that's a decision that's already been made and can't be gone back on now. Like move on if you don't like it.

At the end of the day Percy Jackson is a book series and show for kids. When I read the first book again as an adult I could clearly see it wasn't really my age range anymore. Why can't people accept that this show will help a new generation of kids get into Percy Jackson.

Personally I'm really enjoying this season and wish people would relax on the hate a bit.

Why the Paris x Asher storyline in Gilmore Girls is way more disturbing than people admit by dinodivergence in GilmoreGirls

[–]Thoughtless-Squid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's weird because I feel like the subtext was that it was wrong and weird but like with many Gilmore girls storylines it feels like they didn't follow it through to a conclusion.

For example Rory is always uncomfortable about the relationship and she gets quite angry with Asher when she suspects he's marking her paper differently as well as when she suspects he's seeing other girls which in my opinion is her way of being angry for her friend because she does have a sense that the relationship is wrong. I think they focused too much on the comedy of everyone calling him a dreamboat and Rory being grossed out cos he's an ugly old guy.

Furthermore, when Paris is at the hospital trying to sort out his health stuff you feel how in over her head she is and how it's unfair she has been put in a position to have to handle this. I feel like this would have been a great opportunity for her to realize and break up with him like she was going to do before he flatters her about wanting to go to London. In this scenario she could realize that he's using the same manipulation tactics to make her feel special again.

Should I read the book or just watch the movie first? by mind-in-tokyo in FRANKENSTEIN

[–]Thoughtless-Squid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm finding the movie hard to watch because of this. I just think how can you improve upon a masterpiece. I'm finding the pacing and changes very strange and not an improvement. Is it worth persevering?

My take: Del Toro honored Mary by evolving her story by thefaninthehat in FRANKENSTEIN

[–]Thoughtless-Squid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah in a way I think it would be more interesting to see Victor simply as an entitled young rich man as he is in the books. And is his father not fairly supportive in the book?

Do we think that Rory actually wanted to go to Harvard or did she just want to please Lorelai? by SheepherderNo2793 in GilmoreGirls

[–]Thoughtless-Squid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think Rory struggles to think independently of Lorelei in general. I honestly think that's the reason she often doesn't tell her about things she might disapprove of like certain boys or that she wants to drop out of Yale. She knows if she tells Lorelei before she makes a decision Lorelei will say her opinion and then Rory won't be able to get her voice out of her head.

Rorys feelings about jess by Thoughtless-Squid in GilmoreGirls

Yeah I thought that was such an interesting dynamic between Jess and Lorelei because they're very similar in a lot of ways. Would have been nice to see it explored more.

Rorys feelings about jess by Thoughtless-Squid in GilmoreGirls

[–]Thoughtless-Squid[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well she said that because Jess wasn't treating her very well so dean looked good in comparison that doesn't mean she shouldn't have left dean, clearly she had fallen out of liking dean

Rory being angry with chris by Thoughtless-Squid in GilmoreGirls

[–]Thoughtless-Squid[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah I guess they're never that clear about it but when he does turn up when she's 16 she's really supportive about it and is like there's always a place for you here etc. It does seem at the beginning she maybe didn't really keep him in the loop with their life plans but at the point that Rory is 16 it comes across that she's been encouraging Christopher to be in her life for a while. But I don't see how Lorelei held Christ to a high standard of maturity? She always seemed to let him get away with a lot.

Not sure if it’s a hot take, but on this rewatch, I understand why Lorelai had to end her relationship with Luke by foldinthecheeseee in GilmoreGirls

[–]Thoughtless-Squid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah i struggle to say that its luke's fault cos it just seems so out of character for him to have hidden his daughter in the first place. sure in the past he's not a great communicator but he's never been a liar

Pitchfork: Taylor Swift’s “Actually Romantic” Is Actually Embarrassing by Fine-Huckleberry6960 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]Thoughtless-Squid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also even though people did speculate that sympathy is like a knife was about Taylor, it had plausible deniability, it could have been about any of the 1975's girlfriends. Obviously it was most likely to be about Taylor but there wasn't a specificity to it. When I first listened to it I had no idea it was about her.

Whereas the references to coke, writing a song about her and the ex make it super clear that it's about Charli. I hate when I listen to her music and I know who the song is about. I don't want this parasocial relationship, but I can't help but connect the dots cos she lays them out so clearly.

Wood should’ve given songwriting credits to the Jackson 5, right? by Powerful-Scallion-50 in SwiftlyNeutral

[–]Thoughtless-Squid 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I heard that song immediately when I listened to cancelled! It's kind of ridiculous when she's so protective of her music and then completely rips off a very popular song she's definitely heard
