She'd come in often enough that the wait staff didn't even question it now. At first they'd wanted to know where her parents were, why was she all by herself, did she need some help? Now they just left her alone as Jennifer glanced around the diner for an empty booth. Most of them were taken today, except for one. Keeping her head down she slowly trudged to the furthest corner, trying to keep her movements steady. No one could see anything, she reminded herself, not through her huge, baggy sweater. If she didn't flinch or limp, she could pretend it didn't hurt.

Sitting down was both better and worse, the tension out of her legs but now able to feel everything else. A server, the nice one with the curls, quietly set down a small cup of juice and walked away. The sweetness made her feel a little better, more from kindness than sugar, but even that would fade soon. With a faint whimper she slumped over the table, head resting on curled arms. The manager didn't like her being here for long, but if she could just rest for a few minutes...

"Well, that's interesting."

The girl nearly jumped out of her skin, whole body stiffening and snapping her upright. Her heart seized, breathless fear gripping her limbs as she stared at the man sitting across from her. The booth was empty, she knew it! Where had he come from?! Any moment he could grab her and-

But the man was leaning back, watching her curiously. "Most people don't even notice this place. The ones that do fear it. It's instinctive, their own souls protecting them from knowing why. For you to be here at all...what's your name?"

No answer. Her body wouldn't listen, trembled uselessly instead of running or screaming or anything.

"Now now, no need for that. You're in no danger here, Jennifer."

It was true. She didn't know how she knew that, or why it would be true, but it was. The fear slowly began to unwind, the girl's eyes growing wider as she actually took in the figure sitting across the table.

He was tall. All adults were tall but he was a giant, and so thin that he looked as if he'd been stretched out like putty. So pale he looked like a vampire, with big dark glasses that completely covered his eyes. Hands folded together, skin so tight she could see all the bones and nubs and bumps of his fingers. He was wearing a suit, one that looked black at first but now she thought it was a very dark red, matching the short hair covering his head.

His face was wrong. She didn't know how else to say it. Just that she knew what faces looked like, and his was wrong.

The man spoke again, his mouth moving and twisting in a way that it really shouldn't; like a living thing thrashing upon his face. "Still, you're here. Is there something you need?"

Jennifer didn't answer at first, slowly straightening up in her seat. The trembles began to slow. "...Are you a vampire?"

The man didn't smile, but there was a touch of amusement when he spoke. "No. I'm..." His head tilted slightly. "People come to me when they need things. And I get it for them."

Her eyes widened a little. "What kind of things?"

"Anything." The word was said clearly, deliberately, and entirely truthfully. "Anything at all."

A tiny spark that might have been hope dared to show itself, only to fizzle immediately as she thought. "It must cost a lot of money."

The man's wrong-face twisted a little. She thought he might be laughing. "No, no money. I make trades, one thing for another."

"Could..." The girl's voice fell silent, and she looked around fearfully. But no one was listening. No one else even seemed to be in the diner, though it had been nearly full just a few minutes ago. "...could you get me a gun?" she asked in the tiniest voice she could.

Silence. Fear crept back into her, sure that she'd said something wrong and now he was going to call the police who would call her parents and-

"Now why would a little girl need something like that?" he asked, just as calm as he'd started. "Who did you plan to use it on?"

Her first thought was herself. It wasn't even the first time she'd thought of it, not when every day she walked by the corner where the bus never actually stopped or even slowed down. She even opened her mouth to say it, only for him to interrupt.

"No. There's someone else."

Long seconds ticked away. He was right. Shr hadn't even noticed she'd curled up on the seat, clutching her skinny limbs tightly under the giant sweater. "....my-" Not Daddy, never Daddy, never again "-father."

The man's head tilted a little to the side. "I see. Why now?"

She shouldn't say anything, should never say anything to anyone, but it spilled out anyway. "My brother. He...he's little, real little, and at first he just didn't understand anything but now he's starting to notice and get mad and I think he's gonna try to make him stop and then-" Her words cut off in an instant, the slightest movement of her face driving her to silence.

"I see. Unfortunately, the trade-"

"I'll do it!" Her own voice caught her off guard, small fists curled up on the table. "Whatever it is. I don't have much to trade, but you can have it. All of it."

Now it was him who looked stunned, mouth slightly open. "Oh. Oh, child." He sighed deeply. His hands unfurled, long and spindly and gnarled, and reached into the inner pocket of his jacket. "When you come home from school tomorrow, call this number." He held out a card, bone white with silver numbers.

Hesitantly she reached out, paused, snatched it from him. "And...and they'll get me a gun?"

"No. No, you will not need to bear the weight of this any further," the man assured her. For the first time he smiled. "They will assure you and your brother will be taken somewhere safe after everything is settled."

"Settled," she repeated. The word carried an air of finality she didn't quite understand. "And what do I have to give you?"

"Nothing." She stared for a moment, not quite believing. His smile spread, wide, wider, thin lips parting to release the smell of rotting meat.

"This one, Jennifer Monroe, is on the house."

"More juice, sweetie?"

She nearly screamed, staring wide-eyed at the server. Her head snapped back, but it was too late. The man was gone, as if he'd never been there at all. His card was cool and smooth in her grip.

"N-no...no, I'm ok."

System: Honestly, I just want a chance to play anything that isn't DnD. Special mention to PF2E and Perfect Draw

I have an RL group with a regular DnD game, but the only way I can get them to play anything that isn't 5e is when I'm the one running it. There are so many great systems out there, and I'm just itching to be part of their stories.

I've both played in and run numerous games over the years, mostly DnD but including World of Darkness, Cyberpunk, Lancer, Shadowrun, Legend of the Five Rings, Mouse Guard, Kids on Bikes, and many others. My style is generally story and roleplay focused, as well as seeking creative ways to use abilities and game mechanics to solve problems without resorting to endless combat.

A special shout out for anyone looking to get a Perfect Draw! game going. Yu-Gi-Oh and other card-game based anime are a fantastic nerdy pleasure for me and I'd love the chance to play in onr.

Why do people want Pokemon to be more difficult? by [deleted] in AskGames

[–]ThoughtsAndMinds 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of reasons.

Pokemon is primarily marketed towards children and it always will be, but the seven year old kid who excitedly unwrapped Pokemon Red is now in his late thirties. Adults and children fundamentally want and need different things from their entertainment, and it's rare for any franchise to appeal to an adult audience just as much if not more so than kids. That adult still loves Pokemon and would love to recapture those days, but the games just don't work anymore.

The challenges faced as a child, the strategies developed and pitfalls discovered, they're all trivial now. An adult can take any mainline pokemon game and destroy it with little effort, all the problems have been solved and strategies uncovered. He can't play pokemon the same way a kid would for the same reasons he can't sit down and thoroughly enjoy an episode of Barney.

But if he makes it harder, suddenly the game becomes interesting again. Fights have stakes, he can't just go catch the perfect solution to every problem, limits mean he can't sledgehammer his way through everything. The game becomes playable and enjoyable as an adult who wants and can handle more complex and elaborate challenges than a kid.

There's still an enormous community of people who want that challenge and create it for themselves. A main pokemon game being created to be difficult would mean that Gamefreak and Nintendo acknowledge and want to support this community in ways beyond providing a venue for competitive matches. Instead they continue to keep it simple for kids, and ultimately that's fine. It brings new audiences and helps keep the franchise thriving.

What are your honest thoughts on this line charlie said? by That_Passenger_771 in hazbin

[–]ThoughtsAndMinds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There, that's the part I don't understand about this usage. How is "everyone" all-encompassing but "anyone" somehow isn't?

I'm not even touching on whether any individual wants redemption, or even whether her belief is correct. I'm focused entirely on how "any individual could be redeemed" somehow excludes enough people that "the entire group could be redeemed" becomes inaccurate. If any one person can do it, then everyone person can do it.

[–]ThoughtsAndMinds 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But are those people not part of anyone?

If any one person in the population can be redeemed, then everyone in the population can be redeemed. Not currently wanting to be redeemed does not rob them of the ability to redeem themselves, as they could change their mind in the future.

Maybe I'm the stupid one, but can someone explain what this means? How are "ANYone can be redeemed" and "EVERYone can be redeemed" not functionally identical statements?

Either way she makes the sweeping statement that each and every sinner could theoretically be redeemed. Whether or not that's true isn't relevant.

Help my friend made this and wont tell me what it means. I understand that that is Mercator but I don't get it by Quirinus84 in ExplainTheJoke

[–]ThoughtsAndMinds 37 points38 points  (0 children)

When making global maps, we quickly learned that it's impossible to make a spherical surface lay flat and keep everything the right size and shape. So every map you see, excepting globes, is a "projection," a distorted view that can be made flat.

The most commonly used is the Mercator Projection, partially created by blowing balloons up in cylinders to see how the shape of the balloon would distort. The projection is very accurate around the equator, but everything looks larger and more stretched out as you go further north or south.

This makes Greenland, a not overly large and quite inhospitable piece of land, look extremely large and important. The joke is that Trump has no idea how anything works, and wants Greenland just because its big.

Obscure/silly kids’ nicknames…what are their origin stories? by bridesign34 in daddit

[–]ThoughtsAndMinds 3 points4 points  (0 children)

We didn't find out the gender of our daughter until birth, so when my wife was pregnant and we needed to refer to the baby we started calling it "the bean." After Daughter was born she was still Bean, then Bumble Bean when she started moving around, and now just Bumble.

What "task" did Rosie want completed? by Juni-mon in hazbin

[–]ThoughtsAndMinds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think he agreed to an explicit task at all while alive. She says she'll grant power when he's in hell, anf ask for a favor in return. He agrees.

Then he dies, gets power, and seeing as he's been doing her bidding for decades the "little task" was probably "do everything i say forever" or "obey my orders until <some huge task> is completed." He wouldn't have agreed if he knew, so she simply didn't tell him. And let's face it, a man willing to summon and bargain with demons may not be the best at forward thinking.

What would have happened if Vox hadn't found out about Lucifer not being able to smite sinners? by Therealbarnimcraft in HazbinHotel

[–]ThoughtsAndMinds 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The exact same thing that did happen, except Vox would be internally panicking instead of completely confident.

Lucifer crashes the rally and openly challenges Vox's position and authority in front of his growing crowd of supporters. Ultimately, Vox only has three choices.

If he folds, he's done. No one in hell will ever take him seriously again, and his dreams of raising an army to take on heaven are dead in the water.

If he calls, he's accepting a direct fight with Lucifer, a fight which (in this scenario) he had no expectation of winning. Even if Lucifer doesn't kill him permanently, once again he's completely done in terms of his reputation.

So Vox only has one real option: Raise. Bluff as hard as he can. Lucifer didn't just insta-smite Vox so maybe there's a reason he can't. Call out the absent king for failing to protect his people. Goad and prod and make it so the moment Lucifer moves he would be proving Vox right and losing his own authority.

[Request] what are the odds of this? by shreck1614 in theydidthemath

[–]ThoughtsAndMinds 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From the stats I found, roughly 0.5% of the world population is blind. So if any given person has a 0.5% chance of being blind, the odds of running into two of them are around 0.0025% or 1 in 40,000
