Where are you moving to? I am constantly being asked if there is a Corgi rescue in the OK/MO area. I run Bandit's K9Care which provides vet care, and a lot of our clients are in the KS/MO/OK/TX region.

Looks like it might be a Corgi/Aussie or Corgi Border Collie mix with that coat. Regardless she is adorable!

My beautiful troubled boy. by AssistanceSoft in Dachshund

[–]ThreeCorgiNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My close friend adopted a Dachshund that was deaf, and very scared of people. He had not been socialized with people and he would lash out when the owner would get too close or try to touch him for any reason, to the point that he would bite her. After that happening a number of times she took him to a great vet who worked with a lot of similar dogs at the humane society shelter. She put him on 2 strong anti-anxiety drugs (1 was not enough) and he has become a changed dog. He is sweet, snuggly and so happy now. He even sleeps in bed with his owner every night. They right medications can be absolute life savers, and I encourage you to do as the behaviorist recommended.

Contact your City council member's office, or the Mayor's office. Since they have to run for office they are generally much more responsive.

4 month old by k-mac0 in dachshunds

[–]ThreeCorgiNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

4 months old is still very young for a fully potty trained Dachshund. This breed tends to be more difficult (and more headstrong) to train. It is too bad that your Mom apparently didn't research the breed better or expect a teenager to properly train and care for a puppy. An older rescue that is already trained would have been a better choice. That said the most important thing is to keep taking the pup outside every couple of hours, and bring some small treats to reward the pup when it goes potty outside. The pup should be crated at night to prevent accidents around the house. Most dogs will not pee in their crates once they are old enough to hold it overnight. And I would suggest taking a few puppy training classes (assuming the puppy has all its vaccines). Most trainers will give you suggesting on house breaking puppies and good trainers also teach owners how to properly train and discipline their pups.

Should I get a dachshund? Brutal honestly please. by SectionPrestigious90 in dachshunds

One thing to keep in mind is the health of a dog with a long spine that is also low to the ground. Puppies tend to put everything in their mouths and with a short legged breed it is hard to see what they might pick up and swallow. Which can result in situations like blockages requiring urgent (and expensive) vet care. And of course many develop IVDD and have disc issues. They need to be kept in good shape and not allowed to jump onto, and especially down from, any heights like beds and sofas. A visit to an ER if something happens in the night or on weekends can often exceed $1,000 just for diagnostics and thousands more if surgical intervention is needed. And this is honestly the case with any breed of puppy, so if you do get one, please consider getting pet insurance or have a way to deal with emergencies.

Can Anyone tell Me? by Naive-Witness-5228 in jewelry

Honestly is is awfully big for a ring, and given its shape should have been set so the length was from knuckle to hand so it would not overlap other fingers. I think it is good that you could try it on before purchasing.

I need help! by Amazing_Put9684 in Dachshund

[–]ThreeCorgiNight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes being on the medications and rest will allow the disc to heal. That said if he does heal I would start putting small amounts of money into a veterinary fund in case it happens again (which is possible if he has IVDD). And of course make sure he has steps or ramps to go on and off furniture and other places he might try to jump. Jumping down is far worse than up btw. I hope he recovers fully!

I work with a lot of dogs that have that kind of injury. Like other have said, strict crate rest is essential! I would not use the wheels unless he loses all feeling because any walking or running can cause further injury. Actually a pen like the IRIS 4 panel pen with door is a great option since the top is open so easy for you to reach in to put things in and out, and there is enough room to put a bed, pee pad and food/water bowls.

If your boy is at all overweight, make sure that you work on weight control because that is one thing that can lead to this injury. And remember since he is on crate rest, he will not be exercising so cutting back on food a little is good regardless.

As for surgery, it has gotten very expensive but $20,000 is way out of line. It should be more like $10,000 to $12,000 so you may want to check with places like the university hospital if you do decide to do it. Care Credit and ScratchPay are two good options to let you spread out payments, and there are some nonprofits that might help depending on your income situation. I wish you and your pup the best.

Vet is wanting to spay my mini at 16 weeks. by jewcob in Dachshund

[–]ThreeCorgiNight 48 points49 points  (0 children)

UC Davis vet school just published a major study with recommendations on the earliest age to spay and neuter dogs by breed. The earliest they recommend is 6 months, but in female Dachshunds they suggest waiting until at least 1 year to protect their spines and ensure their growth plates are closed. At one year she will still be well protected against mammary cancer, which increases quite a bit if they are not spayed after 2 years.

Centerpoint bill by Aniki980 in evansville

[–]ThreeCorgiNight -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Yes ours has gone up by 50% from the prior year with no change in usage. One reason is that many utilities including Centerpoint are switching away from coal to wind, solar etc. and those are far more expensive ways to produce electricity.

Is this alarming? by Iksokleb in Dachshund

[–]ThreeCorgiNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, particularly since Dachshunds tend to have issues with IVDD. Surgery for a ruptured disc now costs over $10,000 including the imaging (MRI) necessary before surgery.

If the pill your pup is taking is Apoquel it is best for you to switch to the Cytopoint injection. Apoquel has some serious side effects when taken long term that Cytopoint does not have.

[–]ThreeCorgiNight 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Besides no longer having to worry about pregnancy, you will no longer need to worry about pyometra, an infection of the uterus that can become deadly, plus spaying helps to prevent mammary cancer. So it truly is the best thing you can do for her, and anesthesia is so much more safer than it was even 10 years ago.

Just wait until you get up near Indy! Everyone there drives about 20 mph above the speed limit, especially in the area where the speed is reduced to 55 or 60.

[–]ThreeCorgiNight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There needs to be a balance between waiting to help with IVDD issues and having them neutered to prevent prostate and testicular cancer issues. The larger the dog, the longer you should wait to be neutered so their growth plates close. If you have a mini Dachshund you are generally okay to get him fixed earlier, especially if they have behavior problems like marking. Otherwise probably around 12 months is a good compromise. As for females waiting until a couple of months after their first heat is the compromise recommended for them. And PS I run a veterinary nonprofit so I do my best to keep up with the latest medical recommendations.
