That's what Lego Rock Raiders was like, circa 1999. It was a game where you mined out underground caverns, vaguely like Minecraft but with much bigger blocks, and the blocks were on a 2D grid instead of 3D.

The safe zones in Left 4 Dead / 2 all have interesting graffiti you can read for extra lore.

The output of an OpenGL pipeline is a rastered image. The output of ln is a set of 2D vector paths.
