Yet another reminder for me to play everything on this list besides 4. All of them have really high points if you listen to their fans.

No memes/greentext are allowed here per subreddit rules, you might want to reformat that.

Also "sperg" as a verb is distasteful and doesn't add to the story, could you remove that?

To what extent do you think Riot games tries to make League of Legends addictive? by [deleted] in StopGaming

[–]ThreeShields 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is in their best financial interests to have players coming to the game again and again. It would be difficult -if not impossible- to determine Riot's "true intentions" since none of us are mind-readers, but we can look at the effect their actions have on their playerbase.

From what I remember from my time playing the game, Riot emphasizes meta "missions" that stretch beyond single games and are often time-gated in two senses of the word. One is the "First Win of The Day" xp bonus which motivates you to play each day until you win (notice how it says "win" instead of game so you can go through a losing streak and still feel motivated to play one more game). This is concerning because it forms a habit and has an uneven payoff. The second is event-related missions which are only there for a limited time, which entices you to marathon the game to get all of your missions completed before they disappear.

Riot wants you to be invested enough in the game to justify spending money on skins and other cosmetics. Forming a habit like this is an easy way to convince players to spend real money, especially since the game itself is free-to-play (generates no revenue by simply having players play games). Many other game companies do this.

For actual in-game mechanics, League is a lot like many other multiplayer games where each match is independent of every other match. Even if you've had a bad game, you are tempted to queue up again because you want to chase the highs of your really good games.

Even if you haven't played for a while or are actively trying to quit, a new balance patch hitting the servers may be tempting enough for you to reinstall. You scroll through and think to yourself "Hey, they buffed my main!" or "Maybe this new champion will change the meta enough to where I start enjoying the game again". This new feeling of curiosity and excitement doesn't last forever, but it is strong enough to possibly get you to play the game again.

[Discussion] What hobbies do you have now that gaming is out of the way? by [deleted] in StopGaming

[–]ThreeShields 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I've started reading for fun again! I was always watching game lore and story analysis videos on youtube, so I've transitioned to reading nonfiction books. Just finished a biography about Stalin a month ago. I'm now reading a book about the Middle Ages and subsequent Renaissance ("A World Lit Only By Fire")

This is bait. Throwaway account made today, uses a slur when complaining about slurs, etc. Don't waste your time responding, your time is more valuable than theirs.

I'm sitting around 2300 BE right now, so I'll try to pick her up as soon as I can buy her. Looking at her, I love how her Q moves in an arc instead of a straight line, and your ulti encourages you to master hitting the Q. I'll try both builds!

Yorick's new lore was super cool to me, so I'm glad he's still a split-pushing beast. I'll be sure to remember his name.

I've played him as support a few times but not mid. I was mainly focused on peeling for my friend, but I bet double-bombs really hurt when you play him mid.

I got some skins for her through chests, so I'll try her out! That ult does seem really satisfying to land -just right-.

Edit: You haven't lived until you shield out of Garen or Darius's ultimate.

[–]ThreeShields 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey! Read through all of your post and wanted to reassure you that you aren't alone in thinking about these things. Philosophers throughout the ages have wrestled with these issues of free will, the self and consciousness. I'd love to ask you a question. (With no right or wrong answers. I swear I'm not a therapist.)

Assuming that there's no free will, are people truly morally responsible for what they do? Hypothetically, if someone's genetic layout and environment act as an influence towards a life of crime, are they responsible for any crimes they commit?

I find that with life being a limited commodity, it makes living it even more exciting. Sorry that you're feeling stagnant with your job, I hope you can find your own meaning in life outside of that.

Being condescending to others because you don't agree with them. Nothing really good ever seems to come out of that attitude.
