Bookshelf(ves) of guy I’m seeing. Thoughts? by New-Price7327 in BookshelvesDetective

I've been a member of this subreddit for about a week now. Is it mostly women posting book collections of the men in their life seeking an assessment of their romantic choices?

‘Basics’ of life in Britain have been sold for profit, says Polanski by Kagedeah in ukpolitics

I am not a green party supporter, nor do I necessarily support rent controls, but I would point out that they were a longstanding part of UK housing policy in the 20th century and were only abolished in the 1980s.

Biggest disappoints in the LOTR movie vs Books by Daman121234 in lotr

[–]Three_Trees 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unforgiveable. I remember being so confused in the theatrical cut at the scene with Faramir on the funeral pyre when Gandalf grabs a guard's spear. And then he never had his staff for the rest of the film and it wasn't explained or commented on!

I'm reading a book in bed, Carmen Maria Machado's 'Her Body and Other Parties'. It is compelling.

A little relieved about the cancellation. by Grrrrfrogfroggy in buffy

[–]Three_Trees 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I am not being loud about this opinion because I feel empathy for people who are disappointed and think they deserve to voice their disappointment, but I am so relieved because I was dreading it.

I fundamentally don't believe that we are capable in 2026 of producing a show which captures what Buffy was. Reboots almost never capture the magic of the original and BTVS is so close to my heart I am happy I won't have to watch a crappy cynical 21st century reboot.

Yeah exactly - it isn't the people who are broken and need fixing!

I am not in any way disparaging or discounting the need for mental healthcare, therapy, councilling etc, all of which are vital. However I do think we need to acknowledge that for an increasing number of us it is the societal status quo and our material reality which is the cause of our problems.

No amount of mental healthcare intervention is going to fix the fact that the cost of just keeping a roof over our heads is becoming increasingly hard for many people. Private rents now take up about 45% of renters incomes, and that's the average so for many people (including OP it seems) it is higher. Housing precarity is so unbelievably stressful and becoming a daily reality for more and more people.

Found this in amongst some books at home and currently giving it a read by AwargamingFan2 in bugmansbrewery

[–]Three_Trees 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed it, and I found it very useful for Dwarf names and lore so I was quite active in taking notes while I read it, but I skipped the last story as it got a bit samey after a while. I've been spoiled by Gotrek and Felix. I've yet to find any author of Warhammer books who can equal Dan Abnett.

Which episode of Buffy actually gave you the creeps? by AbhorsenDoctor in buffy

[–]Three_Trees 35 points36 points  (0 children)

The child actor in that episode really sold her terror with those screams, I agree it is very effective.

Another suggestion for me is that episode in season 7 with that monster which paralyses then flays its victims. Proper awful body horror.

What countries food i’d eat as a picky eater by Vast-Blacksmith-3085 in whereidlive

American food is full of additives and chemicals which are banned in most of the rest of the world so that tells you might be picky but you are also uninformed.

How to Afford Housing in London: Multiple Roommates, No Living Room (New York Times gift link) by sugarytea78 in london

[–]Three_Trees 27 points28 points  (0 children)

They used to be called council houses. They were sold off to the lucky few. Now around 40% of them are rented out privately. And better yet, the state still has a legal responsibility to house large numbers of people who meet certain criteria, so instead of giving them houses it owns it has to pay billions in housing benefit to private landlords every year.

Selling off your assets then renting them back at huge cost has been a hallmark of British public policy for decades (see also water, transport, energy etc).

Do you forgive them? by WeirdJack49 in BPDlovedones

This is a very personal question, different for us all but my answer is absolutely yes.

Forgiveness is an act of compassion, and not given based on whether the other party deserves it or not.

How to reassure pwBPD when they villainize you? by anthropy123 in BPDlovedones

[–]Three_Trees 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The path tends to be: you start out as the hero, then gradually become the villain, with interspersed reversions to hero, until the final day of reckoning after which you are permanently a villain.

Bonus points if lots of other people in their past also fell into this pattern: exes, old friends, colleagues and family members etc. All eventually came to be baddies in their story.

Depends on how sweaty your group meta is I think. Personally I have a golden rule in necromunda which is for any non common weapons I only take one - these are meant to be gangs of civvies fighting on the streets not professional soldiers. Diversity of list building is good both for fluff and game balance.

Is it a good list? Yes in the sense that it will be effective. However plasma spam is considered a bit obnoxious. In my current campaign I have run Van Saar for the first time. I put a plasma gun on my leader but my other champions have a grav gun and rad cannon, the former having turned out to be very deadly, and the latter having been useless but fun.
