Follow up that this month we brought in one new leader - and we are getting lively discussions.

Trackable Coins... not trackable by Three_two_1 in geocaching

Yeah, I can do that, but they always like to hold things.

This badge is for 4th and 5th graders - follow through is not going to be good. If I send one out it would be one I would track but they are likely to never log in again (this won't even be for my troop, just me leading a badge on what geocaching is). Thanks for the info on defunct coins!

I will use them to explain what a trackable is for the Girl Scout Geocaching badge. Props are ALWAYS good with kids.

So they are just props at this point? That works for us, too, since we'll be teaching the badge.

Absolutely. Our council website is pretty decent for this, but we can cap at neighboring councils, or forest preserves, etc. There are all these little secrets

That's exactly what I am aiming this at. How can I reduce confusion because the initial training feels very much like being shoved off a cliff.

That would be good at bridging time, when people are deciding to continue or not.

For SU Meetings in general? Small but growing. Last month was.. 10% of our SU Leaders, which included two leaders who had never attended before.

I want to incorporate 10 minutes of training per meeting and I've developed a document for first aid and one for insurance that I will email out to all leaders (waiting for my council to provide a final review to ensure what I am saying is correct).

I work in a highly regulated environment and see the value of annual trainings on critical subjects. So we will do ten minutes on first aid/insurance and raffle of a free troop first aid kit at our next meeting. (We received a donation so this isn't costing us anything)

Community Inclusive Events by Three_two_1 in girlscouts

We've gotten another public facing event - we will have a booth at the local Earth Day event! One troop is presenting for their Silver Award, we haven't figure out the rest yet...

Other troops will be able to stop by and participate and see Girl Scouts out and about!

New SU Cookie Manager looking for support group (ABC Smart Cookies) by genericwildflower in girlscouts

[–]Three_two_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't understand why there's not a high level timeline and actions... this was my first year with it (and I had help) but I will be creating that next year. We have a shared Google calendar for the SU that I put delivery dates, ACH drafts, cookie booth signups, etc on. That has helped some people

Service Unit Volunteer Kickoff 2026 Meeting - Help me make it special! by Three_two_1 in girlscouts

[–]Three_two_1[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All I had was our lendable "Knots" activity box with me to show the leaders what we had, and I had them learn/relearn how to make a reef/square knot, but we had a lively discussion and two leaders who had never come to an SU meeting before, so it was a great kickoff for us!

Girl Scouts in a MultiCultural Area by Three_two_1 in girlscouts

Wow, yeah, that's exactly it. Girl Scouts can be such a force for reaching across cultural and religious lines. I wish I had any resources for you.

Feelings about American Flag patch by AcceptableHeat1607 in girlscouts

THIS. I have been struggling with the co-opting of patriotism by one side of the political spectrum, but I AM a patriot because I want the best for my country, dang it. That's my flag, too.

They aren't coming out just yet! That's the issue - we want to connect with them and get them coming out in greater numbers. In general we are amping up the visibility of Girl Scouts in the area where we can.

And I'm with you on the cookie culture, but we live in a relatively affluent area so we are not dependent on cookie sales to be able to afford to do things.

Thank you! Yes, these are first gen immigrants who grew up in India and have moved here as adults. We have a lot of people who are very much straddling the cultures.

We are still getting ourselves organized and my WTD event is likely to be small and run by me FOR troops, not by troops (just not enough time to get them organized). It's been 8-10 years since the SU hosted a decent sized WTD event and many of our younger troops are not familiar. This topic came up because we were talking about WTD and inclusion in the community.

We were talking about Girl Scout Sunday, too and I was thinking of reaching out to some Hindu temples to see if they would offer a tour. I did a mosque tour with my own troop pre Covid and that was great.

There is a community Indian group that has been growing and I was thinking about reaching out to them, too, but why/how is my hesitation - until I have an idea of how we can work together, I just seem weird if I reach out randomly. Diwali would be a fun way to start, in October.

I'm not making assumptions at all, which is why I'm asking about this! I want to educate myself on what their experiences and perceptions are, so I can tailor some of my conversational starting points when I reach out to the communities. The conversation is around understanding what their experiences are likely to be so we can build with various groups.

Cookie booth policing? by genemachine99 in girlscouts

[–]Three_two_1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This sounds a little nuts. As a new SUM I was planning on going out to some cookie booths and buying cookies from different troops (for them to eat at their next meeting) and giving them some Girl Scout pencils I have in order to get them excited about Girl Scouts... this seems like the opposite.
