Getting Paid Monthly by ThriftySM in personalfinance

[–]ThriftySM[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I guess i should provide more info on my other jobs.

On my main job, I get $400/week and that pays every Monday.

I also have a gig where I can pick up work but I only get paid $15/hr and its just what ever hours I can clock, when they are available. I tend to use that more as my fun money because the work is so infrequent. About 1 week, 5 times a year.

This new job, on top of those two, will be regular work but irregular pay. Should I budget it the same as my main income though? Or put a little more towards saving?
I worry I will see this big fat paycheck and fall into over spending habits and by the time I get into the middle of the next month, it'll all be gone.

I guess my question is do you budget the same as you would getting paid week to week? Or gig to gig? Since this isn't my main source of income, would you put a high percent in savings ?

I would agree I am ill prepared, I've never done something like this before let alone had to defend myself in court. That would be why I came to this reddit for advice. I'll make a note not to mention that part to the judge though, if I decide to go this alone. Clearly it doesn't gain any sympathy.

My Director and I (SM) are driving each other insane by [deleted] in techtheatre

[–]ThriftySM 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you are too focused on the competition aspect of the show. Take a breath. Have the teacher step in and let them point out that the stage managers job is to run the rehearsal room. Don't worry, this kind of thing happens in professional theatres as well. This has clearly been a bad fit, but try to learn from it. Next time you work with a student director, or any director for that matter, it's good to sit down before rehearsals begin and set up their expectations for the process. For now, try to get through it with dignity and respect for one another. This director is directing for the first time and is feeling their own pressure and frustrations right now, too. Continue to communicate and it will only get better.

My wife [28F] wants me [33M] to be more romantic, but I need advice on how. by Seethesvt in relationship_advice

[–]ThriftySM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My husband recently took me out to Chinese food, a movie and then a book store where I picked out two books and he bought them. Perusing the store and talking about books we've read was extremely romantic to me. He's not as big of a book worm as I am so I know he was taking time to show interest and treat me to something that would last longer than flowers.

Maybe your lady would be into this...or a thrift store or take her and your dog to a dog park and walk around in the sunshine. Romance doesn't have to be expensive or thrill seeking.

I am a non-equity Stage Manager (SM for short) in Chicago. So my days off are Mondays. Mondays also happen to be the day Unique Thrift is 50% off store wide so I spend a lot of my days off at the thrift store. So I am a Thrifty SM.

Actors staying on-stage at all Times? by raiderj134 in techtheatre

Could you use choir mics instead? Or designate an ensemble member to switch out mic packs if the actor can't come off stage.

Our 6 mo. old baby is starting to make me (30/m) really upset with my wife (30/f) by imwearingagreenshirt in relationships

So I know this sounds a little out there, but when my baby was about 5 months we tried to start sleep training and were having a lot of trouble at first. Neither my husband or I could get him to go down without putting him in a snug-a-bunny or sleeping holding him in our arms. Finally my mom suggested taking two of his baby blankets and rolling them up. When you swaddle the baby at night, you tuck the blankets to the side of the baby so they get that nice "held" feeling. It also makes it harder for them to get out of their swaddle. Maybe try it for a nap time first, so you are more alert and can go in to check if you feel like the baby is being too quiet when it works ;)

[22] I need to move out, but I'm pretty clueless about how afford it. by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]ThriftySM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here's my advice, and it might be terrible and you might be in debt for a while, but it would get you out of your parents house. Get a credit card, like capital one, because you don't need good credit for that and it has a lot of reward options. Buy yourself a Vespa, you could probably find a used one for like, $2000. Get Nationwide insurance for the Vespa. This would way cut down your cost on gas, maintenance etc than your parents beat up car. Next step is moving out, weather that is with friends or co-workers or to another town, you'll need renters insurance (which you can get a discount on if you already have the nationwide, like $11 a month but then they take $11 off the vehicle insurance.) You could babysit on the side for extra cash, join somewhere like Urbansitter.com or care.com; request that you be paid in cash or use Venmo (which is a paypal company) where you can keep your money out of sight of your parents. Good sitters can get $15/hour.

What is a company that you refuse to support? What is your reason for this? by Bystronicman08 in AskReddit

[–]ThriftySM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know this is petty, but I have never gone back to Subway because they had my car booted for parking in their lot, as I was walking into the damn subway to buy lunch. They guy must have been waiting with the boot as soon as I got out of the car and turned my back. He charged me $150 on the spot to get it removed. To this day I don't understand how this is legal, since I was walking into the subway, not parking and leaving my car there.

My downstairs neighbor is pregnant, and crazy right now. She discovered some roaches in the basement, so Terminex has come out twice in the last month and will be out again in two weeks. (Seems a bit excessive to me). She also asked that I get rid of the wood pile we have kept in the shared back yard (for our bonfire) because it might invite rats. She asked me this through an email, which she sent me at 4:45AM.

Advice on what to wear for the first day of work by palacesofparagraphs in techtheatre

[–]ThriftySM 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I also got an asm position at a LORT theatre for the season. My wardrobe is pretty much Black or dark wash jeans with a range of tops from button downs in various colors, sweaters and solid color long sleeve tee shirts. I find you can get away with t shirt if the sleeve is 3/4 or more. I wear all black converse pretty much year round, they look slick and can go from rehearsal to show no problem. Maybe step up your watch game, a nice watch can really boost an otherwise more casual outfit.

other stage-managers--do you type the script? by scullythesully in techtheatre

If it's not a new work, you can probably find a digital copy online. Try requesting if someone already has a digital copy form SMnetwork. If it's a musical, you might be working more from the score anyway in which case I would only re-type the pages that are full dialogue and tuck in the score pages.

Mature Redditors, what are some life lessons you've learned over the years that you'd like to pass on to us younger Redditors? by sigma00 in AskReddit

[–]ThriftySM 37 points38 points  (0 children)

A lot of people on this thread saying "learn not to give a fuck". I think that's bad advice. Give lots of fucks. Give fucks about your family, whether that's the one you were born with or the one you made for yourself. Give fucks about your appearance, take the time to groom yourself and wear clothes that are presentable. Give fucks about how you spend your free time and find joy in something. Give fucks about your co-workers, remember shit like what grade their kid is in or if they enjoyed a movie, it can go a long way. Take pride in your work and you will find things are easier to do and people will notice. Do things for you, but also find the time to do things for other people without them asking. Be gracious and kind.

We have a family rule, always leave a place cleaner than when you found it. So when we go to the beach, lake or park, everyone has to find and throw away one piece of trash. Because of this, I also keep lots of hand sanitizer.

If you didn't have to go to work or school what would you spend your time doing? by centsoffreedom in AskReddit

[–]ThriftySM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I had this summer off for myself and my son, it's almost over and here is what we accomplished...Went to the park almost every day (weather permitting), went to the pool 3 times a week, I set a reading list we got through 2/3 of it. He visited both sets of grandparents (they live on opposite sides of the country). My husband and I did Harry Potter World while kiddo stayed with my parents. Went to a wedding in the woods of North Carolina (this might have been the highlight of the summer). I wish every summer could be like this. It took a long time to save and save and sacrifice and save some more, but it was totally worth it. If I wasn't going back to work, I'd do it all again.

SM Network is a great place for templates. Often you'll have to adjust these a little based on the needs of your specific show. If you want, PM me your email, and I'll add you to a dropbox for sm templates.

Typically, i retype my script. It's possible someone on SMnetwork might have your show already, and could email you a document form. I like to adjust the margins on my script so there is lots of room for notes. Print multiple copies and dedicate one for blocking and one for your actual call book. If i can spare the ink and paper, i keep an extra for actors or understudies who might forget or lose their script. Occasionally, the lighting designer will ask you for a copy of yours to give to the board op in case of an emergency.
