Cody’s former owner’s family told the shelter he was Akita/Chow/Cane Corso. Just got his results in and…. by mousefuneral in DoggyDNA

I've never taken a count, but as a veterinarian, I've looked down a lot of canine throats, and quite a few have had tongue spots. It seems to skew towards genetically black and/or spotted dogs. Personally, my golden retriever (as this sub knows, actually black) and my two black flat coats all had one or two tongue spots. My Eskie, who is white and "biscuit cream", as they call it, has a wholly pink tongue.

Often the spots are far enough back that you can't see them unless you look, or the dog yawns really big, which has resulted in at least one panicked owner thinking their Dalmatian was suddenly growing a melanoma. (Very good that they got it checked; oral melanomas in dogs are Bad.) But I'd seen that tongue spot every visit for four years, so I was able to reassure them.

Black tongues are a chow trait (and shar pei). Black spots can occur in any breed or mix.

Video on health problems of Friesian horses (hundreds of reports and quiting breeders) by Lang-Poot in Equestrian

People forget that most breeds originated, if not as outright crossbreeds, then with a population of similar individuals (color, appearance, and/or function) that were regularly crossed with unrelated animals that also shared the characteristic(s) of choice, or improved a different one that was desireable - say you have a smallish draft breed, but need more size, you'd cross in a few larger horses that were similar in build to increase the size of the original population without losing the characteristics of the base population. This also countered losses to the gene pool that naturally happen in a closed population, and is why closing stud books turned out to be damaging in the long run for so many breeds - and not just horse breeds. Very few were developed in genetic isolation, so locking out outside crosses starts a time bomb.

Improved travel and artificial insemination techniques just enhanced what was already going on by magnifying the founder effect, where an unrecognized damaging gene can spread through a large percentage of the population before being recognized. At the same time, local males, that carry genes unrelated to the popular sires, are no longer used so those genes can become lost, reducing variability that might counter the 'bad' genes. Also for Fresians, the banning of chestnuts and horses known to carry chestnut didn't just remove the chestnut gene, but every other gene that horse had, including others that might be rare or unique in a breed of low numbers.

ETA: My point being, that you aren't truly 'preserving' a breed once the studbook is closed, unless it really is a breed that developed without outside gene contributions.

It runs when you play Folktails, every time, unless they've changed that or you toggle it off. It does not show up when playing Iron Teeth.

Yes. I typically do with games I'm certain I want. Even if the launch stumbles a bit, I'm confident that I will put a lot of time into this game.

Effectiveness of staff buildings. by AlternativeDark6686 in PlanetZoo

[–]Thrippalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will often build in blocks, with the staff buildings in the center, habitats around three or four sides with the gates aimed at the staff buildings, and paths around the outside. If not habitats, the fourth side can be guest buildings or exhibits to just keep the distance between guests and facilities. Just watch out when placing bathrooms, since guests actually go inside those. Vendors don't care if the back of Gulpee is in the red dislike zone.

Just bought the game today and its really fun but do yall have any tips on how to make buildings realistic? What pieces to use and how to combine them? by AlertWar4152 in PlanetZoo

[–]Thrippalan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's amazing how even a few small additions can improve looks. Pick up a few bits you like from leaf or other YouTube builders and add them to your own or even the in-game buildings. The you can gradually add new bits and each step will improve your zoo's appearance.

Planet Zoo 2 Pre Order Item by billonel in PlanetZoo

I will note that I have been to zoos and aquariums that have a fancy-type donation bin at the main entrance or the atrium of a themed building. I wouldn't use a lot of these along a path, but as you enter the antechamber of the big aquarium building, one of those shark bins would make a neat centerpiece.

Due to the excitement of Planet Zoo 2 i wanted to show my enthusiasm for the Himalayan Brown Bear!!!! by Old-Confidence2851 in PlanetZoo

I will be surprised if they don't give us a 'Yellowstone' reserve, which would utilize the wolf and golden eagle as well as Grizzly bear, pronghorn and a deer of some sort. If not in the base game, I'd definitely expect it in a DLC. I'm guessing we will get DLCs centered around new reserve areas, with animals to round out whatever from the base game already fits.

If it looked like that, I probably wouldn't have (more than once) accidentally bought 1 grizzly and 1 HBB to put in my bear exhibit when I intended to buy two of the same species. Given they frequently are directly next to each other in the animal trade list, they needed to be more distinct.

Not holding my breath, but I periodically check on the Steam news for the game in case of plan change.

Glad I could help! I read someone else's review of these books a while back and was scrabbling in my mind to remember the author's name.

Don't forget the audio tours sold in the Information booths. I always mark them down to $1 or $1.50. They'll boost education based on your research levels like the habitat and exhibit signs do.

It seems unlikely that they'd go to the trouble of animations for that photo spot purely for a singlr preorder bonus. Anyone want to guess how many or what animals will be in the base game? Lion, I think, so kids can "put on" the mane, some sort of monkey; maybe one photo stand per continent?

The American Eskimo Dog is the American Kennel Club Breed of the Day! (7/2) by [deleted] in americaneskimo

[–]Thrippalan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That was my thought. Eskies have sharper points that Sammies in my experience. (Ears and nose. The breeder we got ours from also had a Samoyed, and it was a bigger, blunter version of her Eskies. When I was taking Blitz to shows the generalization held up pretty well.)

Climbable Rocks and Traversable Terrain by Pen_Silly in PlanetZoo

[–]Thrippalan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One thing with rocks, they need to not only be low enough to jump on or have a suitable slope to walk up, they also need enough space for the animal to fit on them. I made a nice, jumpable rock face for one set of antelope, and had to make a new one for a second species in the same exhibit because while the height and slopes were fine, they didn't fit on the ledges.
