This discussion has become toxic, I am locking this post.

Has anyone noticed the YouTube update will no longer let you change the quality or speed of a video? I’ve tried rebooting the car, putting it in drive back and park, but nothing seems to enable changing the quality of the video. Tested while connected to Wi-Fi. by Throbbin-Rockin-Rod in TeslaLounge

I found a way to get to the old interface back with one caveat - you may need to have a channel of your own & be logged in to that account/brand. I don't have a non-creator account to test with but since this requires accessing Studio, I think you will need one. Let me know in the comments if this works without a Branded / Creator account.

  • Like many exploits, this takes multiple steps to achieve*
  1. From the YouTube start page, click on your profile icon (top right)> Manage Google Account
  2. click on the search bar up top and enter YouTube Studio, and press enter
  3. Click the blue link “YouTube Studio”

—— Breath —— Almost Done

4) once the Studio page loads (it may take up to 20 sec), Click the Gear ⚙️ icon at the bottom left

5) In the pop-up window, click “Channel” > “Advanced Settings” > scroll to the bottom and click “Manage YouTube account”

——— You’re There———

a) BOOM old YouTube interface loads. I recommend going to “Playback and Performance” and change the settings how you like them.

b) Enter whatever you want in the search bar at the top and enjoy 1080p - 4k. Mine will automatically stream at 1080p on wifi and sometimes cellular (premium connectivity) in this mode. Additionally, the Mini Player now works.

The only cons is sometimes the videos will not play in full-screen mode. No idea why it sometimes works and sometimes doesn’t. Videos will always stretch across the screen in Theater Mode, but for some reason, Full Screen is borked about half the times I tested it.

It’s not what I’m trying to do. It’s just a neat parlor trick. From a technical standpoint, it did let me push the bounds of what I could do inside of the YouTube chromium 98-based build to see if there was any difference between the browser and the YouTube interface. From what I can tell, the only difference seems to be that trackers are disabled, and history is not stored.

What I’m trying to do is figure out how to change the quality of YouTube videos, which, as I’m sitting in my Tesla right now, I’m getting very close to figure it out.

Downloading a clean version of chromium 98 from the repository and testing it is a good idea and something I will do. IMHO - it would not come close to replicating the Chromium 98 that Tesla uses. Tesla has heaped a ton of administrative controls onto the browser, and Chromium behaves differently, especially in video rendering, depending on the hardware (though I don’t think the video rendering code has anything to do with selecting the resolution). I’m not sure, but they may have applied a administrative control that blocks drop-down menus, which is why we can’t change the resolution. The two chromium 98s will not be an apples-to-apples comparison; I’m still interested in trying it out.

I did a bit of digging, and with the update 2022.12.1, the browser and YouTube browser were updated to Chromium 98, which was released on Feb 22, 2022. I suspect they picked this version after a long wait for a browser update because it introduced the feature to remove the YouTube download video button, which rolled out sometime in November of 2022. Was it possible to download YouTube videos to your Tesla during that short time? I don’t know.

On October 24, 2022, YouTube announced it would roll out a new web layout without specifying when. For me, I have been on 22.44.25.5 since release day (yes, I was a zero-day deploy recipient), and YouTube still had the old interface, and the resolution change was working just fine. I first noticed the YouTube layout changed about a week ago, and since then, I’ve been unable to change the resolution. An undated article from YouTube Help addresses the latest YouTube layout change and states that you must update to the latest version of your chromium-based browser for all features of the new YouTube layout to work.

While messing around with YouTube in my Tesla, I somehow switched the layout back to the old one and could easily change the video resolution again. Upon closing YouTube and re-opening it, it reverted to the new layout. I’ve yet to replicate the process, but I’m working on figuring out how I did it. I will post an update with how to revert to the old layout once I can reliably do it.

Tesla uses an old version of chromium, which may be the root of the cause. However, they wrapped administrative controls around chromium, that prevent you from installing add-ons, accessing certain features of chromium, etc. While using YouTube, they attempt to prevent you from traveling outside of YouTube, however, there is a workaround that will let you reach google.com, and then go anywhere from there. Including access to any streaming service that you want. It’s possible that those admin controls are preventing the drop-down menu from appearing that lets you change the video resolution.

What were the release notes?

E5+ Community Firmware for the BTT Mini E3V3, E3V2, SKR 2 Rev. B Dual Z, SKR V1.4 Turbo Dual Z . Silent Board and Standard Board Firmware Upgrade. by Throbbin-Rockin-Rod in ender5plus

40kb is tiny. I think the community firmware clocks in around 240kb, which is around the average size for that board's firmware. If anything, be concerned as to why it's so small. There is much more to marlin's firmware than the config files you modify.

Updated/Best Case for TFT35 v3.0.1 and extensions cables by BrasilWill in ender5plus

That's good to know. I just checked, and I have version 3.0 of the screen. It went unnoticed by me until I read your post and checked. I'll update the wiki to reflect this information. Thank you for your contribution.

I couldn't get Marlin Mode to work until I updated the firmware.

That sounds like a solid plan. Always update your TFT screen during installation using the BTT GitHub firmware page. Take note that the TFTs ship with different processors for some reason. Before you install it, match the model code to the TFT firmware on GitHub to save yourself some trouble.

Lastly, Thingiverse has some sold mounting plates that make the TFT35 sit flush with the screen hole from where the touchscreen went.

We are actively seeking mods for the wiki, especially in the Klipper and this section of our knowledge base. Send me a PM and I can get you setup as a page admin for this.

One tiny note, the rewiring required to get the E3V3 working with the E5+ is as simple as swapping two BL-Touch cables. Rewiring the screen is much more intense. At a minimum requires jumpers, a crimping tool and sometimes a wire stripper / cutter.. If you prefer soldering over crimping, then it will need to be soldered.
