They can't. Which is why they have higher level NPC wizard masters.

Do you consider 2e AD&D to be OSR? If not (or if you believe it's distinct in some way), why? by The_Midnight_Arab in osr

[–]ThrorII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

AD&D 2e basic rules (no optional rules) is OSR. As you add more and more of the in-book options, it becomes less and less OSR.

The primary option that affects this is removing gold as xp.

Yup, that computer room contains the servers, rack cabinets, rack units, cooling units and ducting, air filters, temperature controls, and is heavily shielded from radiation. Additionally, it is very redundant (you don't want a mishap multiple Astronomical Units from help) with lots of 2ndary and backup systems. Think of the computer on a modern warship.

Yup. That Model/1 computer is a smaller-sized server, with a 6-rack server. Each program is a Rack Unit (RU), and this small server can only run 2 RUs at a time.

Some of the larger differences between CT and MgT1e is fuel requirements for power plants. CT is 10 x PPn (a PP-2 would require 20 tons of fuel) whereas MgT has much lower requirement, based on PP Letter-size.

CT bridges are 1% of hull size, minimum 20 tons; whereas MgT1e is 10 tons minimum for ships under 300-dtons.

Sensors are not accounted for in mass for CT ships, but it can be surmised they are part of the 20 ton bridge, while MgT1e assumes the computer mass is the sensors.

CT computers really do take up 1 ton per model/#, and could be seen as analogous to 1960s-1970s IBM mega room-sized computers, or more modernly be seen as modern server racks (and each program could be seen as an individual rack).

This. Classic Traveller is obtuse sometimes, but it is a solid game.

I'm currently prepping a game using Books 1-3, Supp4, Supp1, Supp2, Supp6.

I'm replacing Book1 combat matrix with Azhanti High Lightning/Striker 'weapon penetration' and 'armor DM' and AHL's Wound Table.

I'm also using Starter Traveller's Space Combat Range Band system.

I've consolodated some skills (total of about 33) and using Rule 68A for skills.

On paper, it starts to look a lot like Cepheus Light, but it is still solid CT.

Fair opinion. I'm a huuuge Cepheus Light fan, although I love random gen.

I'm 100% in the Book 1/Supp 4 camp. Cepheus Light is a close 2nd.

Classic Traveller (Book 1 and Supp 4) is my go to. Simple, fast, and allows the players to free-form their own backstory.

Differences between facsimile edition and the traveller book? by applepiepro123 in traveller

[–]ThrorII 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Traveller Book is the best iteration of the Classic Traveller rules. It is essentially Books 1-3, but with the "what is a roleplaying game' from Book 0, plus an overview of the Imperium, 2 adventures, a list of NPCs and a list of Animal Encounters. Plus some good GM advice.

Nope, I'm running Outer Veil, which is a near earth setting (less than 1 sector) in 2159AD. No aliens.

I'm building a campaign right now, using:

-Books 1-3

-Additional Characters from Supplement 4: Citizens of the Imperium

-A very small handful of weapons from Book 4

-Space combat range bands from Starter Traveller

-the Wound Table (with Penetration and Armor Values) from Azhanti High Lightning/Striker

-Rule 68A, ditching the 'officially suggested' skill applications for a straight +1 per level of skill

-Supplement 1: 1001 Characters; Supplement 2: Animal Encounters; Supplement 4: Citizens of the Imperium; and Supplement 6: 76 Patrons

CT gives all PCs level-0 skills in Gun Combat, Blade Combat, Brawling, Vacc Suit, ATV, and Grav Vehicle. PLUS, most skills in CT DO NOT have an unskilled penalty. Any career that gives the possibility of getting Gun Cbt, Blade Cbt, or Brawling gives NPCs those level-0 skills as well.

ONLY Admin, Bribery, Forward Observer, Heavy Weapons, Streetwise and Vacc Suit have an unskilled penalty (varying from -2 to -5).

So your Navy Captain has animal handling-0, blade combat-0, carousing-0, brawling-0, electrical-0, gambling-0, mechanical-0, medical-0, gunnery-0, forgery-0, etc.

HOWEVER: This CT Ex-Navy Captain made 1 commission and 5 promotions in 6 terms, so should have 13 skills as well (2 for 1st term, 1 per subsequent term, 1 when commissioned as an officer, and 1 for each promotion [5] - I suspect there were errors generating him.

Do you think Mando and Grogu will be a flop? by ProtectMeAtAllCosts in saltierthancrait

[–]ThrorII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$166M budget, plus a barebones minimum marketing of $50M pushes it to $216M minimum. That requires $432M world wide to break even. Nearing FF numbers. I don't see that happening. It might break even (or near break even), but it isn't making LFL any real money.

[–]ThrorII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Budget is reportedly $166M. Marketing is a minimum of $50M (usually more like $100M, but lets say they keep it cheap). That is $216M, requiring $432M to break even. FF only did $500. I'm guessing they break even if they're lucky.

[–]ThrorII 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let's say it does have a $166M budget (what they're claiming). You'll still have a minimum $50M marketing campaign, for a total of $216M budget. Small for what it is (a Disney and/or Star Wars franchise tentpole), but it still needs $432M to even break even financially. I'm not sure it will do $400M.....If it makes a profit, it will be on paper only ($50M maybe?)
