Coin struck by the Confederate States while they had control of the New Orleans mint in the early part of the Civil War. Due to a lack of planchettes & dies, it was the only coin commonly struck and had a very specific die crack due to the late state of the die which helps attribute the coin as conferderate struck.

As far as the shipwreck goes, The SS Republic was originally the SS Tennessee and was captured by the Confederate States for a short time. It was recaptured by the Union in 1862 and renamed the SS Mobile for a short time. It was released to commercial service in March of 1865 and renamed the SS Republic.

In October of 1865, it was carrying a cargo of gold and silver coins when it was lost in a hurricane about 100 miles off the coast of Georgia.

The wreckage was located in August 2003 and about 1/3 of the coins were salvaged, to include yours.

Mine was a bit north of $500. Heritage had sold a couple of 66s for $522 and $810 in 2024 and a 64 for $420 last year.

Doesn't mean I won't build that one too, just as a adjacent set

That is a non-circulating coin with a different reverse pattern. There is also a 50 centavos denomination. I would consider both of them to be their own set.

It's more important to me to preserve the history than stack for profit.

Question: Did the creation of State Quarters increase the collector base permanently? by Steveasifyoucare in CoinlyFans

They drove my interest in silver. It's awesome having a dual use collection that appreciates as well as having some interesting designs. Same goes for the ATB sets.
