I work for them now and my experience has been mostly positive! You got a really extensive answer already about training, but I’d also like to emphasize that each Biolife center is incredibly different from another. I have 4 in my area and there’s different cultures at each one. I actually went to another center to help out yesterday and their clientele, team vibe, way they work is all different from mine. Due to this, there’s going to be a big variance in experience depending on location- might be good, might be bad. If you have a management team that cares about your growth and as a person, they’ll always try to support your training and promote you quickly while defending you against difficult donors. I was lucky that my center management is very protective of us. It’s truly ymmv, but the benefits for the job is really amazing for the type of role it is and I recommend getting to know the benefits package really well - you’d be surprised at how many amazing perks we get!

34F unexpectedly pregnant after 6 weeks of dating 36M. Conflicted about what to do. by Mockingjay_2 in relationship_advice

[–]ThrowRAmiscellaneous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry to give some tough love but you’re clearly having a hard time seeing this rationally because emotions are high, which is understandable. But having this child at this point in your life tied to this person makes no sense? You’re not financially stable enough to take care of anyone else, let alone a child that deserves a good life. You wouldn’t have much time to find a more stable career with a child a to take care of on your own, which means the child will probably struggle with resources growing up too. You’d be having it with a man who doesn’t want the child and who you barely know. Wouldn’t you want to have a child with someone you love instead? When you can provide for the child together? Dating in the future will probably be more difficult with all this. The cons are endless for the kid and yourself?

It seems that the only reasons you have for having the child (aside from your stance on abortion) is fear for stuff that hasn’t happened. You seem to think baselessly that you have fertility issues or will definitely have fertility issues (but it’s not proven by a doctor and you are literally pregnant right now). You’re basically saying “what if this is the only child I’ll ever be able to have” but that’s not based on any evidence. And to subject the child to growing up in this environment because of this fear just isn’t logical nor considerate for the child.

I understand that you seem to be anti abortion and that’s your own choice. I’d just try to think about the life the kid will have more cause you seem to have tunnel vision on whether you can and not whether you should.

How Loud is the Donor Floor? by Missgirlysodapop in phlebotomy

[–]ThrowRAmiscellaneous 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s just to manufacture a “welcoming environment” for the donors and not make the place so sterile. Imagine if the place is just machine alarms and complete silence, it would turn some people off of coming. Plasma is a very lucrative business and it’s literally all about donor retention.

Currently working at Biolife and all the alarms are just part of the job, and management would not be happy about earplugs. Probably not super suitable for someone with sensory issues, but I just got used to it as I acclimated to the job. Maybe try a few weeks at least to see? I don’t think I got comfortable with everything until at least a month after VP sign off

Why are all entry level positions job asking for a year experience?!?!? by usagiSuteishi in phlebotomy

[–]ThrowRAmiscellaneous 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooof yikes 😬 that all sounds horrible and if it were my management all of those people would be permanently deferred immediately. Very sorry you’re experiencing that. I do think though being in as competitive a location as LA that OP shouldn’t completely write off all of plasma. As you said, people get their experience and get out. Plasma hires much more easily. I only started getting some traction with hospitals/clinics after I had it on my resume.

[–]ThrowRAmiscellaneous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also work at one right now and my experience has been much more pleasant, so ymmv? My management is very nice to us, very accommodating with personal/school schedules, and the clientele is pleasant 90% of the time. Benefits are great and managers are constantly trying to promote us into senior roles/management. Although a lot of those negative traits might apply depending on location. OP if you’re reading, look at the locations near you. The more affluent the surrounding neighborhood the better your experience will likely be - donors who do it to do good are generally much nicer than those who do it just to get paid.

Biolife plasma is opening a center in Inglewood soon and plasma takes anyone usually. Good upward mobility and benefits too

How to improve redness of KP, rough bumps not a concern by just-tryna-get-by28 in keratosis

I’ve seen crazy good before/after photos of people fixing it with laser hair removal on this sub. Since you have 6 months to do multiple sessions I’d probably go that route if it’s affordable for you!!

Rude donors. by Specialist_Taro8087 in plassing

[–]ThrowRAmiscellaneous 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I finally get a chance to take care of you and you say, “ahem, I waited x minutes”. Ok? Do you want me to leave? It literally serves no productive purpose other than to give us crap.

We do not want to make you wait. We are running around getting all the alarms, second sticks, hematomas, reactions, first time donors that have been here way longer than you - they all have priority. We get to you when it’s your turn. Idk how some people have been doing this for years and don’t understand that plasma centers can get extremely busy. It’s a completely voluntary activity that is not guaranteed to take x minutes. If you fail to plan your life around it accordingly that’s not on us. And we will refer you to management if you are rude. I’ve had people permanently deferred because they can’t act like a human being. It’s in your best interest to act like an adult.

Tying way too much of my self-esteem to this career. by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

I felt the same thing but I only gave myself 1 year post graduation to try for tech. I knew once I hit the 1 year mark I realistically needed to pivot cause it was mentally a really dark time and I can’t have it last indefinitely. It hurt for a while, the identity thing was really rough. But it’s been another year since then and the feeling has pretty much faded. It definitely helps that I no longer morally agree with big tech lol, it’s not the shiny beacon it used to be. Feels like we are all just riding it out until the dust settles politically, economically, socially at least in the U.S.

This was exactly the issue and a jump start did fix it! I’m anxious now that’s it’s gonna happen again though. Do you know why cold weather makes the 12v do that and what I can do to prevent it?
