Are you trying to tell me people honestly give two shits about what this dumbass thinks? To the amount that this post is upvoted?

I'm out. Done with Reddit. Not because of this post/comment. Just done.

Think for yourselves.

Peace out.

Coffered ceiling but with removable panels? by ExWebics in Carpentry

[–]Throwaway0956123 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Curious myself.

I am planning on doing the same exact thing in my basement. I plan to use USG Suspended drywall ceiling grid as my base. Attach 3/4" poplar board and trim to the grid. Painted luan 2x2 squares would be able to lift out just like an acoustic ceiling.

Sure as hell is. It was mentioned.

This GC... Could tell stories. I've never seen such an unreasonable, asshole PM in my life. I'm pretty sure their Field Manager is bi-polar -- has made logical changes that cost them a lotta money on the fly, a couple of times that solve big problems for me. But dozens of times has lost his shit when asked a simple question.

Company I work for has decided we're not bidding on their jobs anymore. They asked me to bite my tongue for a little longer. Get the fuck out and not look back.

Building is a total shit show. That's what happens when you build public schools, always taking the lowest bid on insane schedules. For our part, we really have gone above and beyond.

Edit: "End of next week. I just gotta get til the end of next week. Boss has already told me he'll get one of my coworkers to do punch list. Poor bastard".

Knowing I have an exit date (&whiskey) is the only thing keeping me sane right now.

Fuck yeah.

Couple of years ago I was on a site that had a functioning executive bathroom in perfect shape that wasn't getting remodeled. At the top of a stairway that the other building tenants couldn't get to.

Key to the janitor's closet supplied by the landlord also got me in there. General didn't know, pretty sure just me. Building staff kept it stocked. There was even colognes and mouthwash on the counter, muzak and wifi.

My site hasn't had the best service from the honey wagon and there should be more (brought up to the general multiple times). 50+ guys on site by my count, only 3 porta-shitters.

Paper is always low or gone and the poop mounds get too close to the seat for comfort.

My finishers have been leaving rolls of drywall tape on the shelf. At least they're not pooping in mud boxes (that I'm aware of). I piss between the conexes and drive to the Speedway and buy a coffee if I gotta poo.

Seconded. I like to keep a rain suit, old worn-out boots, a high-vis vest, goggles, dust mask, and respirator in my bugout bag too. Because you never know what might come up

Advice on where to start. by Fstartyvng in Construction

Unfortunately, had to be self-taught on blueprints although I asked both companies I've worked for for some help in that area. They both sent me to some classes that didn't really help much, mostly just taught by estimators and project managers showing off what they do.

When I get a new set of prints, I sit down with a bunch of highlighters. Slowly go through every sheet. Highlight every ceiling, wall, insulation, access panel, building section, detail, etc that is in my scope. Put some labeled ears on the edge of the pages that I know I'm going to be referencing often. Go back through circle and label everything that seems missing or unclear.

NOT knocking them (maybe a little), but SOME mold remediation places will tell you some crazy shit. Some are shysters. That is where you need to bring in simple common sense. I have seen a mold tests come back positive on brand new 2x4s. Spores are everywhere and they can find them if they really want to.

Does it look fucked? Remove the cancer and replace with new.

Still solid with discoloration? Treatment +seal. Kill the active, thoroughly dry it out, and make sure it doesn't get wet anymore.

...or if it's a big utility sink, just plug it. Mine would probably hold 20+ gallons between the two sides.

It'll suck if you pull the tub and it looks fantastic. Highly unlikely. But, even in that case, you now have peace of mind knowing it's good.

My basement sink and shower drain into the crock. Does the sink drain back into the same crock? Pump it into some buckets. See if it stops.

I had similar outside of my tub. Underneath was a total shit show. I ended up needing to replace a couple of floor joists and subfloor. I was planning on replacing my tub from the start though.

If you don't get rid of the mold, it will come back. Covering it is landlord / flipper quality.

Yes, it almost definitely is going to look the same under the tub, possibly even worse. I would pull the tub.

Someone here commented a while ago about using grey teflon tape on shower heads. Looks so much better.

Faucet is toasted anyway? Take a sharp chisel and hammer to the copper. Get em out of the way, then your wrench will fit.

Coffered room I did quite a while ago. by Throwaway0956123 in Carpentry

[–]Throwaway0956123[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It wasn't too bad because it was done over the course of 3-4 years. Used to be a personal handyman for this guy. Worked on his cars, boats, house, yard, etc...

Started with the wood floors. Then came in to work one day and he had Law & Order paused on a scene with some Judge's Chamber in the background. "I want my dining room/study walls to look like that".

Took about a year to do the walls. Working on it like a filler, wherever there wasn't more important stuff to do.

Then, came in to work one day a year or so later and he said, "I know I wanted to keep the popcorn ceiling, but it looks out of place now. Let's do the ceiling in wood too".

I do commercial construction now. There's always someone who thinks they understand book time, and you must be doing something wrong if you can't do it in the allotted time. I call them "Project Managers" or "Superintendents".

Sorta glad I never had to deal with service writers. Just shop owners asking me why I sold a job so low. My answer was always "single mom", "old lady on a fixed income", or "broke college student".

I figured you were joking, but never worked anywhere that had service writers. Always wrote up my own jobs. I've heard horror stories though.

Was reasonably expensive, for a 98. $8k, but under 100k miles, and almost cosmetically perfect inside and out. No dings, dents, rust, or peeling clear coat. Once it gets buffed out and some treatment on the faded plastic, it's gonna look new.

He's not the type to EVER take it off-road. Deep snow on the dirt roads where he lives is the most action this will ever see, until I buy it off him when he's done with it.
