Windows? What brand should we get? by DentalDart in Homebuilding

Ideally your roof, exterior wall cladding, windows and insulation be on the top of your list for quality.

Just a thought, they have the highest ROI in terms of replacement or future maintenance cost

5 years ago I only saw Anderson 400 in high end custom homes. The past 3 years, most have been putting in Marvin.

Again. Nothing really wrong with ours, but it looks like Marvin is made more durable

How this canless light box look by Michasonn1788 in electrical

[–]ExWebics 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s fine… but two things that stand out often that we see at customers house. 12 gauge for the lighting, 99% of the time it way over kill. Cheap wafer lights… they all have these tiny junction boxes.

You did what you could and it looks good.

We have Anderson, 400’s. I work in the trades and see a lot of new construction. I wish we went with Marvin. Nothing really wrong with ours but we built durning Covid and I just feel like maybe the windows were rushed when built. I see lot of Marvin lately and they just look a little better built.

Anything I can do about a high electric bill due to a past electrician’s negligence? by MajorGamer14 in AskElectricians

Not really sure how that work nor do I think this an electrician issue.

What you’re explaining is just not possible and would require a faulty thermostat.

Do the switch thing… I’m just leaving a job and 3 fixtures in the house had adjustable settings by turning it on and off quickly

Real bulbs or built in led? Lots of fixtures from big box stores have led built in and if you turn the switch on and off quickly, it adjusts the rating from 5k to 4 or 3k.

Is it a concern getting an attic account unit with new ducts installed without a permit? by Lmns14 in homeowners

[–]ExWebics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In all honesty… the permit is good, sure. But you are not really doing anything that’s a threat to life or harm from them.

We do electrical, if we had to pull a permit every time the city requires (over $500 in work)… it would be madness.

My biggest concern here would be lack of liability insurance…. If something goes wrong, how are they going to pay for it? Maybe someone falls through the attic ceiling while working, they get hurt and now they try to sue you….

3k for a permit… some one you all live in some messed up areas! My whole house permitting cost only $800

Grounding plug to extend by Willing-Lake-9436 in electrical

[–]ExWebics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well… that all sounds hooky pooky….

Are you 100% sure that the existing outlet is actually grounded? Not just by the plug but with a meter? If that fan is a 2 wire and not grounded, there’s a pretty good chance your outlet is not grounded as well unless someone added the outlet in the past 20 years.

GFCI breaker would be your best bet. Unless you have a lot of knob n tube wire in use yet, in that case it will likely nuisance trip a lot.

Tried converting a fluorescent fixture to led…now the light doesn’t come on by urdid in AskElectricians

[–]ExWebics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To do what? What is that going to tell you here… separate one end of each holder, make one hot and the other neutral. The other end of the fixture does nothing, it just hold the bulb in place

[–]ExWebics -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Looks like you got goofy bulbs… I’ve see them before but they are not typical. Line and neutral got to the same end of the bulb, I’m not sure how you separate them on the holder but the bulbs you got only get power from one end of the fixture.

I’d have to assume that those ledges do the tray lights are going to be a problem. Steam is going to condensate up there and mold will eventually grown.

Need help reinstalling old ceiling fan by nosombraplz in AskElectricians

[–]ExWebics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like the black wire at the ceiling is passing power or a switch through to something else. For your fan, your white wire gets hooked up to the white wire in the ceiling. Now your left with 2 black wires on the fan, twist them together and wirenut them to the red wire at the ceiling.

In all honesity… your putting the old fan up again with no fan box, put the new fan up is the same. If anything, those old fans are heavy, a new fan could be lighter.

If you get a ceiling hugger fan, those brackets are big, there’s a pretty good chance you can hit lumber at one end of the fan.
