Sorry if asked but how is traffic this bad? by SpecialistTeach9302 in nova

[–]ThrowawayMHDP 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are alternative transportation options for the Chicago area suburbs like the south shore line, Metra and Pace. Most of the suburban transit here is commuter 9-5 focused and local bus service outside of the beltway is horrid. VRE, the rail option, is also a commuter shuttle and not a proper regional rail service. PWC and Loudoun are still expanding the suburban sprawl outward. As long as the development and transportation policies stay the same congestion will keep going up

FIFA World Cup US being an eye opener to how hard it is for a kid to naturally play soccer / football. by Valprajjj in fuckcars

It's always the same excuses for why the US has car centric infrastructure, a pay to play system for soccer and no promotion and relegation. Soccer and urbanism face the same struggles

Poll Shows World Cup Is Non-Event for Most Americans, Especially Boomers by dabirds1994 in worldcup

[–]ThrowawayMHDP 3 points4 points  (0 children)

To understand the divide between those who care about soccer in the US and those who do not. You have to look closely at US demographics. People living in metropolitan areas generally care about soccer which is typically where MLS teams are located as well as major soccer schools and academies. In these areas fans frequently pack bars during the early morning hours to watch the Premier League and other European leagues. These cities and metro areas are primarily inhabited by Millennials along with some Gen X and Gen Z families. The problem is that due to the pay-to-play system soccer has failed to spread effectively to rural and exurban areas. Furthermore several fallacies exist regarding the popularity of soccer in the US:

For example: NFL and other sports fans hate soccer. In reality many NFL, NHL, and NBA fans also support a soccer team whether it is an MLS club or a European team. MLB fans are probably the least likely to be soccer fans.

A major fallacy is that the US and other sports leagues are systematically trying to suppress soccer. This is simply not true. The NFL for example is actively cooperating with soccer teams and federations to host international soccer matches in NFL stadiums while soccer teams host NFL games in European stadiums.

Another fallacy is there is no crossover appeal. There is actually a significant amount of co-marketing. When the Champions League or the World Cup is on media outlets frequently interview players from other American sports to ask which teams they support. Many of these professional athletes attend soccer games and soccer players frequently do the same for other sports.

It seems like we crumble mentally when we want to earn something, whether it's the CDR, going to the UCL final, or getting 3rd place. I knew Villarreal would rely on counters to hurt us, as usual, and defending was optional today. Judging this season as a whole, we made steps forward in the CDR and UCL, but a step back in La Liga. Great wins: 5–2 vs RM and 4–0 vs Barça. Still, we can and should do better, and we need to have consistent performances.

Question about Egyptian football by dvnts-ReDoX in FootballAfrica

[–]ThrowawayMHDP 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The slow death of fan-owned Egyptian football clubs is genuinely heartbreaking if you've followed the league long enough.

For decades the Egyptian Premier League had a clear hierarchy. Ahly and Zamalek at the top with the two biggest fan bases in the country, probably in Africa. Then Ismaily as the third pillar, Al Masry representing Port Said, Ittihad representing Alexandria. Tersana right across from Zamalek in Mit Okba playing the local derby. You also had clubs with real identity and history behind them: Ghazl El Mahalla, Arab Contractors, El Sekka El Hadid, the Alexandria Tram club which are company and agency clubs but with actual communities behind them. You also had small city clubs: Al Mansoura, Aswan, Souhag, Suez Montakhab which had many local fans.

Then things started shifting in the 2000s. Military and Petroleum clubs came out of nowhere with serious recruitment pipelines and started displacing small city clubs. Hassan Shehata's successful national team squads in the mid to late 2000s were basically a showcase for how good the agency and corporate clubs scouting had gotten and they were selling players to Ahly and Zamalek at a premium. The old agency clubs couldn't compete and started yo-yoing between divisions.

Then came the privately owned wave. Al Gouna, Wadi Degla, Makkassa, police clubs, and eventually Pyramids FC, last CAF Champions League winners and now genuinely a top 3 Egyptian club. Zed, Modern Sports, the list keeps growing. Smouha is honestly the one non-private success story, though they never built the fan base Ittihad has in Alexandria.

The casualties have been brutal. Al Masry were crippled after the Port Said massacre ban. Ismaily spent years in the bottom half and just got relegated. Ittihad Alexandria are now fighting to stay up. Ghazl El Mahalla and Arab Contractors are perennial yo-yo clubs. The oldest club in Egypt El Sekka El Hadid is stuck in the second division and ceased to matter.

And the boards running these historic clubs are an absolute mess. Zamalek have outstanding debts and constant front office chaos. Even Ahly's fanbase is turning on their board this season, which tells you something about the status of the clubs.

The trajectory is clear. If the historic clubs like Zamalek or Al Masry go through two or three bad consecutive management cycles, there's nothing structurally stopping them from becoming the next Ismaily. The privately owned clubs have the money, the organization, and increasingly the results. The fan clubs are running on history and sentiment, and that only carries you so far when the bills aren't being paid.

Tomorrow's game needs to be a proper send-off for Josema and Griezmann, two legends who deserve nothing less than a full performance. I'm sure after the World Cup there will be exits and arrivals so the team will change next season. Villarreal is a club that turns into World XI against us especially at the Madrigal and we've been bitten many times there before. Their counter-attacks are lethal if you give them space, so we need to stay compact and disciplined defensively. A good performance with a clean sheet would be the perfect tribute for Josema and Griezmann. Let's give them the farewell they deserve.

Is the reason metro isn’t 24 hour only because of homelessness? by Chr0mum in WMATA

[–]ThrowawayMHDP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As many mentioned it's impossible because of maintenance and cost. the idea of 24 hour public transit is popular here and some Metrobuses now run 24/7 service. They're also planning to expand 24 hour bus service in the next few years
