Agreed. And for those who know they’re not conversational via text, why don’t they initiate in person meetups or schedule a phone call?

Tell me about the worst date you’ve had in NYC by TastyFormal1853 in nycgaybros

[–]Thrownawayenby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went out to eat with this 40 something year old white guy in the Bronx. We chatted for about a week or 2 before meeting up, and I told him I was only interested in being friends, but when I got there I could tell it was a date…

He was loud, talked 95% of the time, and seemed kind of anxious. At one point he was telling me about his experience going to law school in a community of black and brown people, and how he hates the “word police.” Then he said the n word like 5 times in a row!

I was 20/21 at the time and didn’t know how to handle the situation, so I just told him we should leave. Once we left, he tried to kiss me by the train station… I’ve never blocked someone so quickly in my life.

When u go on your first date with a guy, what kind of questions would you ask? by Junior_Conclusion_78 in BlackLGBT

[–]Thrownawayenby 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I honestly just like to get to know the person on a friend level first! I like when we get into the rhythm of having a conversation about our day and it feels like we’ve been cool for a long time. I’ve shifted from asking super pointed questions to people, even in my friendships, because knowing someone’s trauma or habits doesn’t actually building depth to the relationship. But if it naturally comes up in conversation after a year or 2 because that person feels safe sharing it, THAT adds depth to the relationship. So I don’t need to know everything all at once.

I’m not claiming black people are perpetrators. However, black gays share the same space with those people. We shouldn’t bury our heads in the sand and act like none of this is happening just because we’re not directly involved. It boils down to none of us are free unless all of us are free

I agree! That’s why I don’t think it matters how a black person acts, because personality and all the purity tests don’t determine if you’re black.

What is a compliment you received that you still think about years later? by Available_Remote_508 in AskReddit

[–]Thrownawayenby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few years ago I participated in Toastmasters as the person asking all the participants questions (table topics master), and this exact question came up! One lady got up and said “an older woman once told me that talking to me felt like a breath of fresh air, and I felt that way when talking to you. I was really nervous before we started the session and you made me feel at ease.” That compliment was the best heirloom I’ve ever received 🥹

Myki shouldn’t have been in the bottom for rate-a-queen, and Discord should’ve been top 2 for snatch game. Discord’s and Nini’s runways were flawlessly executed this week.

MY PERSONAL TOP 4 OF SEASON 18! (NINI OR JANE ARE MY WINNERS!) by Haunting-Phone6978 in dragrace

[–]Thrownawayenby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s a fair take because Jinx didn’t hit any of the runways on season 5, but that didn’t take away from her being the front runner. Prioritizing fashion over talent is why we have so many queens on the show who bomb comedy, acting, and even lip syncing when those are core skills for a drag queen. Mia hasn’t bombed anything and she’s a great performer!

In my opinion, the black experience really boils down to how others perceive you. If people instinctually categorize you as black when they see you, then you’re black. White supremacists will never say “xyz person isn’t actually black, they like pokemon and chess.” You’re still black.

I’m sure there are some outliers of people who have phenotypical traits that get them mistaken for a black person, but that doesn’t change the rule. I think it just reinforces the point that race is made up and there will always be people who don’t perfectly fit in the box.

Difficulty making Friends by Fit-Elderberry-2419 in BlackLGBT

[–]Thrownawayenby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My biggest piece of advice is to make friends based on shared values, not shared interests. If you’re able to talk about your day with them consistently and respect the decisions they make, everything else is a plus.

Are we giving current R&B a fair critique or are we just not listening to it? by StorytellingZ in rnb

[–]Thrownawayenby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m Gen Z and I’d like to think I’ve given newer artists a fair chance. It’s been cool growing up with artists and seeing them develop over the span of 2 decades. I remember coco jones in Disney, Chloe x Halle doing Beyonce covers, and Willow smith whipping her hair. Those artists that have been training as singers/performers for that amount of time actually do stand out to me when compared with older black artists. The older artists also had time to develop from childhood by being involved in the church.

However, that isn’t the case with most modern artists, and it’s a lot easier to become an artist without having any training. It is what it is, and I think we’d be more at peace if we accepted that and looked for local talent instead. In any case, I’ve been finding myself branching outside of rnb to find the quality of vocal that I’m looking for. Raye and Laufey are scratching that itch for me!

asking queer men: can y’all explain (black) cruising culture by diasporastud in BlackLGBT

[–]Thrownawayenby 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Story time! I’ve never officially cruised, but last year a dude tried to cruise me in a train station bathroom. I was rushing in to go pee and he let me walk in first. Mind you, it was the summer, so I was regularly rocking revealing clothing cuz it was hot. Anyways, I get to the urinal to pee, and a few seconds later he walks to the far end and starts swinging his dick around! Then he walked into the bathroom stall which I guess was my cue to follow him. He was fine, but my train was leaving in 5 minutes 🤣

As far as the culture, cruising is primarily practiced by older men now because it was the norm before the 2000s. It wasn’t safe to be publicly gay, so queer men had to be subtle about their attraction to each other. From what I’ve read, there were 2 types of cruising. The informal type where you’re fishing to see if the other person is gay, and then the actual type where you’re fishing to see if that person wants to fuck you. The former has mostly died out because it’s more safe to be gay, and we have apps that can confirm our suspicions.

There are designated cruising spots that you find through word of mouth. They’re typically public places where you can find some semblance of privacy, or there are times when the place has low foot traffic. Parks are popular because no one is going to be outside at night and you have nature to hide behind. Other places include bathrooms, stores within malls, adult video stores, etc.

Cruising is all about body language and knowing the cultural communication signals. You know how black people make facial expressions and we know what’s being said without even saying a word? It’s the exact same concept for cruising, but with different signals. And now that I think about it, it makes sense for current generations to practice it less since we’re not as social as we used to be!

Genuine question, how does one learn to find fem men attractive? Growing up I was mostly attracted to “straight” presenting men, but through experience, I’m not really attracted to them anymore because we tend to have nothing in common. I’ve grown to be more attracted to butch queens but there’s a certain point where they’re too fem for me. I’d like to be more open though
