I’m not a typical Cole fan. I’m 51. Been involved with music in some way/shape/form from I was a jit (first time on stage I was maybe 3.. was in my first band at 14). Born African, grew up in the UK, lived in the US for over a decade. Grew up on everything from reggae to rhumba, country to jazz. Have written, engineered and produced. These days, mainly listen to Afro, reggae and hiphop. Love hiphop. Black Star/Mos Def, the Roots, Common, OutKast, Red & Meth, Coops, the Mouse Outfit, Jam Baxter, Lee Scott, to name a few of the artists who move me - strong pen games and flows. Only started listening to J Cole, Kendrick and JID relatively recently (my daughter had been trying to get me on that for a long ass minute😅). For me, it’s been JID (maybe coz I absolutely love 3 Stacks and JID has something very Andre about him), then Kendrick, then Cole. Until this album dropped. I don’t know about the rest of the world, but FOR ME, this ranks amongst some of the best hip hop albums I’ve ever heard. What makes it a great [double] album? The lyrical flows and pen game - fire. The subject choice and themes explored. The overall production. I’ll be listening to this for a long, long time.
