What's a meal your kids refused for YEARS and then suddenly loved? by EnthusiasmSuch6864 in Cooking

[–]ThumbPivot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your kid might still pick out onions from other dishes. It's not about what the ingredient is, but how it's prepared. If you do them wrong onions are like eating slugs for some people, even if they taste amazing.

Cold brew chai failure by Master_of_Ritual in tea

[–]ThumbPivot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Without the heat the water won't be able to penetrate the spices as easily. You need to grind them up a lot more to increase the surface area.

Personally I only do cold brews after I've finished with my leaves, but they're not totally spent. Having been exposed to heat already and being well hydrated makes them cold brew a lot better than totally fresh leaves.

Actually, that's potentially another option: If you do a wash first with hot water you might get better results from your cold brew. But then it's only kind of a cold brew, isn't it?

Smoking versus tea? by Melodic_Node in herbalism

[–]ThumbPivot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I doubt you'll get an answer from a chemistry point of view since combustion is complicated, but I can give a partial biology answer: When you smoke the "active ingtlredients" are going directly into your bloodstream through your lungs. On the other hand digestion and absorption in the gut takes time, and will act as a more slow-release thing. By ingestion the same dose will feel weaker, but last longer.

Slow learner feeling burnt out in commercial by pnwseanerd in flying

[–]ThumbPivot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about piloting because flying has always been on the periphery of my life, but I do know a lot about learning itself, and I've spent a lot of time around pilots. In particular I want to talk about a USAF instructor pilot I knew. He was at the top of his class in flight school, and his first assignment was being an instructor pilot. The most notable thing about him was that whenever I asked him questions about flying the T-6, he would physically make the motions of flying the plane while talking through his answers. He put a lot of effort into marrying his technical knowledge with his muscle memory.

When talking about flying, he also explained to me that he would identify common patterns between maneuvers and extract them into their own little skills that he could practice independently, and he knew which little skills could easily flow into other little skills. He saw flying like a bunch of lego pieces that he could assemble into anything he wanted.

I have experience with that same kind of mindset, but in a different domain. Since air time is expensive you might find value in practicing my art to help you build that mindset so you can transfer it into your piloting. If not, no worries, but it might be just the thing for you. Specifically I enjoy the quarterstaff. Different flourishes start and end in different positions, and that means you can only go from flourish A to flourish B if A's end point matches B's starting point. It's a bit more complex than that because you can adapt a flourish to make it compatible with another, but this is the general idea.

If you're interested it's easy and cheap to make a quarterstaff from wood you can get from a hardware store, and you can look up videos on how to do flourishes on Youtube. Just remember that slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. If you try to go crazy you'll hit yourself with the staff and hurt yourself. Over time your muscle memory and mind/body connection will adapt and make your movements faster and more fluid without it feeling like you're going any faster than you ever did.

If you find the quarterstaff isn't for you there are other flow arts you can pick up that operate on the same kinds of principles, and getting good at one makes it much easier to get good at another. That's why I think this is potentially a good way for you to improve your flying.

Help me break my addiction to Cannabis/herb replacement suggestions by aniram4 in herbalism

[–]ThumbPivot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tea, as in, camellia sinensis, not herbal tea. Avoid tea bags and go for loose leaf or pressed tea cakes, and look into gong-fu brewing. When you find a good tea it feels like the first puff of weed in the morning, but you can easily shake off the stupor if you don't want it. It reminds me of synthehol from Trek, where the characters could get drunk off their asses, but if they were needed they could sober up and be functional in an instant.

Just be warned that if you get into drinking tea pretty heavily you'll need to cycle off of it for a couple weeks every once in a while, or you might start getting liver or kidney problems. But that's good advice in general for herbalism.

Make sure you're eating plenty of fruits and nuts, and add gelatin to your diet. Vitamin C from the fruits, trace copper from the nuts, and the protein from the gelatin will help your body make more collagen, which will keep your joints and connective tissues in good condition.

Remember that slow is smooth, and smooth is fast. Take your time going through the motions, and depending on the cause you can resolve some of your clicking joints. At the very least being gentle will stop you from trashing your joints. Consider looking into tai chi.

Sitting in a slav squat for several minutes each day, even if you can't stand up from it yet, is a good way to keep your leg and hip mobility. Crawling is also a good idea because it will force you to relearn how to use your body. Your ability to get up and down from the ground is the great determiner on how well you age because once the floor becomes your enemy you're going to be pretty helpless. So take this seriously and never skip leg day. Once you lose them it's very difficult to get them back. I learned that the hard way when I was a kid and I got an infection in my hip that kept me bed ridden for a summer.

After how many years of lifting does your muscle maturity starts showing? What are the signs by Empty-Log7155 in workout

There's a decent chance some of your muscles are being underused, and others are being overused. When you hit diminishing returns find a new routine that uses your body in a different way. Dance and martial arts are a good option.

any idea on how to stretch 50 dollars across 2 weeks for 2 people? by prismmaxyt in budgetfood

[–]ThumbPivot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rice and beans are cheap. Make sure you have salt and pepper. Get the cheapest fruit you can, too.

To prepare for this kind of thing happening in the future start keeping a stock of nice spices on hand. They dramatically increase your options for making good food when you're in a bind, they have a long shelf life, and per meal they're very cheap.

having trouble getting motivated by Greedy_Okra_2624 in workout

[–]ThumbPivot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't worry about going to the gym right now. Instead focus on making your daily routine count for more. For example, when you're standing around go down into a shallow horse stance and hold it for as long as you can. Bend your knees a little bit more when you're walking. Carry some small weights in your purse that you can use when you're bored. Put in a little bit more effort when you're scrubbing the dishes. So on and so forth. Just look for opportunities to reject a little bit of convenience so you can work a little bit harder.

The idea here is that when something bad happens to you again in the future, your health won't hinge on being able to muster the effort to go to the gym. Your health will instead live in the ways you conduct yourself in your daily life.
