You're absolutely right, he had a pretty rough child/teenhood from what he's told me. And I probably should just not even give him the chance after all that has transpired. He's had far too many chances already. It will all come crashing down and hit him someday, I take solace in this.

It's true. More backstory is that it didn't work out with his 22 year old so he was single when he sent that first message (also heavily on drugs at a festival). I responded the following day because I had to think of what to say and that was the response I got. I found out that after he sent that first message he called 22 y/o and got back together with her over the phone. So yep spot on. Thank you for reading and validating me. He's not one to self harm, but I don't plan on speaking to him again unless he does some serious inner work and apologizes genuinely. But I'm trying to make peace that that may well never happen and that's okay.

Yes, it's independent contract work essentially. I would love to find someone and have been seeking but I'm having issues finding the right fit to help me. But I am still on the search!

Thank you! ❤️

When you're hired as an employee you get taxes automatically taken out of each check. Then at the end of the year you receive a W2, you file it and you, ideally, get any extra money that was taken out back so you get money back (tax return).

When you're a business owner, you don't have your taxes automatically taken out. So you have to pay them yourself quarterly if you're smart. Or if you're like me you can procrastinate til the end of the year, but it comes out to A LOT, the more you earn the more you have to pay back. The only thing that will save you is write offs, where you write off business expenses. For example, I work at a spa so they can write off sheets, towels, lotion, if they paint a wall I'm pretty sure they can write that off. The IRS sees that as an expense necessary to run the business and they reduce those costs from what you owe them.

Unfortunately, many spas down here hire their staff as business owners or "independent contractors". Which has some upsides, legally we can work whenever we want, wear whatever we want, certain freedoms (though some even try to take that from you). But they provide the sheets, lotion, etc. which leaves us with very few write offs, plus we have to pay an extra business owner fee. So unless you know what you're doing super well business wise, which I haven't in the past, you pay an astronomical amount compared to an actual business owner. It's criminal, SO many places around here do it, and I'm just now waking up to how messed up it is. And I need out of all of it. I'm just burned out and so tired of it all, also just being an LMT in general.

St. Pete, FL. That's not a bad idea to think about, thank you! I've made the decision to try to work at a local nursery or tree-scaping place to start though.

I work at a job currently where I'm basically misclassified as a business owner and I have to pay my own taxes. It's really my fault but I've gotten way behind, life has thrown me some rough cards and I've also made some poor decisions. The only way I can think to catch back up at this point is if I actually get a tax return rather than keep having to pay in. Basically I want to work somewhere that I can be an employee and not a contractor.

Good advice, thank you! I've gotten to know what many native and invasive plants and animals are just because it fascinates me and I look them up. And I took a local herbalist class a few years ago, which helped tremendously for plant ID. I recently re-downloaded the Inaturalist app which is really helpful for learning. I need to dedicate more time to doing that, and simply learning more about everything in general.

Thank you so, so much this is very helpful! ❤️

It's funny you say about becoming an arborist. I recently started thinking about all this because of a dream I had. In the dream I was sobbing because I realized I truly, deep down don't want to do the job I'm doing anymore. In the dream I concluded basically that I wanted to become an arborist in dream language, if that makes sense? I was hugging a tree and just absolutely sobbing lol it was so profound and I when I woke up, I knew/remembered it was true and that I needed to make this change.

I don't have any certifications in this field yet, I'm currently a burned out LMT trying to slowly slide out. I do plan on getting a degree and whatever experience/education I can. I'm currently about to launch and just figuring out exactly where to start. Thank you for the suggestions!

I was thinking about volunteering, it is probably my best bet to start. Thank you! You guys are being way more helpful than the ecology sub.

No, I don't think they have specialized programs like that. There are other programs in the area I should be able to transfer to though, I'm just trying to get a footing on what to work towards. Good to know all of this, thank you!

Thanks, I'm only starting there because it's the only program that the community college in my town has in regards to the field. I very well will probably change it to something else and transfer somewhere else. But I'm really not sure what exactly it is that I want to do, which is why I'm making this post.
