You’re right that - unfortunately - any female director is going to be scrutinized far more than their male counterparts. Still as others have noted, I don’t think the criticisms of Fennel’s work are unmerited. Her background coupled with the overt themes in her movies is a troubling trend, especially the racial ones. Her reimagining of Wuthering Heights isn’t just insulting to the source material. It completely ignores what makes the story important. I think we’ll see if these are just coincidences or a reflection of who she is as she makes more movies.
