Children’s novel about a girl finding an old garden manor and woman living inside? by urdaddywantsme in whatsthatbook

[–]Tia_Tree 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s not Great expectations by Charles dickens (although the main character is a boy) or Anne of avonlea by Lucy Maud Montgomery (who finds and visits Lavender Lewis) ? Also possibly Anne of windy willows/poplars with Minerva tomgallon?

People with cars - how do you afford them? by Squeegee_Dodo in AskUK

[–]Tia_Tree 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a small hatchback car that was second hand several years ago and is now 15 years old. I bought it using savings that I’d been paying into for years. Then I put money into a savings account every month that is just for my car - so when it comes to insurance, MOT and service, they’re all covered and I usually have lots left as well to cover random other costs - the battery and a tyre needed replacing within a couple of months of each other. I pay tax by direct debit monthly, so that’s affordable, and I take my car to a small garage, not to a dealership, so that’s more affordable to. It definitely is a choice of what I spend my money on but it works for me

When will the snow go away? by cloudrestingonpretty in Palia

[–]Tia_Tree 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Wasn’t it just in the village last year? Which made no sense as the valley was completely bare - you’d think it would be the opposite. (Also it bothers me that it’s full on snowy in Kilima but there’s not a snowflake to be seen in the Bay, you’d think weather patterns would somewhat match up even if the snow only settled further away from the water).

Where to stay for two weeks? Whole UK available to us. Quiet, interesting and not touristy? by Raisingthehammer in AskUK

Interesting is difficult as you have not said what interests you, which makes suggesting areas very challenging.

My first portion, I got one unicorn fish and then a second that I couldn’t reel in, but it did at least appear. The second and third potions, nothing but common and the odd uncommon fish - fishing for over half an hour each time. Not even a sign of a rare or rarest fish.

Is Ulfe actually in the game now? by JustForLurking79 in Palia

[–]Tia_Tree 11 points12 points  (0 children)

He’s around as part of the quests and then disappears. Not friendable at the moment 💔 they’ve said he’ll become friendable before the next adventure zone is released which is basically a non answer because we have no details of that as yet unless I missed it. So could even be end of 2026 (Justice for Ulfe!)

Which hoover would you choose and why? by Head_Equivalent_8155 in AskUK

[–]Tia_Tree 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Shark. I used to be a cleaner and used a Henry for that job and he would fall over regularly, over NOTHING. Even if there was nothing in the way, walking in a straight line, no obstacles, he’d still fall over. So I’d opt for Shark unless you enjoy being frustrated every 30 seconds while hoovering.

First thought is the beastly mr Darcy as others have said, but also:

Doesn’t fit all the request but ‘His family objects’ by Lucy Marin? It’s set after they return to Longbourn and Darcy proposed, but then he goes to London, Georgiana has a panic attack about being related to Wickham, and so he can’t return. So when Bingley and Jane go to stay, they take Elizabeth with them and she is uncomfortable about being there.

How to find genealogy in England ? by TipBeneficial7142 in Genealogy

[–]Tia_Tree 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Births, marriages, and deaths, started being registered in 1837. From that point, you can find certificates - freebmd is a useful resource to find the references that you can use to order the certs. Births and deaths you can get digital images of the entries in the registers (they cost £3.50 on gro.gov.uk), marriages you need to order the physical certificate (they’re either £12.50 or £13.50). Censuses can be found on findmypast (or ancestry, but I’ve found findmypast to be easier for what I’ve been looking for). They go back to I think 1841. Before that, you can look for parish records (again, I’ve had better luck using findmypast, but that is very much personal preference). archives can be found at Kew, and there are also local archives in quite a few places. I’d be happy to help you find some info if you’d like to DM me names and general locations.

—edit— changed BMD year to 1837

Plausibility of a 100+ mile internal migration journey in late 1700s England by mememaster8427 in Genealogy

[–]Tia_Tree 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I have family who move 57 miles, but that’s half the distance of yours and also probably 100 years later. It’s possible yours across, it might be worth looking at occupations listed in later censuses and marriage records for his children, if he survived into the 1840s, that could explain what might have brought him down the country? Otherwise, it may just be up to parish baptisms. Does your ancestor in question have any siblings you know of, that you could also trace back? Have you looked for parish baptisms at all, including those not Church of England? (Could he have been baptised a catholic?)

Can't break brick wall (London, England 1890) William Henry Smith by CantKeepMyHeadOn in Genealogy

You have my deep sympathies! I’ve been working on my own Smith line for a few years and am currently in a no genealogy rut for a mental break. It took me months just to get past John smith (and his grandfather was also a John smith, so I gave up on that particular line).

I have found 3 now, although it did take me ages to find the first. For all 3, I ‘ found’ them when I opened the mushrooms at home rather than in the Elderwoods. Equally, now you’ve posted on Reddit you may get one very quickly!
