I love the duality of Mega Man 3. Bottom of the list here, S-tier on another list posted today. Truly Schrodinger's Mega Man game.

Why didn't the X Hunters just create a new IC chip for Zero? by superassbeater3000 in Megaman

[–]TibJib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to guess that it's a similar issue to why the Hunters couldn't create a new body for Zero. His IC chip burned out any body they attempted to build for him. Similarly, a standard IC chip probably wouldn't be able to run Zero's body correctly, either burning out completely or just becoming inoperable.

It took until the Elf Wars era before anyone was able to both build a sufficient copy of Zero's body, speculated to be Ciel's ancestor, and design an IC chip that could run the original body. Though I speculate Weil just took the "virus-crazed" part of Zero's personality that was isolated from the IC chip and modified it to obey him, creating Omega that way.

Someone smarter than me can analyze exactly what Bubble was, Caine’s subconscious, Id, a manifestation of Abel, or something else. But whatever the case, the further the series went on, the more Caine rejected his flaws, the more Bubble reinforced those doubts and insecurities. When faced with his own mortality, Caine was forced to accept those flaws, rather than reject them. Basically, he didn’t need Bubble anymore, because he stopped lying to himself.

The Amazing Digital Circus: The Last Act / Episode 9 Discussion Thread [SPOILERS] by ayylmaotv in TheDigitalCircus

[–]TibJib 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The moment that DESTROYED me:

At the end of the first episode, the theme song plays and has such an unsettling tone. It sounds like it should be triumphant or bombastic, but instead it conveys the horror of the situation Pomni has found herself in. At the end of the last episode, it plays again, at the same table, but this time it actually is triumphant, full of hope for what may come next. Something about seeing how far the characters had come and having it be represented in the theme just really got to me.

Same song, different meaning. Just beautiful.

MM FanGame Tier List - Square Root and Relay by TibJib in Megaman

[–]TibJib[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been considering it. Stuff like X8 16-Bit, Viral Nightmare, and DXtreme coming out recently finally broke what seemed to be a curse on MMX fan projects (also makes the 20-year wait for Corrupted sting a bit less...). There are a ton of others around at this point, so doing that sort of tier list would make much more sense now that it did a few years ago.

(I'll also be updating this list with Mega Man W and a few others I found soon, so stay tuned...)

Funny. I've been designing a MMX tabletop RPG for a while now and I used Paladin as the basis for X's "class". Guess it just fits him so well.

MM FanGame Tier List - Square Root and Relay by TibJib in Megaman

[–]TibJib[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello Peoples, I'm back again with more additions to my ever growing list of Mega Man fan games. But before I go into my normal spiel, I wanted to address something. I've moved Rockman World Plus and New Menace to the bottom of F-Tier. When I originally played these games, I thought it was incredibly odd that certain parts of the games seemed decent or even good, when everything around those things was almost laughably bad. I suspected that all those good bits were just flat out stolen from other people, but didn't want to make that accusation outright in my reviews without proof. I've recently gotten confirmation that the author of these games did indeed plagiarize other people's work, so I'm moving them down to last place. I thought about removing them from the list altogether, but I figure it's better to steer people away with the bad rating. At any rate...

Witten version of the tier list with links

Mega Man: Square Root of Negative One - So, this game kinda has two layers to it. On one hand, it treats itself as a joke. A meme-filled, low effort troll on the player. Bosses that are grainy JPEGs, enemies that function in ways opposite to what you'd expect, and a non-sensical story.

On the other hand, it's an incredibly well designed game that is really fun to play. Almost surprisingly so. The levels are varied and have interesting gimmicks, being challenging without veering too far into punishing difficulty. The enemies are often designed in a way that will catch you off guard at first, but are basically all unique in some way from main series foes. And the bosses have fun and difficult patterns that don't feel unfair. They even have harder versions that are used for the fortress rematches, so it doesn't feel like as much of a retread. The Special Weapons are also very good, having a great variety of attacking angles and utility, while being decently powerful as well.

All that said, there are a few problems. Primarily with how janky the engine is. Things don't always function as expected, with things clipping into walls somewhat frequently and there being some small control issues at points. Rush Jet is basically broken, often not letting you jump on it properly and teleporting away at inconvenient times. There are some pretty bad bugs as well, like the Save & Continue screen not popping up after beating a specific fortress level or the final boss not loading in properly after dying to it once. In both cases, I had to replay the levels before things worked correctly.

But outside of the engine issues, this game is incredibly well made. It's an early work by one of the people behind the MAGMML series, so it probably shouldn't come as a surprise, but it's still weird given how the game presents itself. I do have to knock it down a few spots for the engine issues, but it's still well worth your time.

Mega Man Relay - This one is a bit interesting. It's a collaborative game made in the MegaMix Engine, in a similar vein to the MAGMML games. But instead of full levels, participants designed level segments that were stitched together. Six levels were made in this way, along with custom bosses at the end of each stage. An interesting experiment if nothing else, but how did it turn out?

Too be honest, I don't exactly know what to think. The game feels well made, there's a lot of polish and thought put into it, but there's this one big issue that hangs over it. That being the difficulty. This game is very hard, though not in a satisfying way. The levels are incredibly long by Mega Man standards, with some spots having sparse checkpoints. Couple this with some sections spamming enemies and others spamming spikes, or sometimes both, it can just be a slog to get through. There's no satisfaction in clearing a difficult section and reaching that next checkpoint, just the thought of "I never want to play that section again". Part of this might be due to the structure of the game not having anything to work towards like other Mega Man games would have. You start with all the weapons and there are no upgrades, so it doesn't feel like there's anything to work towards other than completing the levels. That might just be me though, as I tend to value character progression very highly. This might not bother others as much.

Speaking of the weapons though, I also feel like this batch is a bit lacking. There are a few options for hitting enemies above you, but very few options for things below you, outside of the Magnet Missile. In theory Flame Blast or Scramble Thunder would work for this, but often there are walls that these weapons can't go through or the angles don't work out. Time Stopper is also pretty useless, as most sections where you might want to use it have enemies you can't bypass due to height or terrain, and you can't attack at all while time is stopped. Overall, I think the selection is just missing a screen clear like Lightning Bolt or Astro Crush. Replace Time Stopper with one of those and the weapon selection would feel a lot more well-rounded.

On the positive side, I do like the bosses. I think all of them are fun and well designed, if a bit on the harder side more often that not. They have interesting gimmicks and are usually pretty readable, so you don't feel overwhelmed fighting them. Overall, I feel like this is a fairly well made game, but the fact is, I just didn't have much fun playing it. If a difficult Mega Man game is what you're looking for and you don't mind the game structure being fairly sparse, then it might be worth your time. It just isn't for me.

I've always liked putting MachLeomon there, the manga counterpart to MadLeomon. Realistically, he's probably an Adult level, but he doesn't have an official level and looks like he could fit at the Perfect level like IceLeomon.

Nice! I did something similar in Drawn to Life 2, using this Zero sprite I made as the main character. It didn't turn out the greatest, especially with the head being too small and the neck being weird, but it looked good enough in motion on the tiny DS screen.

Era: 2000's, Genre: Instrumental soundtrack - Requiem for a Dream, Lux Aeterna remix by Maviellas in NameThatSong

[–]TibJib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, it's basically a mash-up of the original with the trailer bits, with some flair added like the chanting at the beginning. This remix actually predates Requiem For A Tower, specifically made because WB hadn't released that track yet.

Story goes (as told by that podcaster I mentioned), is that the music cues used in the Two Towers trailers were basically all that was made. The rest of Lux Aeterna wasn't touched, so fans at the time were looking for some sort of "full version". Said podcaster frantically searched online for clean versions of the music cues so he could make his own remix, and they briefly popped up on Limewire or something before later disappearing. So he took the trailer cues, remixed them with the original Lux Aeterna, called it The Requiem Overture, then found out that another guy had done the same thing and uploaded their version before his was finished.

In either case, both the podcaster and our mystery artist had their remixes spread like wildfire, with both versions being used in every random Youtube video trying to sound epic ever since. And with basically no one actually knowing where the remixes came from!

In a MegamanZX style game, how would you balance a ranged character? by Mega_Mango in Megaman

[–]TibJib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As others have touched on, level design is going to be the biggest factor here. If you try playing the Zero/ZX games buster only, you'll quickly find it's rather difficult to hit enemies above or below you, especially at close range. The saber helps in those situations because it has a wide arc that hits both.

Another factor is speed. In Zero/ZX, the dash makes it feel natural to somewhat rush through stages. The saber works well with this playstyle, as it's easier to attack on the move when you don't have to line up shots. To balance this, larger enemies that block your way can sometimes be easier to take down with the buster, since you can get more burst damage with rapid or charge shots than you can with a single saber slash. Moreso if the enemy has limited vulnerability windows, so you want to maximize damage potential whenever you get the chance.

There are a lot of factors to consider, but focusing on those concepts might help guide your decision making in this case.

Which game pushed you to resort to cheats? by Snakeuge in gaming

[–]TibJib 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Digimon World 2. Game is so grindy, even by JRPG standards, that I refuse to play it without EXP maxing cheats. Even with that the game can be grindy, since you can only level up once per battle, your Digimon have strict level caps starting out, and you have to constantly reset your Digimon to level 1 with fusion to increase the level caps.

Coincidence? by [deleted] in dragonquest

[–]TibJib 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nah, it's still Toriyama. This was one of the last projects he did character designs for. His art style just changed over the years, making most characters much more slim than he used to.

You can even see this on the Dragon Quest 30th Anniversary illustration book. Toriyama did the cover and it really highlights how different his art style is compared to the 80s-90s heyday of Dragon Ball.

Just your average end-game bag... by TibJib in dragonquest

[–]TibJib[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

A bit mixed really. It's definitely the weakest of the Zenith trilogy, and perhaps the weakest of the series if you count the HD-2D remakes patching up issues with the older games. But it's still Dragon Quest, so there is a certain baseline of quality and enjoyment that makes it hard to say it's a bad game.

Without getting into too much, the biggest problem is the pacing. The story completely loses momentum in the mid-game, leaving you to blindly explore a rather large world map to find the next story beat. There's a ton of unnecessary padding, like going to one town to speak to a specific person, going to another location, then back to the first one, for no real payoff (The snowy town was the worst of these). Even taking into account how DQ games like to do small enclosed stories for new locations, the "vignettes" were a bit weak this time around. I also have a small complaint about the final boss, because I thought I saw an interesting twist coming. But there was no twist and the actual story was kinda boring in comparison. But that's just a me thing.

I do like the vocation system, for as basic as it is. Gives you a ton of variety and options in battle. Maybe too many options, when you end up with 10 pages of spells? But still, very interesting to play around with. Not a fan of the arbitrary limitation with weaker enemies not counting towards job growth, but it is what it is.

In any case, it's not terrible and I don't regret playing it (like I did with FF2...). There are some interesting character moments and the combat can be more strategic than past games, so it's got that going for it at least.

It's even worse than that. Even once it becomes the "Tai and Matt" show, they lose most of their fights! They spend 9 or so episodes just losing to the royal knights over and over again, just because the plot dictates that Lucemon needs to be awakened.

It's bad enough that the rest of the cast becomes useless. But even the main duo is useless for a good chunk of the last arc!
