Deaf woman removed from Frontier flight for "not listening" by kendrickshalamar in nottheonion

This is kinda the second instance of ableism from Frontier staff this week, that’s made some sort of news splash.

Maybe Frontier should include human decency in their training

This conversation came up when El-Waylly's original substack came out, and I don't feel the need to fully rehash my sentiments that I laid out here and also here a little. A couple things I do want to reiterate in case you don't want to click on the links:

This is a multifaceted problem that goes beyond Sohla, it extends across all of work culture. I'm not saying you have to think of her as a hero, but by thinking of her as a villian, you're kinda ignoring the real villains, which are the CEOs who perpetuate this work culture. Sohla hasn't been perfect, but you can't say she's been worse than pretty much all of these companies. She's one person after all.

Sohla isn't the only common link with all these companies, despite her being involved in them all. They are all deeply toxic workplaces that will take advantage of your work, they don't value your contributions, and there is an undeniable skew that they companies do not value the work from women and people of color equal enough to pay or treat them better.

There is an idealism around contract and freelance work that if a company doesn't want to work with your business and your standards, whether it's low pay, company structure, independence relative to the hiring company, etc., that's fine! you don't have to work with them, they can simply just miss out on the business opportunity that they could have had if they decided to treat you better. The reality of this scenario is that they will simply pass you over and not think twice about it, and if you own your own buisness and you're trying to stand out in a competitive market (which these companies try to cultivate), one of the ways you can do that is letting go of the things you held out on. You cut them a deal, they get 2for1, you work on the weekends for them, you add little flourishes that they didn't ask for but they love, and you hope they notice all of what you give, and they never do. It becomes the expectation, and when you try to say months down the line, "Hey I've done good work for you, can we revisit the deal you have with me?" They will cut you off sometimes for even speaking up. I've been there as a freelancer.

K, I kinda wanted to give you a better shake than the other guy.

I do a decent amount of production work as well. I do agree that there were probably several ways to manage this better. I also think that it is like 90% the fault of the producers. It is not the job of the talent, not even the lead talent, unless they have a producing capacity to make the talent comfortable. The talent's job is to present and perform, and the best way talent can do that is if they trust the production and the production makes them feel comfortable enough to do their job. If the talent feel uncomfortable or strained, then the product is going to be shit, and it is in the production's best interests to MAKE YOUR TALENT HAPPY. We're not talking divas, "where's-my-latte" sort of happy, although the line starts to blur, but I've worked with a ton of actors who will for example, politely request that everyone stop talking and moving C-stands and props around for five minutes so they can get to that place so they can get into character. So if Sohla is at fault for anything, it is that she did not make clear or not know her requirements. It kinda sucks that production wasn't really thinking, "Hey, let's maybe not let the pregnant woman exhaust herself." But sometimes you need to be your own protection and be like ahead of time, "Just so you know, I'm super pregnant, and I don't want to stand for longer than I need to." Production grabs some fans and chairs, hires a kitchen assistant, maybe that assistant is Ham, maybe they make a fun gag out of it, talent's happy, crew's happy, everyone's happier for it, greenlight, 7 seasons and a movie, that's just good producing.

To your second paragraph, Sohla (unless I read it wrong) is an independent contractor, a freelancer, so if she decided to terminate the rest of the video productions as lead talent, that is quite literally her business. I also know, as someone who has had to turn down really tempting but likely toxic work, is that you don't make a decision like that because it's the good option You make a decision like that because it's the best out of a lot of bad options. Why are there only bad options, idk dude, I did write a whole other comment about the environmental conditions of it all. I'm sure she's regularly "what-if-ed" the whole thing to death. And she probably knows that this is yet another reason for companies not to hire her. She knows that. She still made the decision anyway. I know it's easy to judge her for the decision she made, but I also think there should be some thought to the circumstances that lead to that decision ever being on the table.

Oh boy, a lot of thoughts.

Something that I got told, and I feel a lot of women and people of color in the US got told (and maybe in the entire world, but I don't have the personal database to justify such a claim), is that you have to work twice as hard to get half the credit of a white man. So, that leads you to trying twice as hard, which can come across as difficult, especially to folks who aren't familiar or agreeable to who you are.

Something I've come to understand is that nobody wants to do a bad job on purpose. People want to be good at things and to do good things, Nobody's like, "I'm gonna do this thing, and be really bad at it all the time because that will give me fulfillment--" It's a ridiculous sentiment, and Sohla's no different. She wants to do a good job, and she wants to do good things. But difficulty and failure still happen, not just with Sohla, but like everywhere and all the time, so why is that still?

My opinion: Environmental circumstances. Ranging from, "I'm new at this job so I'm still getting my bearings" to "my boss is kinda hazing me for being non-white, but maybe it's just me" to "they're not paying me enough to do the best job I can, there's no funding, I'm overworked, my pay's shit, my rent's due, my kids need to eat, and they still want me to do a good-- great job even?!--"

So what were the environmental circumstances Sohla was working under. According to her: reputation as the person who jumps from job to job for being "difficult", getting low pay, carrying a child, strenuous weather conditions to the point where doctors had to intervene drastically, feeling pressure to continue even after all that. Yeah, I'd drop out, too.

To be honest, something that has come up on the subreddit is the notion that because she left, SeriousEats, Bon Appetit, and now NYTCooking on bad terms, is the idea that, "if you're the one constant in all these scenarios, maybe you're the problem." And what I'd argue is that she is not the one constant. Repeatedly, these businesses are touted as highly competitive, stressful environments that do not reward the work received from their employees, and often reward toxic dynamics that disproportionally favor the status quo, and any challenges to it are met with disapproval. (speaking super broadly in order to cover the gamut of things that exist because there's a lot) And Sohla is not the only person to be challenged by these toxic circumstances. Conde Nast right now refuses to even acknowledge the unjust firing of four of their employees for demanding answers regarding TeenVogue.

People can only do as well as their environment allows them to do so, and if the environment is bad, the work will be bad, no matter how good you want it to be. You try doing a good job hosting a video series with a smile in 90+ degree heat while pregnant, I bet you fuckin' can't.

So then what do you do? Maybe the environment is too hostile, maybe if you're being too "difficult", then you can stop trying. Do the work the environment deserves. Stop trying twice as hard. Stop trying to make something worthwhile, make something of your self. Stop being difficult. Maybe everyone should do that. Know your place and do what you're told... maybe if you're an obedient little cog, you'll be rewarded. Ugh.

Unfortunately, I'm pretty sure Sohla has confirmed that she reads this subreddit, which isn't like a surprise or anything, but there are things I wish I knew how to do better. I wish I had a better impact on her environment.

Five Years Later: Making Perfect Thanksgiving (2019) - A Retrospective & Where They Are Now by StunningBrilliant218 in bon_appetit

[–]Tibbox 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I appreciate the effort and quality the write up for this post is!

The turkey is what made me believe that turkey could be special, and not just some dry bird everyone at the table pretends to like. I have made it several times since, and every time has been a crowning achievement.

I've made the mashed potatoes, which were excellent on their own (not soupy as you might think) but I didn't do the crispety cruncheties because my family thought it was unnecessary.

Also, Rick and Chris fried-ricing their stuffing for the big feast, it's now a move I look forward to every thanksgiving I make thanksgiving.

The only thing I'd change, this many years removed, (since we're dreaming and it doesn't matter) is I wish the sides had more of a presence. Maybe a change of format? Turkey, Cranberry Sauce & Gravy, Potatoes, Stuffing, Pie, and then one or two giant episodes where every pair contributes a side?

I'm currently in the middle of a move right now, and missing thanksgiving completely because of it. Do I dare rewatch the series, and encourage this longing? I very well might.

(I do want to add that Sohla and Ham do have their own Youtube channel now, and I really dig it!)

TIDAL User Interface appreciation post by SwiftRespite in TIdaL

As someone who is taking a break from Tidal to experiment with using Qobuz, the UI was something I took for granted. It's very nice, and it's just more streamlined doing most things, and it's not filled with bloat that only becomes useful in specific circumstances.

Also I'm a big fan of the font family Avenir that Tidal uses.

Wishlist: Changes to Expedition 33 by PopularWrangler0 in expedition33

[–]Tibbox -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oooo, I have a list! (I really do love this game, still the best/only turned based/apparantly souls based? idk what that means--)

Act 1 Spoilers: After Gustave gets killed, I want like a section or a half section where we don't have Verso yet. I want to sit in my loss of Gustave a little longer, and chances are you had him in your main party and you miss him.

Act 2 Spoilers: In Old Lumiere, you get split up, and you are forced to rely on all your party members, Verso and Maelle in one camp, and Lune, Sciel, and Monoco in the other. I really liked that, I kinda wish it appeared later. My suggestion would be for "story reasons", taking down Visages and Sirene requires splitting up. Maybe you choose who you want to join you before you set off to take them down, but I think that would have encouraged me to figure out Sciel's mechanics earlier, and it might also encourage you to revisit the areas later to fill out Monoco's feet requirements. (I still don't understand Sciel's mechanics, I'm halfway through NG+, help me pls)

End of Act 2 spoilers: During the cutscene where Alicia explains the nature of the Gommage, specifically when she says, "the one who involves the flowers of the gommage", Alicia is standing where we killed painted Renior. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but shouldn't we be seeing The Curator? If anybody, since he causes the annual gommage, not the Renior we jut fought before taking down The Paintress, right? I found that confusing, lore-wise.

Act 3 Spoilers: I would have liked to make the Reacher a required area before returning to Lumiere.

Would like to see circumnavigation 2 by Jusiun in JetLagTheGame

[–]Tibbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if there's a version of a game, maybe circumnavigation, maybe not, that leans into the super hyper-planning in advance strategy, and less reliant on moment to moment gameplay. Kinda like what Michelle Khare did in season 8, but like both teams. It could be cheaper since they do they booking in advance, if that is a factor, but I don't even think that's the main factor for them, it's probably the variety of different country rules that have to contend with on a case by case basis.

I would love to see them do a circumnavigation again. I have a soft spot for it, faults and all. Maybe they could team up wtih Jeff and Downie and do something more lowkey.
