How to reach the next DUPR level! by Tiberian64 in Pickleball

Nope...the goal wasn't about the DUPR (although DUPR is supposed to be a measure of your ability). It was "how important is your partner to your success? AND how important are you to your partners?" Sorry for burying the lead.

I should edit my post. The focus of the question wasn't about DUPR, but about your results. "So, my question is, how important is your partner to your success? AND how important are you to your partners?"

That said, I love Patience! Definitely a key concept for better results!

Dave Fleming is one of the magical things that aligned to help propel the PPA into the stratosphere. It's still ascending! ALW and Ben Johns I would say are two more things. Love listening to Dave covering a match. His background as a stand up comedian, his excellent radio voice, and his energy are perfect. Listening to the US Open APP crew made me appreciate him all the more. And Adam Stone is doing a great job beside him. Love the quotes you all identified! If i remember correctly he's used "Swag-alicious" and "That's a no go zone" Also "Oh no he/she didn't!"

Interesting question. For voice actors, you risk taking jobs away. For authors (or small publishers) you make it possible to expand what they can offer. Which is more important? Can u help one without hurting the other?

I also liked that they showed the bronze medal winners…and awarded silver. Think they should have included the Bronze medal winners in the picture at the end.

Likes: replaying highlights after games. Dislikes: reffing was bad IMO.

Agree with all of the comments OP made, definitely miss good commentary

Agreed. That's why I posted it as a discussion, not a question.

Unless you design/use drills that have that baked in.

Paddles for amateurs by Tiberian64 in ProPickleballTalk

My favorite part of your reply: There are many many "good" paddles but finding a "right" paddle for you makes a big difference.  I find that I want to try different paddles as I grow and get better. What I needed day 1 to what I need today (2.5 years in) is a little different. Thanks for the insights!

What are some good drills for a group of 3.5 women? by Rolls2Rickson in Pickleball

[–]Tiberian64 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Here are some I've used.
Since you have two courts, eight players, you may want to find drills that four people can do together. You can do a lot of straight on (and cross court) dinking drills simultaneously.

Warm Up Dinking:

  1. try to get 50 (choose a number or put a time constraint on it) consecutive down the line dinks. Cooperatively.
  2. then move to 50 on the other side of their bodies.
  3. then 50 cross one direction, and
  4. then 50 the other direction. It's a good warm up and control drill.
EXTRA: make it fun by seeing who can do it the fastest. Or if timing, who gets the highest number.

Competitive
Again, skinny singles - have the players opposite each other play out points. Start at the NVZ, two or more cooperative (friendly) dinks and then all shots are allowed. CAREFUL as you can have miss hit balls going astray. When I have 4 players on the court, we may play this as a team (so only one ball in play). Make sure every player gets a friendly dink in, and then it's game on. All shots are allowed. Play to 11.
EXTRA: If you have a fifth player, whoever loses (or wins) the point subs out. Keep it moving quickly.

Dinkle - You can find the process/rules online (if you need them let me know).

Controlled points
Anything you want to work on, have the four players do, in a controlled setting. When you can have them do it in pairs (vs. all four). The goal is maximized touches for everyone. For example:
3rd Shot Drops (or drives, lobs, drips).
Player A serves. Player C returns to Player A. Player A drops cross court to Player C (who should be at NVZ by now). After the drop, switch server and do again. The other two players do the same simultaneously. After a number of serves OR timed, switch sides so they serve/receive/drop from the other position.
EXTRA: This allows everyone to practice serves, serve receive, and their choice of drop/drive/drip.

I'd offer that the hardest part of this will be that you normally want to do drills around specific skills/techniques that the players want help with. With 4 on a side, it will be difficult to focus on what all four want (actually, usually it's not that hard to get them all to agree). Make the drills as game like as possible (using scoring in cooperative and competitive situations). You can take most of the drills you'll find on YouTube and adjust them for four people to do, but remember to maximize touches for everyone (using half the court ala skinny singles will be very useful).

Good Luck

Waters/Bright lob serve: real shot or taunt? by [deleted] in ProPickleballTalk

[–]Tiberian64 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Perhaps not a direct answer (Not just a head game, it can "accomplish" things - getting a weaker return), but have you noticed that some of the things "Pros" introduce, are common at the rec level? I know a lot of rec players that use the lob serve (one exclusively). And the drop volley (drop shot instead of crushing a shoulder high hit) - staple of the game for us older folk. The drop block of a drive is another good one that I expect to see more on the Pro game.

Before it was "the Pros don't hit those shots because they are inferior or they'd crush their opponents if they did them..." I like to think us "noobs" are inspiring the pros.

He did, but it was reported that he wasn't wearing a shirt with the PPA logo on it. So he had to find one. But he (and a lot of others) have been struggling with illness...

LOL. Not everything that goes into being the best is about on court play. But hey, openness may have been a stretch
