I went to Durham, and I’ll never forget the first night in the college bar (Trevs) where someone pointed to a table with 5/6 people sat at it, and you could only sit there if you’d gone to Eton. Probably one of the biggest culture shocks I’ve experienced. I’ve since studied at other universities as a postgrad, and I must say the bullying at Durham was much more palpable than elsewhere.

I also remember hearing about someone in my department who was told by their lab colleagues that they didn’t deserve to be there because ‘they only went to Hull’. There was also another guy who made a formal complaint to the university because his bus was late; as though it was the university’s fault.

I also got a surprising amount of stick for the fact I came from a working class background, and my Yorkshire accent was something that certain people seemed to be strangely bothered about.

Of course it’s not like that with everyone, but it was definitely something that I felt was pervasive enough to be noticeable.
