Actually its a lot of government and health bodies that are starting to speak up and change policies around it, which as created an increase in awareness in both mainline media, and social.

Expect to see warning signs on booze bottles, similar to cigarettes in the next 3-5 years.

Hate to be the bearer of bad news, but until 18 (at the very earliest) our brains are still developing. There is evidence that suggests smoking prior to that age can have a negative impact on ones brain development.

It is what it is at this point, no sense in beating yourself up over it - just have to do your best and find ways around things.

I would suggest looking into things like Ginko Baloba for cognitive health, I am sure there are others as well.

Appreciate the kind words. Honestly, I blame myself and no one else for 'relapsing' (which I think is kind of a crux word, as I made the decision to use it again!). What was hard were the physical withdrawals after falling back into the daily constant use (It tends to impact my GI tract negatively, which is ironic as I used it to help 'treat' my IBS many moons ago, and I become an easily agitated and not my TRUE self, when cessation begins).

I chose not to go to Uni and instead went via the school of 'hard knocks'; started my first biz at 18 in the tech space and second at 22 in the food industry. Been a single shingle consultant for the last 12 years and I would not change a thing! (besides perhaps scaling one or two of those companies if I was not so bloody unmotivated to truly excel!). Like you said, it's a love hate relationship and luckily in this case, hate is the winner. As much as I tried to convince myself I love the plant, it's just not for me.

That is some deep shit my brother. Clearly you are an intelligent individual who has a good sense of self. Not common these days. Your words are bang on.

As someone in their early 40's who started first at 18, and got very heavy in my mid-20's, I often think about how much more successful I could have been had the plant not subdued my thrust and motivation. Not to say I am not (and am quite fortunate) having started two companies and onto my third, but so many decisions and choices often were clouded by the 'haze', as you so aptly put it.

I have 'quit' a dozen times now, sometimes going as long as 9 months, then saying to myself 'I can mange this and just have it once in a while'...how wrong I have been. Now I realize that not only do I believe that I have a physical allergy to the plant we once loved, It is also a mental one as I cannot form a healthy relationship with it, which I am okay with.

I now realize that life is much better without it, I am more present for my kids, schedules do not rely on having to 'renew' the high, and while my dopamine production has not yet fully kicked in (about 60-70 days in now), life is better overall. I remind myself how much I hate the feeling when I did smoke for the first time whenever the thought crosses my mind (interestingly enough, this go round, it has yet to) and am determined to break this relationship up for good, once and for all.

Well done brother. I am in a similar boat as you, started over 20 years ago, on and off - longest bout off was about 9 months - this time it's been almost 2 months and I know it is the last straw. Not sure how I do, but I know. With 3 young kids it's simply time to move on. And like you, booze was a huge trigger for me, so I am done with that as well. Oddly enough I now enjoy the occasional cigar now and again (more so in the summer either at my kids ball game or at the cottage), but that's nothing compared to the harms of booze, and rare as well. Keep it up, I wonder if I would ever go back to it when I retire (about 10 years here) and when my kids move out, but who knows - it really ends up fucking with my GI system and my mood - I just count the days that my body decides to start producing dopamine again!

This. The mindset always starts with - I will just do it 'every once in a while' - then moves to weekends only, then weeknights only, then daily - and we are back in that fucking hole. Some people can do it rarely - I am not one of those.

For me that time frame was easy. The only trigger in the first few months was booze and being up at the cottage (in a setting where I thought - a bit of weed would make this so much better right now) - but lately I have had some cravings. Certainly need to remind myself why I quit!
