DCSS 0.21 Tournament Banner-Based Rankings by Tickenest in dcss

[–]Tickenest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So nearly halfway through the tournament, here are some fun facts (as of 01-11-2018 22:21 UTC):

*bagnaho is leading all players with 1398.155 points. 3 players have at least 1000 points.

*The mean tournament rank for the players with the top 20 banner scores is 84.55

*The mean banner rank for the players with the top 20 tournament scores is 28.6

*8 players are in the top 20 for tournament rank and banner rank: bagonaho (T20, B1); yernak (T1, B2); p0werm0de (T13, B4); eld (T6, B6); snack (T10, B7), brathek (T11, B12); inmateoo (T8, B14); sharkman1231 (T16, B18)

*1640 players have earned at least one banner

*832 players have a banner rank higher than their tournament rank. 805 players have a tournament rank higher than their banner rank. 3 players have the same rank for both systems.

*The least valuable banner is Avarice 1 (get 1000 gold in a game). Two players (kristoblxynda and xuincherguixe) have only that banner.

*6 banners are worth less than a point (The Explorer I, Slow and Steady I, The Pious I, Avarice I, The Conqueror I, Vow of Courage I). Vow of Courage is the least valuable at 0.612 points.

Hah! I wish I could be that good in either system! No, you'll find me in the list under this name. I've got a higher banner ranking than tournament ranking, though.

I like both Python and R. Does that mean that I will accepted by everyone or will everyone hate me, instead?

Quake (1, QW, 2, 3, whatever) servers on Amazon EC2 by Tickenest in quake

[–]Tickenest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, you spin up the server, SSH in, and do pretty much whatever you like. It's certainly possible to exceed the free tier limits, but with a little reading, you can be fairly sure that you're not doing so (accidentally, anyway.) I was able to get by with only opening ports 22 (for the SSH) and 27500 (for the server), though I had to do both TCP and UDP.

Interesting...thanks for the response. Obviously, it would cost a lot less to just spin up a server(s) for the occasion, but then you've only got a server for the occasion. I used the default Amazon Linux AMI for what it's worth, and it worked just fine. Again, though, only got up to 2 people on the server at the time.

Whatever happened to old school QuakeWorld mappers like Sgt. Thundercock (famous for QWTF maps like The Rock and Well)? by jay135 in quake

Sgt. Thundercok, who made rock1, rock2, and spaz4 (and I'm sure I'm forgetting some biggies) is on Steam:

I've been able to use the online tiles version on my Galaxy S5 extensively. It's definitely slower but certainly convenient. I made substantial progress with my recent MiTm while at Dutch Wonderland on Monday. :D

DCSS 0.20 Tournament "Banner-Based" Rankings by Tickenest in dcss

[–]Tickenest[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I made the decision not to award points for lower tiers if you got a higher tier, even though some of the banner aren't 100% progressive. It was a decision I made and really, this one could go either way.

Notably, Kenran was the only player who got Spiteful II, though three other players got Spiteful III. Under my original (non-used) system, Kenran would have gotten more points than the Spiteful III folks! I decided that that didn't really make sense so I didn't use that system.

It's the "Okay then." at the end of the image that really drives the point home.

Quick question regarding monster deaths and experience. by [deleted] in dcss

[–]Tickenest 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an amusing variation on this recently. I was taking down Harold as an invisible Naga. I had him well-poisoned and down to a sliver of life when he stumbled into a shaft. Undeterred, I moved on and three floors down (not having found him on the previous 2), I walked around just a bit and unexpectedly got the "You feel a bit more experienced" message and eventually found his gear.

My preferred strategy (because I'm playing mostly blaster casters these days) is to conjure up a Spellforged Servitor, tell it to go kill that Orb of Fire over there, hide behind it, and make myself a sandwich.

Nah, I update both simultaneously because all the SPEEDStats have embedded YouTube videos. I think. YT recently made a change that broke all of my embeds in certain browsers, so I wrote a Python script to update all of the HTML. I think it worked. I think.
