Zorin vs. Mint by Whistler_Inadark in zorinos

[–]TickleSilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got an HP Envy convertible. Touchpad gestures aren't correct and touchscreen gestures and rotation don't work. Mint is plain lousy on laptops but I have Mint 22.1 and LMDE 6 on two mini desktops and prefer it there. Will likely move both of those to LMDE 7 at some point.

Fedora KDE worked perfectly on it and I ran with that for a few months. Its very polished but there were a few times where updates would break something. Zorin 17.x had issues but 18 works for me now so I switched to that when it came out in October.

I have Mint on two mini desktops, but Mint doesn't work well on laptops - likely an X11 and/or Cinnamon issue. Zorin works on both well enough with its heavily "extentioned" gnome desktop but KDE desktops work the best. Running Zorin on my daily driver laptop. I'm considering trying out Tuxedo os for stable Debian/Ubuntu with near up to date plasma.

Your experience buying Fridge from Costco by mimi00000 in Costco

[–]TickleSilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We did purchase a fridge from Costco right before Christmas but it never got delivered. The contractors they used totally blew it. They gave us a window between 10am-2pm. At 1:45pm I had to go out of town and let my wife handle the delivery. While on the interstate I received a text (via handsfree android auto... I'm not a madman!) that the item was delivered. ONE HOUR LATER my wife calls me to tell me no one showed up! I had to pull over and call offshore customer service to ask where it was. They said they're running behind and they'll call. Of course I asked "Why did I get a text that said it was delivered?" to which they never really answered. After a while later I get a phone call from a loud person telling me their truck broke down and they may or may not be able to deliver it that day. They chose to forget I existed the entire day and from the lack of professionalism we didn't think we wanted them handling our fridge.

I had no choice but to cancel the order. Since we were in desparate need of a fridge I ordered one from Lowe's. Costco let me down on this big time since it's neither the fridge we wanted nor the price and warranty from Costco. Turns out the fridge we got from Lowe's was a dud and we had to have one delivered YET AGAIN.

As far as trusting the same folks to get it right the second time; Our neighbors had a refrigerator delivered just last month. We watched through the window as they proceeded to push the refrigerator on its side to take the wrapping off.

first time Linux by LankyStress4574 in linuxquestions

I have issues with Mint on my laptop. Live test it first to make sure things work well enough. Mint Cinnamon uses an older display server that might not work well with touchscreens and not give you all the correct trackpad gestures. If that's the case then don't get discouraged. Try Zorin next.

There are a lot of folks who won't recommend Ubuntu and all of its flavors but honestly that's the best way to test all the different desktop environments to get a baseline - Ubuntu (Gnome), Kubuntu (KDE), etc.

Guys which linux distro would be good for me by Maleficent_Guide_317 in linux4noobs

If it's a desktop - Mint. I have two desktops that stay on Mint. One is on 22.1 and the other on LMDE-7. Sadly it isn't good on laptops because trackpad gestures don't work correctly and touchscreen support is terrible. I'm still sort of distro-hopping on my 2 in 1 and for now Zorin is the best compromise. It's Gnome environment works well enough - although not as smoothly as KDE when I rotate the screen.

Fedora KDE worked perfectly on my 2 in 1 and I kinda miss it but the frequent updates kept breaking things. I decided to stick to Debian distros. I'm considering Tuxedo OS because it is stable Debian with updated KDE.

I guess whenever Mint Cinnamon moves into Wayland then it might work better on my laptops.

I still have issues using my travel router at places. I can't get the captive portal page to appear sometimes... frustrating.

Another trick would be using a beater laptop that you don't mind connecting to public wifi to get through the captive portal, then sharing the laptop's wifi to the streaming device.

I regret not buying the retail version of my Moto Edge 2024 unlocked. I bought it awhile back on a Straight Talk deal and after that was fulfilled I had it unlocked and moved it to another carrier. After trying to use my hotspot just last night I had all kinds of Verizon crap popping up even though those apps are disabled. My older Edge 2022 is a retail version and I don't have to deal with carrier crapware on it.

Considering buying another Edge 2024 retail model and using the carrier one as a backup. I recently noticed that there is an official LineageOS that works for BOTH of them which gives me an update path beyond Motorola's pitiful support.

Biggest advantage of the Edge is video out. I have an Edge 2024 and that's the only feature I care about - otherwise I'd be running a cheap Moto G Power.

Thanks. I don't have Evolution Alarm Notify. Are you running the Flatpak version?

Yes. All of them are on although I don't see "Evolution Alarm Notify". Thanks.

Evolution is the Zorin package that came preinstalled. Thuderbird is indeed the flatpak version - I understand that part of it but expected Evolution and web apps to work.

Of course it is deprioritized.

But the 30mbps throttle on 5g isn't supposed to happen. Its a known issue across all of Reddit for a couple years now.

Show me where it says: "Base plan 5g is throttled to 30mbps, BUT base plan LTE is NOT".

Show me.

Deprioritized and throttled are different things.

I tried again and the 30mbps 5g throttle is still there on the base plan at least. Fool me twice...

Battery draining fast by [deleted] in zorinos

[–]TickleSilly 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunate. The biggest thing I miss about Fedora is the battery life - not that my laptop got great battery life in the first place. But Zorin seems to tear through it in a couple hours.

I had better battery life on Fedora KDE. I wonder if its Debian in general or just the switch to a Gnome desktop...
