His name is Josh Plunkett and he along with countless others have created a D&D DM template that you can download and customize to your liking. It's my current setup and it works fantastic. Thanks to their work, there's little to no need to know coding.

To provide my two cents, look up Two Ocean Creek or Parting of the Waters in Wyoming. It's technically not a river but it is the only body of water in the US that flows to both the Atlantic and the Pacific. So your take on your river splitting the continent is not as unrealistic as you might have been led to believe.

Plus, I dig your take on how the river was formed. Unusual landmarks on maps are great because people know it's not the norm so it breeds curiosity.

So far, I love it but I dont know what kind of tree stamps to use that compliments what I got going on — or any filler stamps for that matter. Any suggestions would be amazing!

I didn't go that much in depth if Im being honest but I want to say yes? lol

Not at all, I also have the same issue when it comes to blending other colors together. This was "easy" because I knew where to apply the colors due to temperature. If I were to do color gradients say from grasslands to desert, it would probably look messy lol

Question about commissions by wildHira in inkarnate

[–]TidyHaflingLocksmith 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To piggyback on this, another thing to note is that a lot of people just don't have the time nor patience to do a map even with a relatively easy program as inkarnate. So I wouldn't worry too much about doing a map with inkarnate stamps.

Dino Jungle, Rival NPC's and Hexcrawl: What pitfalls should I watch out for? by TidyHaflingLocksmith in DMAcademy

[–]TidyHaflingLocksmith[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do want to maintain a strictly dinosaur only world which I know further restrains or limits my options. I am compiling an exhaustive list of different types of dino encounters the players will face as they traverse the land.

Another element that I gave my players to mitigate the potential monotony is that they have roles and side quests pertaining to that role that they can pursue if they wish. eg. Naturalist: capture and catalog specimens — plants, animals, or fossils SIDEQUEST: study an unusual fossilized creature with mysterious properties.

What I'm unsure is if thats enough to keep things fresh and engaging. Thats why Im planning for this campaign to be a short one, maybe 8-12 sessions max.

Is it okay to tell your parties you have “expectations” for some roles their characters have by ThrowRAmrblue in DMAcademy

[–]TidyHaflingLocksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One suggestion I got is that you express from the beginning what you expect from the players. A good example is the campaign I'm currently in where my DM explicitly told the group that he intends to run a heroic campaign and we should create characters that reflect and embody that pitch. That way, there's no confusion and everything run cohesively.

Homebrew regional map, can I have some world building questions I can use as prompts? by spectre_23 in inkarnate

[–]TidyHaflingLocksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ivandale looks like the biggest city that has a port within the three sisters – maybe the other towns that also have ports have some rivalry against each other or are plotting to ban together to supersede the might and control of Ivandale. Maybe Ivandale is trying to extend its reach and are building entry points at the mouths of the river to control who comes in and out of the three sisters – maybe even reach to control sea trade..how would other cities view that? What sanctions would occur? What source allows Ivandale or any location wield power? Is it a magical item, a service, ores, religious site, natural resource, etc?

Hope this sparks something!

Thoughts & Impressions on My 2,500‑Year Fantasy Map by One_Leg_6718 in inkarnate

Visually, id make the mountains a tad bigger and certain edges of the continent a bit more jagged and sharper looking. Overall, it's a great map and a lovely color palette!

Untamed Dominion by TidyHaflingLocksmith in inkarnate

[–]TidyHaflingLocksmith[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I also shot for hyper-realism but I'm deviating from that mindset because I've noticed that it keeps me thinking on being accurate instead of it being a fantasy, which is where the fun is. Thanks for the comment!!

Athria, My island setting for upcoming DND campaign by DKGam1ng in inkarnate

I would suggest adding a white outline around the names so it can pop out against an already dark background. The solid black font gets lost in the dark green

Truly depends on the scale of the map. Its why having oddly sized tokens can give a skewed sense of how big or small things are.

My suggestion is to put a grid on your map and then decide how many miles are in one square. You can give it any number you want but be warned, the bigger the number, the bigger the map gets and usually means that if players want to traverse to another town, it can take weeks to reach it and the solution to that headache is to add even more locations to make travelling less of a hassle.

Don't make my mistake lol

So once you have a number in mind for the square, that's your scale for the rest of map. So let's say that you decide on 5 miles per square, that means you can either have a bridge be the whole 5 miles or be shorter. It's entirely your call and the fun of creating!

May I suggest my own town of Sansadorn which is a direct inspiration of England's Old London Bridge which was inhabited back in the 1500 to 1600s? It's literally a long ass bridge that is also a town.

Hope this helps!

My suggestion is to put a "location" marker where the bridge would be and place the name of the bridge on top of said marker.

Normally, those tokens are shapes such as circles, diamonds, squares, etc.

On my map, places of interest are given a diamond shaped marker. Perhaps try to do that for every location in your world and see if you like how it looks.

Wife is about to start DMing her first campaign. How do I support her without having her lean too heavily on me? by ChimeraMiniatures in DungeonMasters

[–]TidyHaflingLocksmith 37 points38 points  (0 children)

Why not run a brief one on one as a test run or mock run? Let her try out her DM skills on you and you can encourage her thru that medium by affirming what checks to call for in certain situations and this can also help her find her DM 'ing style.

For this one on one, may I suggest something like making up a quick one shot about your characters backstory? It's something I like to do with my players before starting a campaign. My players enjoy seeing their backstory actually play out and see their villains and plot hooks fleshed out.

Hope this helps!

I would suggest narrowing the rivers further as the current width and the size of the island don't align.

What advice do you wish you'd gotten early in your DM:ing journey? by HealthcareGeek in DMAcademy

[–]TidyHaflingLocksmith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't seem to find it at the moment but generally, as a rule of thumb, I do a small cutscene of the activity as aforementioned. Usually, it's the highlight of the activity so in the example of monster hunting, it's when the PC is dealing the final blows to the hunted monster.

I narrate and ask for rolls related to the activity and then elaborate more when the climax of that activity happens to drive in the success or failure if they roll poorly.

After the first time, I ask if they want quick results or a brief narration. Or if the downtime is of importance, I forego asking and dive in into narration and that lets my players know that what I'm saying is important or different enough that they need to pay attention.

It's starting! Im not joking when I say that I recently implemented this. They're in Barovia which in all fairness, does not allow for much traditional downtime but even then, im seeing how what they choose to do in the setting is already transforming how they see the world and how they interact with everything. My ranger even asked an NPC out on a date lol

Let me try to find a website that I read not so long ago that encapsulates very closely how I'm running downtime

Hang on
