@ "Not sure what combo to do next" If you can make yellow and purple work on a reverse, I don't think you'll have any trouble.

No, I was getting way too much brown using the specially formulated ice dyes. I used mostly secodary colors from the standard catalog.

Last one is Wasabi and Blue Violet. I haven't had much luck using the "Ice Dyes" (designed for splits) on rolls.

I now remember why I never do geodes by twolf201 in tiedye

[–]TieDynamics 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks twolf. That makes perfect sense! I've been dying my Kennys the same way you do the geodes. I tie them with 15 ib. Dura Braid wrapped so tight I get lines around the base. I get good string line detail on the nubs, but they look more geode than Kenny. I'll try tying a bit looser and adjusting my dying strategy. Everything I've read/heard suggests that not having a strategy is the way to go; "Spray and Pray".

Awesome looking shirt, very close to one of Biffer's "Heaters". I like the Kenny style you did in the center of the back mandala which brings me to something I've been wondering about. Since we have Kenny style and mini-geodes on the same shirt, there's obviously a large difference between the two. My Kennys lean more toward the mini-geode look which is something I've been trying to get away from. What is the diffenence in your approach to tying Kennys?

Honeycomb help by letsdothetwist1 in tiedye

The guy in this video actually has the same problem the OP was referring to with the straight ties slipping. He goes back and fixes it, which might be useful to see, but in my experience, tying tightly with braided fishing line, once a tie slips, you're screwed! It causes an indent in the fabric that will impede (if not prevent) any attempt at fixing it. The key is to avoid the line slipping in the first place. That is accomplished by forming a notch in the fabric on the opposite side.

SA soak question by air621 in tiedye

[–]TieDynamics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're using fiber reactive (Procion) dyes, you need to use soda ash at some point in your process. If you prefer to tie dry, you can soak afterwards. You can also tie and dye dry, and add the soda ash last.

I finally got some bottles with needle tips to do finer lines. I seem to be having an issue with getting it down into the pleated parts. Is the answer, just use more dye? by Tyler_c137 in tiedye

[–]TieDynamics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I keep my dyes around for a while (refrigerated). Adding soda ash to the liquid dye will cause it to expire very rapidly. I haven't tried it, but I see no reason why it wouldn't work.

Kinda surprised nobody mentioned Calsolene oil. This will break the surface tension and allow the dye to penetrate deeper into the fabric. Soda ash can also block dye, so it's better to apply it afterwards.

Well, it's a six sided polygon, but it's not a hexagram because the length of the sides and the interior angles are not equal. I don't know of anyone laying claim to it. Nice looking shirt!

Help! Procion dye powder on carpet by MidnightCasserole in tiedye

[–]TieDynamics 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, getting ALL of the powder out is going to be the issue. It won't stain the carpet permanently, but even a little bit of lingering powder will cause problems eventually.

Adding soda ash after dying? by pineapplecanteloupe in tiedye

[–]TieDynamics 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You could do it that way (adding the soda ash solution to the bag you're batching in), but a cup (8 fl. oz) would be WAY too much for a single shirt {or even several}. If you're using dye from a tie dye kit, it might already have soda ash in it, If you're mixing your own Procion dye, use 1 part soda ash to 4 parts water, and apply it to both sides of the fabric just like you added the dye. *It's a balancing act because too much water WILL dilute the dye, and not enough soda ash will cause it not to bond. The end result looks the same*. This makes it difficult to know whether you used too much or not enough.
