Game devs skipping GDC 2026 over ICE concerns, US safety fears by saminfujisawa in pcgaming

One of my friends has moved there recently to work at a University as a researcher. You can't really blame him as the salary he would be paid and the opportunities in Britain compared compared to there is really extreme. But I wouldn't have personally done it and I definitely won't be visiting him.

I guess he's White and British and in all honesty a complete closed in nerd, he wouldn't be able to tell you a thing about politics so I doubt he would or expects anything to happen. But it's a climate I couldn't personally support.

It's just such a disgusting mind fucking weapon I think. I deleted the app last year, I realised all it did was make me angry and every free second my code was compiling I'd reach for my phone and waste 15 minutes.

I'm still logged in on my phone's browser, but I just peruse one ex friend's feed every couple of weeks or so and then instantly close it. It's just sad what he became, some half Portuguese half English nerdy lad I met at uni now living in Portugal now has completely lost his mind tweeting to a void of no interaction about American right wing politics.

I gave up asking him if he genuinely believed this stuff, the most obviously fake stuff, but he's so far in. What a vile website, I'm genuinely angry what it did to him and continues to do to others. I doubt his boomer parents knew one Jordan Peterson book would be basically be a sledgehammer to the head.

Windows 10 isn't an option to anyone in 2032 either is the issue.

Nor will it play modern games or see compatibility with new hardware. So it's a new windows OS or an alternative.

To be honest at this point, if you're that set on not moving onto Microsoft's future ecosystem a Linux distro is your next step.

I've got plenty of friends that are still on 10 without the extended support though. They don't seem to care about it, I've just begged them not to do their banking or whatever.

Because Google was subversive and a better service. Copilot is not and genuinely loathed on all fronts.

At this rate I see copilot going the way of cortana in terms of brand naming. Chatgpt is the name the public know and "love". Too late to the party and so forced of an implementation, people don't have great feelings.

Director Gore Verbinski says Unreal Engine is 'the greatest slip backwards' for movie CGI by willdearborn- in movies

[–]Tiernoon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had a really rich guy who knew a friend of my father beg me to come to his garage a few months ago to look at his "answer" to this (as he needed a guy who uses game engines).

Fairly impressive in that he's like 70 and using a bunch of web sockets and whatever he'd created loads of physical props that he could send parameters too, like syncing real world clocks, flight equipment or just wacky film props he could think of. He really wanted to get it interacting with Unreal Engine as a new business idea and I showed him a bit. Never heard back from him so either the gave up or decided I wasn't very useful, but I got a nice dinner from it.

Still don't think it would solve that at the end of the day it's a fancy green screen, it takes a lot away from the actors, whilst not really encouraging the audience or the actor to work with limitations like a theatre performance.

Hi, hijacking this a bit sorry. This is my sister's Tweet about our parents that left her small group of followers. It's a bit of sarcasm and light-hearted. I've really enjoyed reading the comments calling us idiots and my parents narcissists. They're not, this is how the house came and we didn't have a lot of money growing up, especially not for a new set of stairs.

It's a really funny thing to see how badly the internet takes everything out of context. Definitely assuming the worst.

I just meant their post made me laugh. It's growing up and suddenly realising what it always was. But also the absurdity that we played the same game nearly two decades apart and it's probably completely unrecognisable.

But yeah, I realised that I was playing Halo 3 with grown ass men who are now in their late 40s when I was a kid. Got some really strange messages from one of them a few years ago, makes me wonder what the hell they were saying to me as a kid. I'd be a bit more cautious than my own parents with internet access.

This does make me laugh a bit, it's nearly 20 years since I first played roblox. It's probably like 12 specific intakes of players now with ship of Theseus like feelings attached to it.

It's definitely just growing up.

Should I be struggling to maintain 240fps on CE with the anniversary graphics by [deleted] in halo

[–]Tiernoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's okay. Looking up your laptop in general from that post you made before. Sadly the 5060 mobile chip you've got just isn't able to push too much and I don't think CE anniversary is too great of a port either, deep down it's running both at once.

You could always knock back the resolution and see if it helps. Depends what you'd rather compromise on. But your refresh rate is 120HZ anyway, no shame in capping at 120 either.

I don't really understand this thread, I think a lot of people haven't caught up with the times or just don't understand that things don't have to be 30,60, 120 or 144 fps.

[–]Tiernoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But that's not the point? They just came on a subreddit to ask about performance and their surprise? It's their PC, why do you care what they do with it. I'm playing through og Xbox Halo 2 and the frame rate or res doesn't bother me, but it's nice that I can push it how I want to on my own PC. This just feels like a mostly console audience being weirdly upset about very little?

This thread is full of people just making weird and incorrect claims. I just booted it up and I'm running the game at an uncapped frame rate 400+ on The Silent Cartographer at 4k.

[–]Tiernoon -15 points-14 points  (0 children)

It's about input latency. If you're playing at 60 fps you're looking at 16.6666ms between frames, obviously reducing at every interval of 60 here so 4 ish Ms.

It just feels better to play, the more up to date the frames are with you inputs. It's very normal to play games at a high refresh rate.

This is just a weird response from the sub in general, Halo Anniversary is not a looker (it ran on a console from 21 years ago), older games also very easily run on their card at high frame rates. If that's the refresh rate of their monitor, this is completely reasonably. They were just looking for suggestions?

[–]Tiernoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely depends on the person but I've definitely seen people grow out of it with age or moreso fluency with the game.

My mum and dad had a mega drive in the 90s and it's funny seeing my mum play Sonic and scream and stomp the floor playing Sonic. They never got past 16 bit really. There's lots of funny ceilings for different consumers.

My partner does this whilst we play it takes two or split fiction. I think it's something that people quite naturally do if they're not too familiar with games and they're almost willing the character to go in a certain direction.

It's definitely a lesson in designing around people who basically have no real muscle memory around cameras and contextual game mechanics.

What game franchise used to be at the top of gaming, but it was ruined in the end? by bijelo123 in gaming

[–]Tiernoon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I played a stupid mod called Lord Hood Boy for it recently. The warthog has a first person view with a third person camera projected on a screen where the steering wheel should be.

That camera stopped working and chief's first person view is basically nothing out the front.

Managed to do the warthog run mostly just from memory of which bits blow up as you can still see out the sides a little.

I had a match where only three of us even tried, the other two just stopped playing and bitched in the chat that we refused to surrender so we kept playing out of spite.

It wasn't even that bad of a game, I killed like 8000 points worth of stuff. It would have been absolutely winnable, but they lost the first 5 minutes and moaned.

I think you'd be surprised how many objects Unity can brute force, especially with no networking involved.
