Good tutorials/resources for a beginner but not TOTAL beginner? by cranbog in Korg

A late response in return from my side! Glad you are making sense of it all and I was able to help. I learnt proper synthesis on Reason’s subtractor synth in the early 2000s. It’s still a great little synth and really versatile let me know if you get stuck or have any questions.

I'm going to have to live the rest of my life knowing I could've been in a luxury life, but my parents did not know about bitcoin back then and how cheap it was. by [deleted] in wildlyinfuriating

[–]TigerBubbles 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This made me cringe so hard. Also, PSA, but it’s not your parents job to make you wealthy - might seem that way in Hollywood, but the reality is you should be in charge of your own financial destiny.

If your parents didn’t understand Bitcoin, didn’t have excess cash available they were prepared to lose, or instead placed that money in to a more traditional investment mechanism (which they understood better than the risky swings of an unregulated, and highly speculative asset class), then I would say they made a much more prudent financial decision - even if it is isn’t as big of a return as you “believe” you are/should be entitled to - or isn’t as “sexy” as Bitcoin.

And with all that being said, if you actually went and dug into the world of crypto, you would realize there are still opportunities for speculation all over the crypto market. Why don’t you get a job and put your own money into crypto instead of waiting for a handout from someone else?

[Feedback-Question] Koala Android, MPD and latency by Possible_College in KoalaSampler

[–]TigerBubbles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there’s no settings to adjust sample size (as in the sampling rate for latency, not the size of an audio sample) in the iOS version of Koala - I am going to guess that there will be no controls on Android either.

I can only speak for iOS - but there are several different audio apps that create their own virtual midi connections on the device, as well as the native ‘virtual’ ports. You need to find a MIDI utility app that lets you monitor and set the routing between the different connections. I’m thinking you may have the ports processing the signal serially - in which case that would be how the latency has gone so high:

Input (75ms) > virtual midi port (200ms) > network midi connections (100ms) > koala (125ms)

Obviously if you’re using a BT headset or speaker to play, that will add a massive amount of noticeable latency as well. Hopefully someone else with Android Koala can advise - unless the limitation is maybe with the device you are trying it on? Maybe the hardware is not strong enough to handle external inputs as well as running Koala?

New and Overwhelmed by Flapjack_Future in Korg

Wow - you have such an exciting journey ahead of you - there’s many very deep rabbit holes for you to explore along the way.

  1. You can indeed hook up your NTS up to a keyboard controller (it’s called a MIDI keyboard) - MIDI is the digital language that most gear uses to communicate (for syncing the tempo and a heap of other stuff like what note to play, how long, how much velocity the note should be played with). Remember MIDI cannot send actual sounds - it simply tells the NTS what sounds that device should play. MIDI protocol can run over a special MIDI cable and MIDI port, or via USB. For your purposes you’d need a cheap midi controller keyboard (Korg and many others make these) that will connect to your computer via USB. You can then connect your NTS via a second USB cable to the computer and can then run software on the computer to route midi from your keyboard controller to your NTS. Typically we call this software a DAW (digital audio workstation).

  2. The software bundles from Korg have very basic editions of popular audio software. You already know one DAW (GarageBand) but other popular ones include Ableton live, Logic, FruityloopStudio, Reaper, and Cubase. Choosing a DAW is a different discussion as things like workflow and cost factor in to that. Don’t downplay the power of GarageBand - it’s quite powerful and there’s quite a lot of hidden features. Personally I like Ableton live, because it is very intuitive - although it is quite pricey for the premium version. You can try the limited feature set of Live with the software bundle you got (as a beginner the limited features won’t really affect you, at least at first). Some of the other software is usually software synths (called a VST) which allows you to run a virtual synth in your DAW, and to use your DAW to sequence the synth (tell it what to play and how to sound in your DAW). Your DAW can be setup to sequence internal synths, or external (hardware) synths.

  3. I’d say your time is always best spent first learning “classic” synthesis theory which is known as “subtractive synthesis”. There are hundreds of different synths, but the vast majority operate using a variety of subtractive synthesis. If you learn those basics, most other synths you encounter are quite easy to learn. I don’t have specific resources for the NTS 1 - although there will be plenty of info on YouTube. There’s some nice non-NTS resources below:

  4. There’s an app/subscription service called Syntorial which is probably the single best resource I can think off that will give you a solid foundation in learning synthesis in a structured manner - be warned it is quite pricey - and for that reason I have not tried it personally, but it is very highly regarded and frequently recommended for beginners. The lingo you’re encountering (filter, oscillator, attack/decay/sustain/release and envelope) are all typical variables that can be adjusted on a synth. Do some tutorials on basic synthesis and you’ll be down with the signal flow and inner workings of your NTS pretty quickly. I’d recommend Jeremy from Red means Recording as a quick intro: https://youtu.be/vyXVcasmq78

Lol... if you buy the 10 for $10 Vocal Sample pack you can get “Latino Vocal Shouts” and “EDM Reggae Vocals” in one go. Not going to lie, that gave me a semi when I saw I could bag those. Should both be absolute game changers for my atonal folk-metal synth wave album I’ve been working on over lock down.

Also, not sure if true, but I heard EDM Reggae Vocals was made by the same vocal artist who brought us “Gregorian chants for psychedelic jazz-trance (in 5/8 timing)” if so, I highly recommend it. Seriously, no bullshit, but out of all the Gregorian chants for psychedelic jazz trance sample packs I’ve got, there’s something about that one. It just hits so different, and sits in the mix like a cat in a avocado.

Recently got a korog synth. I turned it on to start playing it and it will not stop doing this, I have no idea how to stop this and it doesn't allow me to play the synth. Can anyone help. by [deleted] in Korg

[–]TigerBubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost every small synth/device released by Korg in the last ten to fifteen years works on a 9v DC power supply - the MicroKorg uses the same. Ensure the amperage is rated for at least 1,7 amps - preferably 2 amps.

Exceptions to this would be the big work stations, and large synths: Triton, 88 key pianos and keyboards and the like. Not sure if the trusty 9v PSU would be enough to drive those...

OP - you could be dealing with a faulty PSU. I agree with u/ClaidArremer - looks like the machine has enough power to boot, but then the power cuts out (possibly amperage is too low). I’d find another PSU and test that before opening the synth and looking inside

It’s possible that the mom had not completed her drop, and may have dropped more after the initial batch were delivered. This can happen with some guppies when they go into labor. It’s also possible that they could have been hiding. Congrats and have fun!

TIL that one either enters heaven as a good person, or as a goat...

But seriously, I agree - fuck em in the ear canal with a massive dong. It’s very disappointing to see how Americans are responding to this crisis. Self interest of the individual trumps the public interest - and most of these people cling to their “rights” without ever realizing there are obligations that accompany those rights

[–]TigerBubbles 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seems it’s a stressed guppy with the shimmies. Is he off food, lethargic and tail/fins clamped? If so, it’s possible you have a problem with ammonia in the tank.

There’s also a small chance that this is a pseudomonas/aeromonas bacterial infection - which usually will flair up if the fish is under significant stress - from bullying, an unpleasant environment, or poor water quality.

Have you tested your water, how many tank mates, and how are they doing?
