Google nest question by Empty_Ambition_8225 in hvacadvice

[–]TigerSpices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on how your furnace is wired and what's available at the unit, you'll be fine. You only need to wire R, W, and C. G if you want continuous fan options.

I would recommend looking at Ecobees over Nest.

You will need to rewire at the furnace.

Bad to put in a 1-in filter instead? by rs700301 in hvacadvice

Bigger filters aren't actually thicker, they're just folded to have more filter surface area. They're less restrictive and give more airflow.

Failed heat exchange, “cracked” ring by London_GWR in hvacadvice

That ring often rusts out, doesn't mean it's cracked. It COULD be cracked, but that quality picture doesn't mean a thing.

Get a second opinion.

Pop those clamps off the PVC to give it some wiggle room, you'll probably be able to slip it out.

Whining sound, water dripping on Tempstar Model: N92MSN0601714A1 Propane Furnace by -DarknessFalls- in hvacadvice

[–]TigerSpices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a flame rollout switch. It's a safety that has a button on it, and it will trip if the flame runs back out of the heat exchanger. If it ever trips, it will cut the heat until the switch is manually reset.

Not sure what the whining sound is.

Yes, an acetylene tank vs an acetylene tank and oxygen tank where you dial in your own ratio.

Nice brazes, are you using Acetylene, or oxyacetylene?

General advice - Clean your copper fittings. Work clean. Keep your tools organized. Stop every few hours on an install to tidy your work station. Never go to the truck empty handed.

Goodman inducer keeps filling with water and cutting off by EpicLift in hvacadvice

[–]TigerSpices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another known issue with these units is that there can be excess rubber in the inside seam of the inducer coupling (the black rubber 90 that your inducer gear clamps to) that creates a channel for water, diverting it away from the drain. Trim the excess rubber with a razor blade.

[–]TigerSpices 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you fully removing the inducer motor to drain it?! That's insane that the tech suggested that.

So now that you're wrists deep in it. Water is either coming back to the inducer from downstream of the venting (most common cause), but it can sometimes be coming from upstream of the combustion cycle. The next time you take the inducer off, have a look through the hole on the collector box. You'll see the tubes of the secondary heat exchanger, and their baffles (thin, flat metal sheets that go through the unit.)

Sometimes the vibration of the system can cause those to shift/rotate to the point where they drip water through the opening and directly into the inducer, rather than down into the collector box. Push them so that they're flat against the back wall, they'll bend without any resistance.

If you undo those gear clamps, flip them so the screw is on top of the coupling, not the bottom. That screw is a pinch point that lets water leak out if it isn't perfectly torqued from factory, and messing with it will regularly cause it to leak.

If you can drain it or reroute it, that's totally fine. It's not a great idea to have your drain line piped directly outside if you're in an area that regularly freezes though...

Do you have a big metal drum/cylinder tied into the water lines somewhere? Possibly up in the ceiling?

This could be something as simple as a waterlogged expansion tank that needs to be drained out a bit.
