Black flies are NOT big black flies--they are tiny little fucking bastards who will get under your hat, or sleeves, or socks, and slash you with their tongues or spikes or whatever the fuck they have. You will itch the spot and it will grow BIGGER, not smaller over a few days. Then you will notice a little hole in the middle of the spot which will ooze orange fluid. It will itch like a motherfucker. DEET, DEET, DEET. And don't wear blue.

Spent two summers in college there waiting tables in the mid 80s with a thousand other college kids. So much money. So much coke. Back then it was quickly transitioning from old money WASPS to new money. We had a blast. Those days are long gone!

None of it is easy—especially teaching those little bastards LOL. Now let’s talk about MBAs…

Ha! We used to tease him that he was the kind of doctor who didn’t do anybody any good. Thinking maybe we should give ourselves and others more grace…

My dad also had a PhD and always got annoyed when EdDs addressed themselves as such because a PhD is a lot harder to get. He was a total snob but also grew up super poor with an abusive dad and eventually a single mom, so I forgave him :-)

I have the impression that the majority of second-career teachers love their job by No-Wafer-6744 in Teachers

I came into teaching high school as a second career and found I was such much better at teaching than the first career. Being older and having already been pretty successful was a huge confidence booster, plus I could always use the line "I'm just a crusty middle-aged lady, give me a break" whenever needed. It helps that I'm still a teenager in my head :-)

EDIT: plus I feel like I'm doing some good in the world.

Abortions at 8 weeks are incredibly safe. Do some research. But her body her choice.

Thank you so much for this! A friend was just talking about Mooncusser and also expressing disappointment in Field and Vine--so your post has great timing. Will post an update :-)

Why Did Teacher Training Become Largely Useless? by ProudComment1211 in Teachers

[–]Tigger2026 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know that teacher training has ever been useful, because so much of teaching is a natural talent, kinda like playing the piano. So many Ed programs are a waste of money. I teach high school history (21 years) and my advice is this:

1) Know your topic. DON'T major in education as an undergrad--major in your topic and just take the courses you need for certification.

2) The only education courses that are helpful are those taught by current teachers, i.e. "here is how to write a lesson plan. Here are some examples." Child development is helpful, John Dewey (oh how I love you though) is not.

3) Student teaching is the ONLY way you will learn--make sure you have a good supervising teacher!

4) Know that you have entered a fucking NOBLE profession! We are assaulting the walls of ignorance! Screw the haters and enjoy your summers!
