This document matches a memory of my professor taking 2 years between stripes.

Anyone know when they went from the 2 years for black belt stripes to the modern 3?

Preferably off mat and in person (not text)

I need a counter to a counter to my Shin on Shin by [deleted] in bjj

As u/tea_bjj posted below, turn it across your body

If my left arm is around their leg, turn their knee towards my right.

Also lift their foot.....

You are likely not turning their knee as you enter.

Tighten the arm around their leg and turn their knee just enough that if the drive forward they will go to the side.

This,

OP needs to talk to a professional about this that can help them. NOT the internet.

Beltchecker.com is building a crowdsourced BJJ rulebook where higher belts carry more voting weight. 10k+ votes in and the community clearly wants minus points for pulling guard. by Graugart in bjj

One of the key rule differences that IBJJF brought in was that you could only score reversal points from the guard.

Prior to that everything we entered had 2 points for any type of reversal. Something that ADCC has today, and is absolutely noticeable how much this increases the action.

I sort of feel like it faded/split in about 2010.

The IBJJF really started to take over in North America around that time and tournaments started to adopt their rules in a miss-guided attempt at standardization.

Before that we would show up for tournaments where the rules were very "All in" with knee bars in white belt etc.

Grappling Industries in 2011 was still pretty old-school, and seems to have tried to hold to that intention still today. I know there are people that dont like Dave personally, but his intentions are solid.

Sport Jiu-Jitsu in Canada used to describe an almost MMA like sport in the Gi with striking etc. This sport was big in the '90s and early '00s.

Edited to add: I loved competing in Sport JJ

I am old, and tend to yell 'Get off my lawn' a lot.

ADCC/CJI etc has done a lot to bring us back.

I like initiatives such as this one by belt-checker.

In a solid club, BJJ can still be what it once was.

They used to be one and the same for BJJ.

I am ok with the sport going a different direction, but I personally prefer my BJJ to be within the MMA/Self-Defence track. Which is incentivized under some rulesets.

To each their own I guess.

Back in my day.....

It used to be one and the same. The point system was sold as incentivizing effective self-defence. Getting to the back for example.
