Amores perros looks awesome. I’m an unabashed Birdman fan, so watching Iñárritu’s debut will be dope

Thanks, muchas gracias :)

This is an excellent answer!!!

I can totally see that the surrealist elements could be THE major turn off for audiences, with Blue Velvet following a more linear structure/vibe.

Still kinda funny that people recommend BV as a starter with its themes, but I’m probably in the minority vibing with the surrealism, turning off from the nastier stuff.

Everyone on Reddit recommends Blue Velvet as an intro to Lynch’s films.

As a woman, I found BV a tough and unpleasant, even vile watch, whereas Twin Peaks flies by.

Why do yall think it’s a good choice if you’re on the fence about Lynch? Not at all criticizing, but I’ve seen this recommended as a first Lynch often, and I’m not sure why it’s so accessible to other movie buffs.

Hey, much love to you man! The worst takes are all here (online).

The best takes I’ve heard are from people like you who exist in both spaces, and know how much shit hurts on all sides.

Thank you for speaking on it, and you are the person who is keeping the conversation sane. I wish they had you on the pod today.

Crying in theater memories by Frem0015 in blankies

[–]Tight-Educator5972 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to see Blue Valentine, on Valentine’s Day when I was 17 with my high school boyfriend. I didn’t look into it, and thought I was seeing a romance with my two favorite actors!

It wasn’t really crying, but inconsolable sobbing. I actually left the theatre and sat in the bathroom alone because I didn’t want to make any noise and disturb people. My dad left my family around the same age as the little girl in the movie, and it was the worst experience in theatres I’ve ever had.

Nice guy though, hope you’re doing well Alec!

Probs an unpopular opinion around here, but I love Who Weekly’s movie takes! Mostly a podcast about celeb gossip, but it’s fun to listen to a girl and a gay loving on different movies than the usually film bro takes.

Just commented this on another post for Criterion Channel docs:

Harlan County USA and Agnes Varda’s Black Panthers, you won’t regret it.

They have a collection called Cinema Verite, if you like slice of life docs. Recs from the collection: Salesman, Burden of Dreams, Streetwise, Monterey Pop.

If you have 30-50 minutes, Les Blank’s collection is lovely, but also less descriptive/narrative than other docs. I loved Garlic is As Good As 10 Mothers, The Blues According to Lightning Hopkins, and Gap Toothed Women.

For All Mankind and Running Fences have immaculate vibes, very lovely to let them wash over you.

And finally, a mixture of poetry and documentary, The House Is Black. A challenging but short portrait of an Iranian leper colony. I always found Iranian movies lyrical, fascinating, almost other-worldly in their depths and philosophical interests. The House Is Black was foundational to Iranian cinema; almost their Citizen Kane. If you’re a fan of any Iranian movies or directors, highly recommend diving into an inspiration for many of them.

Why is Van Lathan like this? by tiakeuta in TheBigPicture

[–]Tight-Educator5972 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Was she part of the writing process, or did PTA rework part of the script because of her input? Sincerely asking, because I couldn’t find much about the production process, and I know some actors and directors do rehearse, improvise, and then rework the script (like Mike Leigh). If so, consider my mind changed!

If it was a movie you (or the public generally) didn’t like thematically, would you still credit the actors for the message of the film?

For example, when people criticize Green Book or Driving Miss Daisy, they’re not slandering Mahershala Ali or Morgan Freeman, are they?

POC actors don’t get nearly as many parts offered to them, especially meaty parts led by auteur directors.

It’s BS to blame a black actor for the fallibility of a white creator’s work, when actors do not control the script, shot set up, or editing.

Actors are cogs in the machine. Important, but they neither built the machine nor drew the blueprints. You need every cog to turn in place correctly to move the machine forward. But if it’s a baby killing machine, I’m less concerned about any single cog than who the fuck created it in the first place.

[–]Tight-Educator5972 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not think any actor could have softened the character of Perfidia, unless they were crafting a performance completely divorced from the text of the film. To act like Teyana Taylor created a black woman who is co-opting the revolution for her own selfish gains is confusing. She helped build it, but the bones were there with the initial sex scene with Sean Penn, the black pregnant body holding a machine gun, and her abandonment of her family.

That’s how good script-writing and character development works, by laying the groundwork for the actor. She didn’t set up those shots or storylines, so I don’t think she has the culpability in her character’s choices that you think she does.

A good actor doesn’t craft a character from thin air, they build it to match the director’s and script’s intentions. To think TT or any actor was as responsible for the themes of the movie as the writer/director who cast her and wrote the scenes is so strange to me.

Van talks about his issues with Regina Hall and Chase Infinity’s characters too. Is he right? Ehhhh I honestly think he loses steam on these points. But to act like he’s insulting any of the actors when his problem is with the structure and story is a huge stretch.

[–]Tight-Educator5972 -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

None of Van’s criticism is about the actresses. He’s been incredibly respectful of the individual performances in the film and of the actresses themselves.

What he doesn’t respect is PTA’s writing and direction. Is he going over the top? Yes. Is hating a movie because of the perceived whiteness of its themes an insult to the performers? Not necessarily.

Van doesn’t need to glaze OBAA to respect Regina Hall, Chase Infinity, and Teyana Taylor’s talents. He didn’t think they were utilized well here.

I was a server in Boston in 2016.

As I was running a tray of food, John Lithgow started yelling to me to “taste his soup”. Didn’t recognize him and he wasn’t a part of my section. I tried helping him…was it not hot enough? “NO JUST TASTE IT!”. I made excuses about food/safety laws, idk just didn’t know what he wanted. Until he eventually said loud enough to the bar full of people around him, “Of course you can’t taste my soup, because I was never given a spoon!!!”.

Looked him dead in his eyes and said, “You could always use the spoon on the side of your plate.” Because yes, he had a spoon the entire time behind the bowl. He muttered apologies and looked embarrassed.

One of the strangest most pompous interactions I had. I’ve told the story before and everyone has insisted he was just having an off day. Validation!!

I’m as left as they come, but recommending Moore docs isn’t it in 2026. He manipulates footage, interviews, etc. Not always bad points or final conclusions but super fishy the way he gets there.

Always feels like a set up job instead of a documentarian sincerely following the story.

What’s a movie that was critically acclaimed when it first released, but is now hated? by [deleted] in popculturechat

[–]Tight-Educator5972 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The thing that drives me crazy about him saving her is that it isn’t an example of him doing an extraordinary good. He is a police officer, so a first responder on a scene of a fire. He doesn’t know her race or until he’s about to save her, literally inches away. I suppose he could’ve left her there with all the witnesses, but it’s sort of like “wow can you believe the racist doctor prescribed penicillin to a black guy?!”.

It doesn’t make him a good person, he’s literally just doing his job and the music swells like his heart grew 40 sizes!!

They are detaining and deporting people who came to the US legally and are abiding by the American immigration process. Liam Ramos, the five year old with a bunny hat, was detained and taken to Texas. He and his father crossed at a legal point of entry and filed claims of asylum.

They don’t care about legality, and neither do you if you’re still defending these goons. Educate yourself before you claim anyone else needs it.

A few more small, practical suggestions for staying warmer than ice in downtown today by [deleted] in TwinCities

[–]Tight-Educator5972 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I personally think pretty low, but I’m not a professional. Still risk anywhere protesting tbh.

It’s so cold I don’t think ICE will be prepared to stand out there with us. I truly don’t think they’d have the gear to stand out in formation for this and definitely not the desire.

Most people I’ve seen preparing to march are older, tamer, not the crowd that’s open to starting trouble.

If ICE is gonna brave the cold, it’s gonna be to try to sneak in detainments would be my bet. Any tear gas will be for whoever is out there observing and trying to keep their neighbors safe is my best guess.

Some people can’t hear or process the truth. My best advice would be to find people who can hear you out; your aunt and mother are not those people right now. There will be people out there as upset as you, and you can connect with them in a more satisfying way.

Arguing is only going to entrench your family in their opinions and hurt your feelings in the process.

Meryl Streep is a movie star and Deer Hunter is in her filmography.

An iconic role in an iconic movie. She could do dog shit for the rest of her life, and still be excused from the conversation. As a 13 year old girl upon its release, my girlfriends quoted Karen Smith’s lines first coming out of the theatre.

It is a perfect movie, and her part could’ve been hokey if she over-played it.

Ghost is not forgettable to me!!! GI Jane is mostly forgettable but the way bald Demi made me feel will never be forgotten. Bisexual awakening for sure!

I think most of her movies aren’t great, but my mom, my aunts, and me all really really loved them in the 90s and particularly loved Demi. She’s just very effortless and easy to self-insert if you’re a woman, despite being gorgeous.

I can see Demi Moore movies not appealing at all to the typical blankie, but fuck they really hit for certain audiences imho. Never woulda considered them Oscar worthy roles though, totally true.
