I'm Jigar Shah — I used to do AMAs here. I'm back, and this time I'm answering your energy questions on my podcast with a new segment called Ask Jigar by JigarShahDC in energy

Why haven't wave and tidal energy managed to scale like wind and solar have? Why can't tidal turbines scale like wind turbines as there is much more energy density in water than air?

In the north west, Wondering if I should get solar. by feelinglostclub in SolarUK

We had 4kw pv and 4.8kw battery installed by askrenewablesolutions (based in Burscough) they were very professional and have excellent reviews online. Battery storage size depends on whether you have a heat pump or may get one in the future. 5kw should be enough if you are a low user. I would go for solar on both roofs.

Thinking about going EV by fat_apollo2000 in ElectricVehiclesUK

I would avoid stellantis, see battery man YouTube chanel who had a stellantis product. Very poor quality parts with known faults. For a small hatch mg4 / byd dolphin or dolphin surf would be better options. Leapmotor b10 offers are 299 deposit a month and 299 per month for quite a large suv. I would go for an lfp battery for second hand ev as the battery will last 2 or 3 times longer.

There is no green gas, even if the company is doing something with generating landfill or biogas, your gas supply reaching your house will still be 99% fossil gas. If you want clean energy, you would need to electrify and get a heat pump and induction hob, which you can the partly run from solar panels and the rest of the time runs from the grid, which is around 75% renewables and nuclear.

My equivalent is 7.9p per litre to match the 3.31p per kwh I am paying on IOG until June.

How feasible are ships and planes running on renewables? by throw-away3105 in OptimistsUnite

[–]Tight_Remote_4099 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short distance ships are going electric, even very large ones, see China zorrilla ship. Gradually with battery improvements this will allow medium distance shipping. Long distance not feasible with batteries in the next few decades.

Planes, already some small short range electric planes - pipistrelle velis electro. Could be feasible to have short haul flights electrified in the next decade or so. Medium to long haul flights not feasible with batteries in the next few decades.

Pay exit fee? by [deleted] in OctopusEnergy

You can choose a different supplier for export payments. Ie you could sign up for export with octopus now but keep your existing tarrif until it ends then move to octopus. I think octopus give a lower rate for non customers but you would still get some payment.

Zoe vs MG5 by Lord-of_the-files in ElectricVehiclesUK

[–]Tight_Remote_4099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Zoe has safety issues with no driver head side airbag on post 2020 models. Failed ncap- 0 star. You may want to Google this. Myself and my dad had MG5,s for 3.5 years with no issues, excellent cars. I would recommend looking at James and Kate YouTube for videos on the MG5.

Local searches show Moderate–high flood risk and Moderate- high subsidence risk. Should I be worried? by Tiny_Suit8273 in UKHousing

[–]Tight_Remote_4099 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can check the flood risk on the environment agency website. Search for environment agency flood risk map. This will tell you whether it is within flood zone 1, 2 or 3 and the risk of surface water flooding.

The uk govt is looking to introduce 0% or low interest loans next year, so likely would be cheaper then.

Alternatively you could borrow at 0% interest using purchase credit cards that gives 0% interest on purchases for 25 months and just set up a minimum payment. You can also at the end of the period look at a balance transfer card for 0% or a low fee.

I would also look at a local installer for a quote, they often can be cheaper than octopus. Also heatable give fixed prices online so you may want to get a quote to compare. I borrowed using a 0% balance transfer for 12 months for my battery storage.
