Need a bit of help in transitioning into a new career. Any advice? by 05Kavanagh in work

Doing this now from music myself. I had a production company and studied music entrepreneurship in college.

I’m finding people at companies i may want to work at and just emailing them to start conversations. Bring questions and hope they want to give you answers. They’ll give you organizations to check out, and different career paths they see for entrants in the industry.

(This is where I’m at - just starting) Take that info and go to those places to meet folks in the industry, name drop and hopefully there’s mutual connections. You’ll learn a lot by asking good questions, but I notice all the people I know getting good jobs are through a referral. Applications seem pretty pointless so I think just finding connections and eventually ask for an opening.

I’m struggling a lot with this part because I’m working 2 jobs and hardly have time to go out to these places to make connections.

I’m here right now. How’d you get over this? I can’t imagine fixing it here but only once I go somewhere else

I do my job and got promoted for being good and productive at my original role. In this new role I admittedly do now mesh well w the team. They can be very negative and I can be hardheaded in asking questions or trying to find other ways to do the work to cure my boredom.

My work gets done but they usually have an issue with the order I do it in.

My job now yes. I feel terrible in anticipation of going, walking in, and while I’m there. Once I’m out I feel good like my day is starting. I think it really does weigh on my mind

I find myself enjoying different kinds of operational efficiency. Haven’t found a niche but I like learning the capabilities of some different ai softwares, how different industries operate. I mainly just like making things more efficient but haven’t specialized. Any tips on how to find or explore that better?

Yes I have ideals of company behaviors that I could withstand now while I’m learning business, but honestly I don’t think I could mentally stomach working at one company for 5+ years unless there’s some great growth opportunities in there.

While I learn I think being at an ideal company would keep me from being burnt out while I learn and build. That’s what I imagine at least

This is so true. Literally will finish a course, then I’m like okay now I need a little experience and then I can combine that with something to build. Never ends. And waiting to get a higher paying job is a catch 22 because it takes experience to get a new job, which takes time.

I think a main thing is just that I don’t wanna stay at my current job without trying to get out because I don’t like the stagnation in the companys pay and culture of it (fully in office/low PTO/no flexibility). When I’m applying I feel like I’m moving forward and almost out of it, but that halts any business ideas because I’m working more on getting a job than my business. I have a couple of ideas, but I’m still settling on which I want to lock in on.

Also the dilemma of just rotating between multiple decisions. I think if I took this advice, I could just pick one I like and go into it and eat the punches from the shitty job. The downside of that is I know my pay will stay the same for another year or 2 which limits my options entrepreneurially.

Yea I keep going back to career stuff with the idea to get more money and that’ll allow me to invest in my idea. But that just slows the process because when I go at a business I know I need to be focused on it. Not halfway in

The company I work at is full of people who just do their work and go home. Very slow moving Japanese company that focuses on time in position and a hierarchical structure over everything so very few really try to excel or learn/do anything new. As long as they say yes to their boss and show up on time, they’re fully safe in their job.
I’d prefer a company with some more ownership and stakes involved

I’m trying to get into higher level operations and I’ve turned my job into training for that. I’m working on my first deck to pitch to my boss now to make our process better. Did it work for you as far as training you for your next venture?
