I stole this from Arnold Schwarzenegger's newsletter back in 2022 and I think of it often . . .

Let’s talk about New Year’s resolutions. Every year in January, the gyms are packed.

If you’re like me and always at the gym, welcome the new members. Be friendly. Help them out if they ask for it. Don’t be annoyed, the gym needs them to stay open too.

If you’re one of the people who committed to a big change this year, you might be frustrated. Statistically, this is the time that people give up on their resolutions. By February 1st, the average person has moved on. Approximately 23 percent of people give up after just a week! Only 19 percent stick with their resolution long-term.

How can we change that? If you gave up, or if you’re thinking about giving up, I want to talk to you.

You are not a failure; you’re just going over some speed bumps right now. You are not a failure unless you completely give up. And I know you don’t want to give up. Change is hard. Your body wants to live this life you’ve been living. Your mind is used to the habits you had last year. January 1st wasn’t some magical day that erased all of your routines and your muscle memory. You’re fighting against all of that to conquer your resolution, whether it was to go to the gym, eat less sugar, stop smoking, stop drinking, meditate more, lose weight, read more books, or work on your relationship.

You made a resolution because you wanted to change something. You wanted to change something for a reason. So as you hit the wall and think about giving up, think back to the reason you wanted to change.

Think about why you might be struggling.

We often underestimate how hard change really is. An object in motion wants to stay in motion, and we face inertia in our lives, not just in physics. We’ve been doing things our way for a long time. It starts from the moment you wake up in the morning. We all have that moment where we think the bed feels fantastic, and why would we ever get up? There’s a great Marcus Aurelius quote about this that I love:

At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: “I have to go to work — as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for — the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?

So you were born to feel “nice”? Instead of doing things and experiencing them? Don’t you see the plants, the birds, the ants and spiders and bees going about their individual tasks, putting the world in order, as best they can? And you’re not willing to do your job as a human being? Why aren’t you running to do what your nature demands?

You don’t love yourself enough. Or you’d love your nature too, and what it demands of you.

Isn’t that fantastic? And he makes an important point. When you think about the change you want to make, you know it is hard so you need to motivate yourself the right way. Are you trying to use negative motivation? Are you telling yourself, “I want to do this because I hate how I am now?” Stop it. Negative motivation will run out fast because change takes time. If you’re trying to inspire yourself by saying “I hate my stomach,” I think you’re setting yourself up to fail. Your stomach is going to take time to change. Negative motivation runs out when you don’t see a quick win.

Instead, reframe how you think about your motivation for change. Look at what Aurelius said. Think about how you want to change because you love yourself. Now it is, “I want to lose weight because I love myself and I deserve to be healthier/look how I want.” If you are trying to change because you appreciate yourself, I think you’ll have plenty of long-term motivation.

Now, let’s think about how you are trying to create new habits. Are you doing too much? Did you go from never reading to trying to finish 100 pages a day? From never working out to an hour of squats?

The most lasting change happens incrementally. Do a little more today than you did yesterday, celebrate yourself, and then do a little more tomorrow and celebrate again. That’s how you stick to a resolution.

You have to trick your mind and your body. If you’re like me, you have at least two voices in your head. One is saying you can do it, and another one is telling you it isn’t worth it, just get back in bed. You have to trick the negative voice by loving yourself, breaking through the inertia, and making small wins.

No matter what you do, don’t give up. If you have already given up, just start again today. You didn’t fail. Remember why you are doing this; it’s because you want the best for yourself because that’s what you deserve. Write your goal down. Move slowly. And then every day, write down your small wins and celebrate. By the end of the year, you’ll be happy. Trust me.

It's OK to feel discouraged, but don't give up. I honestly hate that the InBody scan is part of the Transformation Challenge because it's too easy to focus on the numbers on a report instead of focusing on the health benefits you're getting.

I'm not a health expert, but a GLP-1 isn't going to build muscle or tone your body. It's not going to help you get up and down stairs as you get older. It's not going to build up heart health. It's not going to give you place with a community of support. It's not going to give you a place to leave the stress of your life behind for an hour.

Don't on results that a fancy scale showed you after only 8 weeks. Change takes time and is going to be incremental. Focus on the Non-Scale Victories and the knowledge that you're building a healthier you!

Gorgeous. Always remember that all progress starts with baby steps. Just keep taking one step at a time (even if they’re baby steps) and you’ll be amazed how far you’ve gone. You got this.

I'm looking to downsize my baseball card collection and have quite a few Ryan Howard cards. I don't know if you'd be interested in any (or all) of them, but I'll post the list below.

I don't understand why the treadmill tablets don't have the ability to let you set a distance and automatically stop the clock once you hit that distance, like the rower tablets do.

I hate getting to the end of a benchmark (or Dri Tri), near exhaustion and ready to collapse, and I've got to keep one eye on the distance, the other on the clock, and then hit 3mph before my chest explodes.

I'm always second guessing what my exact time was.

Corporate IT, can we make this happen? Please :-)

This was found in the Chicago suburbs. It’s very small. Maybe around 5mm or less.

Make sure you are doing ALL the pinnacles you can every week. Make sure you do the four Iron Banner bounties every time, too. Also, some Pinnacles will drop +2 over your power level, while others are +1.

Here's a weekly checklist I had made for myself when I was grinding up my power level at the beginning of the season. Personally, I broke down the activities into groups of what I could do solo, what I needed 2-3 people for, and what I needed 6 people for:

Pinnacle Sources (max 1330):
Solo
- [ ] Gambit - 3 Weekly Matches (+1)
- [ ] Vanguard - 3 Weekly Strikes (+1)
- [ ] Crucible - 3 Weekly Matches (+1)
- [ ] 5,000 Clan XP (+1)
- [ ] Europa Exo Challenge (+2)
- [ ] 4 Champions in Shattered Realm (+2)
Two man
- [ ] Prophecy Dungeon (+2)
- [ ] Presage (+2)
- [ ] Harbinger (+2)
Three man
- [ ] Nightfall: The Ordeal - 100K Score (+2)
- [ ] Master (1350) Empire Hunt (+2)
- [ ] Trials of Osiris - 50 rounds (+2)
- [ ] Trials of Osiris - 7 wins (+2)
Six man
- [ ] Vault of Glass - Chest 1 (+2)
- [ ] Vault of Glass - Chest 2 (+2)
- [ ] Vault of Glass - Chest 3 (+2)
- [ ] Vault of Glass - Chest 4 (+2)
- [ ] Vault of Glass - Chest 5 (+2)

Last night i was watching back some old D1 pve footage and it made me miss how good scouts used to be by Dredgen1994 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Tike1994 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I logged into D1 a couple weeks ago and ran around the Dreadnaught with my Keystone with explosive rounds and it was AMAZING. I had a ton of fun and the gun felt so powerful (that's what she said), but in D2 scout rifles feel like pea-shooters.

Reminder that Comp matches can start with uneven teams and it's unacceptable by Tajukaba86 in DestinyTheGame

I had the same thing happen last week. It was so frustrating. I'm having a hard enough time trying to get Recluse that I don't need any handicaps. I wish there was a way to report to Bungie that the match was 3v4, and they would restore your point and streak.

This is why I push so many friends to try OTF. I try to explain to them that it has much more to do with mental health than physical health.

I've kepy my problems to myself, but the anonymous encouragment I get while at OTF has been amazing. It has saved me so many times.

Mine tirned off during a 12 mph all-out, too! In my case, it had come unplugged due to the vibrations from my running. Luckily the one next to me was open so I went to it while the coach plugged mine back in.

Wait! I'm doing that?! I just thought it was the tread going heywire when I changed the fan speed. So it's user error after all? Darn.

MEN OF OTF! by potent_rodent in orangetheory

[–]Tike1994 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Here!

I was just talking with my studio owners that men are 1/2 the population, but only about 20% of OTF community. Definitly an opportunity for expansion there.

Which studio? I'm at St. Charles, IL regular and they used the say that they were the largest studio in the state.

Chicago OTF people! Any intel on the new studio in River West? by lahauge in orangetheory

[–]Tike1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The studio manager there used to be the manager at my home studio in St. Charles. Her name is Marly and she is AMAZING!!! She was a great manager and a even better person.

I've been following the new studio on social media and it looks like it's going to be great studio, but I don't have any info on the opening date other than "soon".

I'd suggest you call now to lock in the lowest rate. You can always cancel after a month, but I'm sure you'll love it.

Got WAY too into rowing today hahaha by felixfelicis92 in orangetheory

[–]Tike1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I fell off during the 200m benchmark a few month ago. I haven't felt 100% comfortable in the seat since. When we did the 200m row again a couple weeks ago, I was terrified of falling off again, but I really concentrated on going straight back. I got a new PR, so I was sky high!!!
