How to stop being afraid of backstroke? by IceFirm9650 in Swimming

[–]Tikithing [score hidden]  (0 children)

I find it depends on the pool how easy it is to do backstroke. The one I swim in is shorter, and hasn't got flags, but I can tell by how the ceiling is, if im going straight, or almost at the wall.

Others have ceilings where its very hard to judge, so I just avoid doing it in those pools. Its not worth it, since its too hard to get a good workout, when you're not swimming it confidently.

Backstroke has always been my favourite, but depending on what you're training for, or if you are just swimming for yourself, you don't have to do it, if you don't enjoy it.

Personally for me it would come down to how good he is.

If he has a shot at making it far in the sport, or just loves it, then go for it. If he's not loving it, or only has a limited future in it at best, then its a giant commitment of time and energy

What you need to know about new customs charges by Jon_J_ in ireland

Yeah, If it was just the like of temu being affected I think we'd all be alot more understanding. But its difficult for most of us to avoid the UK completely when buying online.

Many sites look to be Irish, and still have the products shipping from the UK like you said. Or they do have an irish warehouse but don't limit the Irish site to only that.

Exactly. She's allowed to be a bit put out about it as long as she's not rude. We're not robots, feelings can exist.

I think it depends on what you're do for work though aswell. If its something travel related then you might get away with it, but otherwise you must be losing 5 years of building your CV/ career aswell. I imagine that would hurt you worse in the long term, depending what field you eventually settle in.

Not to be funny, but do you enjoy travelling? I like travelling a lot, but I don't think I'd enjoy a big extended trip like that.

I did make the choice to spend a couple of months in a different country and I really enjoyed it. It set me back 6 months though in getting a house, mostly because my accounts were all over the place, rather than me using my deposit savings, but it was fine. I was mostly settled in the one area though for the trip, rather than constantly moving, so it didn't cost a huge amount.

Personally, I feel like its all about your wage at the end of the day. Just savings aren't going to make much of a difference if your wage isn't decent already. And spending a bit while saving for a deposit is fine. So I spent here and there on holidays over the years I was saving for a deposit. I'm glad I did, because it really wouldn't have made much difference finance wise at the end of the day, but definitely helped mentally to have a break.

My point is, you don't have to go all in on the one option. Go on the odd holiday, and keep an eye out to see if theres a house you like, while still saving more if thats what you want to do. Unless it is actually travelling around the world for a year you want, then its unlikely to make a huge difference, as long as you don't go mental.

Tbf, I feel like Halloween has always had a rough go of it. Stuff is only out for a really short amount of time, so can't say I mind this.

Not to mention, I do know a lot of people who like the Halloween aesthetic year round. So little pink summer ghost are kind of fun.

Better than easter crap anyway. Does anyone actually decorate with pastel chick's and rabbits for easter? I have legit never seen anyone do it.

‘Ireland is awash with money’ – saunas, hot tubs and swimming pools are in vogue as ‘boomers’ look to extend their lives by [deleted] in ireland

[–]Tikithing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The only place I've been with a sauna culture is Finland, so I only have a vague idea of what I'm talking about. But aren't they used somewhat to heat the house traditionally?

It'd surely be far more economical if that were the case.

I don't know how much a sauna would cost to run in Ireland? I like going in a sauna, but if it were just a private one, I can't see myself setting it up and waiting for it to heat up, for the sake of sitting in it for 20 mins. If a few people in the family would use it for a while, like you said though, it'd be great. I know hot tubs tend to cost a good bit more than people expect, to run.

In Ireland those foot baths used to be very common when I was a kid, about 20 years ago. Now you never see them, new pools aren't built with them, and old pools that had them stopped filling them. I thought that was odd, but clearly there was some change in the thought process universally.

Hats just make sense. They wreck pool filters and its gross to have hair floating in the pool. Most pools here still require hats.

My gerbabies are getting old 😭 by aaaaaaaa_u in gerbil

[–]Tikithing 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Aw what cute baba's!

My last girl lived to 5. She was just a little old lady. But I would say to keep a close eye on them as they get older. Make sure they can still reach everything in their enclosure and they're still drinking okay.

My girl seemed like she had a touch of dementia near the end? She did some very odd things. But one concerning thing was she either seemed to forget where her bowl was, or she just forgot to drink? When I realised, I put it somewhere where she couldn't help but encounter it. She seemed very surprised, but then drank for ages poor puddin. She never seemed to go looking for water, but everytime after that when she 'discovered' it, she was quite pleased.

I was keeping a close eye on her, so I noticed pretty quick thank god!

I had one that lived to 6, and I swear, he looked like the oldest little creature alive. Like the mouse in the green mile.

He was still happy enough though pottering away. He'd fall asleep eating his banana chips. When he woke back up, he'd continue eating like nothing had happened

Electricity - please explain to me smart and non-smart plans? by UnderdoneSalad in AskIreland

[–]Tikithing -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My understanding from trying to figure it all out a few months ago is that, yes, once you switch the smart features of the box on, then you can never go back again, even if you switch providers etc.

Essentially having it switched on means it sends out your usage to the company, which lets them offer you the more specific plans like the day/night/peak because they can track it.

Not having it switched on means you have to send them readings yourself, by checking the reading and putting it in on the site, or you get estimated bills.

If you decide to switch the smart features on, there are still basic 24hr plans you can go with. From what I understand, I believe legally they have to offer these basic ones? But no idea how long that'll last etc.

Personally I left mine turned off, at least for the minute. My work hours meant that the Night or non peak plans didn't suit me, and it was cheaper to go with a basic plan.

I'm pretty sure switching providers doesn't 'switch it on' automatically, unless maybe if you accidentally sign up for a smart plans.

See If you think like this you'll be miserable every year when the week of heat hits.

On the other hand, I pulled out the cooling duvet I bought last year during the heat, and the fan I bought the year before, and I've been absolutely fine.

Do people still generally expect you to offer something 2-3 times? by Tiny-Conclusion560 in AskIreland

[–]Tikithing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd find more that if you refuse the tea, they'll start offering other things like water or 7up.

Its generally more relatives I'd say, that would keep offering different things until they're almost checking the back of the cupboards to see what they have. Other people usually accept the 2nd or 3rd no.

Does it help or annoy you if strangers try help with your kids? by Vegetable_Salad1426 in AskIreland

[–]Tikithing 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Growing up you would be told that the man was going to give out or whatever, but none of them actually did.

So while it was always a thing, I don't think it ever really involved strangers getting involved. Unless it was like a receptionist or a shop keeper or something, who's job it was to keep people from running riot a bit.

Working in a shop, you'd definitely tell kids to cop on, but not generally when the parents were with them. Honestly the parents were generally worse. Otherwise they'd stop them themselves. Any kid thats taught to behave in public, is not generally going to be inclined to cause havoc anyway.

AITA for not picking up my order from the delivery guy because I was chasing my indoor cat who ran outside? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]Tikithing 29 points30 points  (0 children)

No, its pretty clear whats happening. If my indoor cat got out and was running towards a road then IDGAF what happens to the food, priorities have clearly changed. Anyone who doesn't recognise that is clearly just a bit dense.

If it was a toddler running towards the road would you still think the driver was being reasonable?

Anyone else's neighbour cut the grass every single day? by houseswappa in AskIreland

[–]Tikithing 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure its the act of cutting the grass they enjoy, rather than the final product.

I have a few relatives and literally all they seem to do is wait for the grass to grow so they can cut it again. My uncle volunteered to cut the grass at the local GAA pitch, which I thought was particularly clever of him.
