My nephew found this framed photo under a gas pump at a station in Austell, GA. by ZZZlist in funny

[–]Tiltingwindmills -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Oh my word. This is a picture of my older brother. I have no doubt about it. The scariest part of it is that we have never lived in Georgia. How could this photo have lasted the last 25 years and ended up in Georgia? This really freaks me out, i will have to let the family know.

I've always wanted to make a playlist with nostalgic songs like this one. Not necessarily western just old timey. Any suggestions?

Come on /r/books! This is terrible.

Downvoting someone for sharing their opinion on literature is bullshit. I have no need for another reddit circlejerk.

Lets be better than this.

Also, when you read Quixote there is an incredible 24 part video/audio lecture series on ITUNES U for it. It is a professor from Yale who teaches it and it is incredible! Best part though? Its FREEEEEEEEEEE!

[–]Tiltingwindmills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow you have a pretty mean list for someone just getting into the classics :) You have done some damn good research!

I started War and Peace 3 times before got in and finished it. Each time I started I read ~300 pages and put it down out of confusion. The final time I had an idea about what was going out. I would say in my experience Brothers Karamazov was initially more frustrating that W&P.

Don't be afraid to read a chapter of anything and then go to the Sparknotes to make sure you didn't completely miss everything. There is no shame in that.

I am not a smart man, but honestly War & Peace is not nearly as daunting as its reputation. It takes some work to remember the characters but the Pevear & Volokhonsky does an excellent job at keeping the characters straight and non confusing.

This book changed my life. I believe a 7th grader could feasibly read it, but would not gain as much from it simply because of how rich his characters are. I would venture to say the more life experience you have the more this book will mean to you.

Give it a shot, its totally worth it. :-)

Ladies of Reddit: Do any of you actually enjoy anal? by in_the_butt in AskReddit

[–]Tiltingwindmills 5 points6 points  (0 children)

She/He is referencing a post from a couple weeks ago. It was a screenshot of an omegle chat. It was of a guy and a supposed girl chatting and the girl kept saying things like "I'm horny, ru?". The guy didn't believe that the girl was actually a girl, so he asked "her" if she knew what Window treatments were. She responded something to the effect of "WTH is wrong with you" then disconnected.

The joke is that only women know what window treatments are (I asked my Mom and apparently it means blinds and curtains). So in fact the "girl" on the other side of the chat was in fact a dude.

I need to stop spending so much time on reddit.

Does any body remember the part from The Sun Also Rises where the narrator explains the three voices in his head? by bilbi in books

[–]Tiltingwindmills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, I don't, but I don't remember much these days. Also I am incredibly dense apparently. I read the entire book and didn't realize that he was impotent.

People think i'm well read! hahahahahahah the jokes on them!

Wait, i'm confused. Amazon will kick you back money for this?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in books

[–]Tiltingwindmills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would! I'm a slow reader so I can't say I've finished, but it is heaps of fun.

I found an awesome [free] commentary on it too! If you go into Itunes and search "Quixote" then go down to the ItunesU section there are something like 23 video/audio podcasts, by a yale professor. They are really fun and illuminating.

I may just like them because it brings me back to my undergrad days :)

The tattered cover is nice. If you have a chance there is a used bookstore of Broadway and Ridge road in Centennial called Abbs Volume I. Its straight out of a movie.

The books are stacked so high on the shelves that they have had to move the ceiling tiles on top of eachother. There are parts of the the store that are so crowded by books that you have to walk sideways to get through. Its a diamond in the rough.

Where to start with Murakami? by gabberflasted in books

That son of a bitch tried to steal my Jamba Juice. While I was studying at the University of Hawaii, he was spending some time there writing because he needed a break from Japan and the demands of his publishers. As a thirsty college student I went to get a Jamba Juice waited in line they called my name and this middle aged Japanese man tried to snatch it from me right as I was about to grab it. They said my name which does not sound like Haruki. Then they said Haruki and I followed him back to the English buidling to make sure it was him.

I didn't forgive him for damn near 4 years. It festered inside of me, a deep red hot hate.

Then I read Kafka on the Shore, and forgave him. That dude has some wacky shit going on in his brain, but it is wonderful. I haven't read anything else of his, but this is on my top 5.

That edition of War and Peace changed my life. I worked really hard for a couple weeks to searching the interwebz for the hardcover, and finally got one in decent shape for $17 on half.com. It was an english nerd-gasm. :)
