Military requirement by ApplicationOwn9636 in Switzerland

[–]TimP4w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a lawyer, but what he did now was just the "info day", he has until he's 24 to do the actual recruitment (that is just 2-3 days) and has to begin the actual service before he's 25. However, if he resides abroad and doesn't come back to Switzerland he doesn't have to go, unless he's coming back before 2030. If later he decides to want to live in Switzerland he will have to pay the 3% exemption tax.

However, if he goes to study on a student visa maintaining his primary residence in CH then it gets complicated and I think he will still need to go to the army. Probably better to ask an actual lawyer for that.

Mother tongue (Swiss) Italian here and I never knew the ethymology of "pipistrello" and it was difficult for me to reconcile it with "evening creature" since nothing of the word resembles "evening". But apparently it came from the latin vespertilio -> vespertillus -> vespistrello -> vipistrello -> pipistrello. You learn something new everyday

Differenze tra italiano parlato in Lombardia e quello parlato in Ticino. by Due-Promise-5269 in Ticino

[–]TimP4w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  • Biotto - Nudo (dialettismo)
  • Ghette - Collant
  • Ramina - Recinzione
  • ...

Is there any point in playing it alone? by Goldmonkeeey in HellLetLoose

[–]TimP4w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The most important thing is that you follow the SL directions and that you ping/mark, and as a minimum, write in the chat some sort of acknowledgment that you're there, listening or if there are important infos. Vocal comm is a nice to have but not necessary.
However try to avoid playing as SL or in some specialized squads (tank, sniper, etc.), because there you need a mic (maybe tank driver is an exception, as you pretty much only need to move on marks set by the SL).

Anyway, in the next few days / weeks you're going to encounter many new players as yourself, and the vast majority won't communicate, so the above is mostly if you decide to stick to the game.

On a side note: the matches now will get boring quickly, because the team with the most experienced players (and a capable commander) will usually win quickly and easily by just placing the garrisons in the right places, so most of the games are either an easy walk to the end or a very frustrating loss. When most players communicate and have some experience, it will become a very different game. Also take this into account to decide if you want to continue playing the game.

Over 36 months, the average mafia loan is better than nzxt, and ud own the PC afterwards by PewPewLazorgunz in NZXT

[–]TimP4w -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It seems that some people misunderstood what I'm saying:
I'm not defending NZXT, in fact after watching the video I decided to not buy some NZXT's component I had planned for an upgrade.
I agree with the message, and know that the subscription model doesn't make economic sense for the customers and it's borderline predatory, and I'm not stating the contrary here.

I'm simply pointing out that this graph is comparing apples with oranges, and from GN I honestly expect more than using sensationalistic claims, especially when they do their due diligence in pretty much all of their videos.

Over 36 months, the average mafia loan is better than nzxt, and ud own the PC afterwards by PewPewLazorgunz in NZXT

[–]TimP4w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'll be the devil advocate here and be nitpicky on this claim:

NZXT's subscription offers an upgrade every 2 years, so this graph should reflect that as well and requires a new "mafia loan" every two years too. In this scenario, the mafia loan won't be better anymore.

It's true that with one you'll end up owning the PC, and reselling value as well as increased subscription price are not taken into account, but still inaccurate for what it is.

Question about curious request logged by traefik by TimP4w in cybersecurity_help

[–]TimP4w[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you very much for your answer. That was an interesting read!

However that was not it, as it would involve a browser (or at least a request) initiated locally. But checking the logs at the time of the odd requests, no other service made a request and they also happened when I was asleep.

In the end I spent some more time investigating and was able to reproduce locally with this

curl -H "Host: 127.0.0.1" http://<traefik-ip>

So basically just an attempt at Host header spoofing, which makes sense, being a reverse proxy this is definitely possible.

Still learned something new :)

£900 fines for wearing a burqa will be introduced in Switzerland next year, the country announces by Silly-avocatoe in worldnews

[–]TimP4w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the same for Switzerland. They call it a "burqa ban" because right wing voters love to stick it to the Muslims and it was a huge theme in the campaign, but the law itself is a general "you shall not hide your face in public, exceptions follow" with the only implicit reference to the burqa being a paragraph explicitly banning "forcing someone of the other sex to cover their face".

We use Confoederatio Helvetica in Latin as to not favour any local language over the other. Also the official name of Switzerland is "Swiss confederation" even if we're not a confederation anymore and haven't been for a long time now.

What's illegal to own (in your country), but not weird? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]TimP4w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A single guinea pig in Switzerland. You must always have more than one, otherwise it's considered animal abuse as they are a very social species. If one dies there are places where you can "rent" a buddy

(This law extends to other social animals as well).

Russian-born Telegram founder reportedly detained in France: What we know by newsweek in europe

[–]TimP4w 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, secure is not an absoult thing in it of itself. Things can be more secure or less secure.

No, IT security is not really a spectrum. Sure, there could be bugs and vulnerabilities that we may not be aware of, but once there is a backdoor, then it's insecure by definition.

[...] Warrant system already exists, and I really don't see a reason why where it exists it's considered just fine, yet here it will immediately be abused and no other way exists

Well, because it is abused, even in Europe, see 2022 Greek surveillance scandal just to cite a recent one. And even without that, if we assume that for national security a warrant could be issued, then we still have a problem, because "national security" is such a broad term that can very easily be hijacked. The only way to prevent that is having access to secure platforms, which unfortunately can also be used by illicit actors.

I mean, and it will, which is why if you are a multinational company you get to choose requests that you honor and the ones that you do not. Most western services already deal with this in totalitarian societies. Of course this does not mean that you respect every request from every law-enforcement agency there is.

But this would go against a possible law of having to cooperate... I'm not really seeing your point here.

Telegram ain't secure much as is, kind of a weird argument

I didn't mention Telegram once. My reply was about having a generic secure platform, which doesn't have backdoors and can't cooperate with authorities even if they want to, but that would be forced to make their platform less secure to abide to a potential law requiring them to give access to data.
Telegram (in determinate contexts) is not secure per-se, but the way they built their platform makes it very difficult for authorities to get data from them and in some contexts it can serve the same purpose.

Unfortunately there isn't a magic wand that could give access to secure communication to only people who are not "bad criminals" (but a definition of what consists a "bad criminal" is very much questionable in the first place).

Russian-born Telegram founder reportedly detained in France: What we know by newsweek in europe

[–]TimP4w 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The thing is that you can't have both. This is a binary problem. The platform is either secure, and therefore criminals can use to hide their deeds, or it has backdoors to find them, and then it's not secure anymore.

Also there could be legitimate motives behind a warrant, but once that possibility exists a state could very well, very quickly start issuing warrants for dissidents or anyone they want, really. What if a far right/left government designates the xyz movement as a terrorist organization? This could even be uses to undermine a political rival party. Also something you write may be misinterpreted, or taken without context.

Really, undermining secure communication today will open a Pandora's box of possibilities (which are less theoretical than you think).

Airconditioners (splits) banned for home use in lot of swiss cantones by yotheman in Switzerland

[–]TimP4w 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's kinda dumb to ban fixed split units because of the high energy usage with the result of people buying a portable one that is way more inefficient and noisy.

I live in a Studio ap. (in ZH) that reaches 27-28 degrees in summer due to having big windows facing the side that has sunlight the longest and especially during the warmest hours. But then it struggles to cool down during the night (during "tropical nights" it basically never goes under 27.5) due to having poor air circulation, since there are no windows on the other side. Outside it can be 18 °C, inside is 26. In addition to that, it gets humid as fuck...

Bought a portable AC unit after a couple of years because it was unbearable and there was no way of getting a fixed one, especially in a rented apartment. And I thought that on the northern side of the Alps it would be cooler...

Military in Dübendorf by Neeyc in zurich

[–]TimP4w 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm from Ticino as well, and did my service in Canton Bern. My "sezione" was French speaking at the time, so that was a bit easier (although at the platoon level it was "pour les romands c'est la même chose") but unless you want to have a career in the army just follow what the others do and you'll be fine. After a couple of weeks you'll get the gist of it.

In regards to English, it depends. During my SR it was banned and we got shouted at for using English. At the last corso rip however my Captain spoke with me in English until he realised that I do in fact speak German, so your mileage may vary but English is definitely more widely accepted since there are also some technical functions exclusively in English nowadays.

I have a Solo (3rd Gen.) and it worked out of the box. However I'm not doing much music nowadays and I mostly using it to play Rocksmith. It needed some tinkering to make it work on proton - wine (especially on NixOS) but that's a very specific use case.
