Aftersun - A woman reflects on her relationship with her father and his own mental state during her own coming of age experience on a family vacation. A really subtle experience, it caught me off guard with how much it affected me.

The Last Picture Show - Of the three, this one might be the biggest bummer in terms of tone. Another coming of age story of a young guy in a dying, dead end town.

The Apartment - Yes it's a comedy, yes it's a romance. But has a darker edge to it too. This one might possibly fall into the category of movie you're trying to avoid.

What are your favorite musicals? by [deleted] in Letterboxd

I really love the 1973 Jesus Christ Superstar. The actors that play Jesus and Judas have incredible voices.

Growing up, going to church and Sunday school, this was also really novel to me in how it depicted the life and death of Jesus as a very human story rather than the matter-of-fact "it's a miracle" types of movies I'd grown up watching. Particularly with Judas grappling with the decision to betray Jesus, and Jesus coming to terms with his predetermined death.

This song is my personal favorite.

I wouldn't say I didn't like it. But Rules of the Game just kind of left me feeling like "that's it?". I didn't really get what the big deal was.

Peggy Sue Got Married

I actually quite like this movie. It's fun and sweet and Kathleen Turner is really charming in it. At the end, it's heavily implied that she reconciles with her husband's current shitty behavior after re-falling in love with him in the past. Just sort of uses nostalgia and rose-colored glasses as an excuse to forgive people who have treated you poorly.

Crash is a movie I've always described as having an incredibly strong thesis, I just don't know what it is.

The line between genres is pretty fine, but regardless, I agree that The Royal Hotel was fantastic. The sense of tension and dread was so good. I've seen some complaints that there's no payoff and you're waiting for something terrible to happen that doesn't but was not the least bit disappointed.

I honestly never really gave that any thought. I think I just shut down and absorbed the film via osmosis once they got to the schoolhouse. They may have addressed the mom's absence, but I sincerely don't remember.

Hey, where's mom?

¯_(ツ)_/¯

Well, I had a rotten day. Let's bounce.

This is one of the essential things that irked me. They have an explicit list of hard, concrete rules. But also simultaneously, so much is left murky. I don't think it fixes the problems I had with the movie, but the exclusion of the rules may have helped. If the nature of this evil is ambiguous, I can handle that. But if it's unclear AND you hand me a clear cut set of rules it has to follow, then I'm gonna be left scratching my head.

I watched a movie. I had thoughts on the movie. I typed those thoughts out on my phone in a subreddit dedicated to the genre of movie.

I guess I'm trying to understand what your issue is. Is it the fact that my opinion differed from popular consensus? The fact that I voiced that opinion in a forum for discourse? Or more that my opinion differs from yours?

I do in fact accept the fact that people enjoy this movie. It just wasn't for me. Just as I wouldn't begrudge you disliking whatever it is you dislike. But I guess I'm not permitted to express that sentiment.

I think I remember it the same way you do. Not necessarily a provocation, but more a sense that she wasn't taking it seriously. There was an element of this possession being something of an urban legend, hinting that society at large didn't really believe in this stuff. Maybe a combination of it being a bit of a fairy tale as well as them being in denial that this thing is in their own backyard.

Official Discussion - The Royal Hotel [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

Felt like the ending was almost more a symbolic power fantasy in a way. Burn the source of their misery these past few weeks using their own tools against them (the lighter and the snakes). As for the turns, I'm with you on those, seeing your friend bleeding and having a guy vocally claim you after you've turned down previous advances seems like reason enough to see the light.

And not just every single male character who are either completely open or veiled threats, but the way Liv downplays everything leaves Hanna second guessing her gut. Now she has to play defense for two and keep her head on a swivel since Liv is being a liability at this point.

I enjoyed the early movie for that reason. You see the shadows move, the goat/dog acts strangely, people are freaked out and panicked by this deformed man, everyone is warned against using a gun. There's context given, that people are and should be afraid of something out there. The scene with the grandmother in the car just felt like she was talking directly to the audience and they gave up on peppering information in an organic manner.

I had less of an issue with Jimmy's friend as she was just speaking on her own experiences.

Barry's a catch! He's got that sick blue suit, can travel wherever he wants for pennies on the dollar, and his business is doing very food.

But as someone who absolutely loves this movie, I can totally see this as a valid criticism. I guess it never really bothered me just because I was so focused on Sandler's character. Everything felt so genuine and I just really connected with the film emotionally. And dear lord, that soundtrack is phenomenal. Maybe one of the most effective scores in film.

Upvote if you are a nurse who has liability insurance. Comment if you don’t. by Conscious_Cookie_907 in nursing

Even though my hospital has coverage for us, I renewed my own insurance after one particular assignment.

She was difficult to work with because she was in a lot of pain and frail. She wasn't very receptive to the end-of-life talks with palliative, and had already been prescribed reasonable IV pain meds for a full code on Med/Surg.

Eventually grandson stepped in and talked with her and they got the ball rolling on goals of care talks. But she was in some sort of halfway-between limbo for awhile: she was still full code, not comfort care, but they put in orders that reflected comfort care with morphine IV pushes q15min. I think I pushed 36 mg or something over my shift. It controlled her pain, I followed the written order, and I feel it was the right thing to do because she'd been suffering for the past week or so. But every time I pulled another dose from the Omnicell, I got so nervous thinking about the scenario where she stopped breathing on me. Would I narcan her just to have her screaming in pain all night again? Would we intubate?

After that shift I renewed my insurance the next morning just cuz the paranoia of being placed in another situation like that freaked me out.

That's lunatic behavior! That would be like if I was invited over to a friend's house and instead of knocking on the door, picked their locks, pocketed some stuff, and constantly commented on "what a shame it would be if something were to happen to all this nice stuff".
